People sometimes compare Russian Communism and Nazism.. But 1917 revolution was not more than a coup accomplished only by a little number of bolchevists, with no popular support, and triggered a civil war during which millions of USSR own people were killed. In Germany Hitler was elected and really had an enthousiastic support of around 80% of the people, which is totally amazing and unleashed a german economic and patriotic miracle. Even if it all ended in the disaster of WW2, naturally.
Also, the guy wasn't even a German, but an Austrian maybe...or maybe a half/Hungarian Jew. No one really knows as his background was very murky and covered up...sound familiar?
Anyone wanting some insight into this singularly sick and depraved man need only read "Hitler's Niece" by Ron Hansen. Knowing his perverted background then seeing his smirking, vain face in this film makes you realize how audacious and insane he truly was. But what about all those cheering smiling Germans? Sad, isn't it?
I don't have the patience to watch the whole thing (too strange). Can someone tell me if the film ever mentions Hitler's plan to exterminate the Jews in Germany?

As fascinating and educational as this historical film is...the real triumph of will is to be able to sit through this whole film. Long speeches, music marching, more speeches, more militant music...very tedious. Perhaps people of the 1930's had longer attention spans.

People sometimes compare Russian Communism and Nazism.. But 1917 revolution was not more than a coup accomplished only by a little number of bolchevists, with no popular support, and triggered a civil war during which millions of USSR own people were killed. In Germany Hitler was elected and really had an enthousiastic support of around 80% of the people, which is totally amazing and unleashed a german economic and patriotic miracle. Even if it all ended in the disaster of WW2, naturally.

He edited some of the diary because she had written some bad things about her mother and the marriage of her parents and also because some of the things she wrote contained sex references which he considered inappropriate.

As fascinating and educational as this historical film is...the real triumph of will is to be able to sit through this whole film. Long speeches, music marching, more speeches, more militant music...very tedious. Perhaps people of the 1930's had longer attention spans.

I understand that this movie had several working titles: "Germany Loses It's Marbles", "America - Don't Try This At Home", or "Never Trust A Guy With Skulls And Crossbones On His Hat".

@theGUYwho1 The cat is actually a symbol of Hitler's idea that women should stay domestic and remain in the household, caring for children and cooking dinner, cleaning, etc. It goes back to the idea of "women should be barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen," and Hitler encouraged them to have more children (but only of the blue-eyed, fair haired Aryan race, of course :/ ). It sounds twisted to us now, but that's how it was. The cat symbolizes that idea.

@MuchoFunkie actually, the nazi party won 37% of the vote in 1933 that elevated hitler to the chancellery. actually, a majority quite consistently supported hitler's policies, but not quite in the way one might think. it turns out that the most popular aspects of nazi ideology were those related to a return to conservative, victorian values. they also promised order and economic stability and soon delivered. but...they were also supportive of his anti-semitism. sorry, but it's true.

@brotherwoo You are precisely correct in your allotted 500 characters; the percentage of Germans who were Communists was not so dissimilar to those who were Nazis.
But your point is well taken; the Communists promised the chaos of a "new order" while the Nazis promised to BRING order to a traditional Germany and this is what the German people really, really wanted as you so succinctly and correctly pointed out.

@MuchoFunkie it is also a myth that the german army 'only was following orders.' feel free to read 'the path to genocide' by christopher, who thoroughly debunks the myth that german soldiers were merely following orders. lisa pine's 'hitler's national community' also speaks to the same truth. if you would rather watch a documentary with interviews of both participants and victims of the 'final solution,' please watch 'the nazis: a warning from history" and judge for yourself...

My grandfather was in the Wehrmacht, and he never knew anything about the genocide going on, heard from an actual person who was there. But I was not there, but I trust my grandfather more than I trust a book about furtherly debunking the German army. @brotherwoo It would be fairly easy to find books debunking the Allied army as well, which is not to any concern since the Americans dropped the nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki of which Japans emperor allready had announced the surrender to the Japanese population and written the acclamation of surrender. @MuchoFunkie Japan had not announced any "surrender" prior to the two nukes being used; this is asinine; after the first bomb was dropped the cabinet met and voted, UNANIMOUSLY to continue the war; after the 2nd bomb was dropped, the vote was a tie which the Emperor broke and even then, a coup had to be put down; it too wanted to continue the war.
In fact, the US was preparing "Operation Downfall" to invade the Japanese home islands in two stages; Oct. of '45 and March of 1946.

In modern society, we don't see ourself as monsters, but our enemies as monsters by the only reason that they are our enemies, how can we live in a society where we think that everything we do is absolutely right? Yes, there were also people that didn't like Roosevelt but at least they could say so openly and even openly join the opposition (Republican) party.

@SatchmoSings To your concern, The German newsreel at this time (Die Deutsche Wochenschau) was simply the indoctrination of propaganda itself... To furtherly notice it, it is a large group of people, but it is not 100 million people (as an approximate number of the German population at the time), it is all made to create stir. Have you ever tried being to a concert? Or perhaps a demonstration? It is pretty much the same thing, you get taken away.

@MuchoFunkie well, german actually had around 69.6 million citizens in 1939, but who's counting? but the reali point is thie: propaganda is only effective if it heightens fears, prejudice, hatred, etc. that is already prevalent. propaganda is the match to the fire. nazi propaganda wouldn't have worked had not the average german already been sympathetic to it. in fact, most went along with it because of careerism, greed, opportunism, etc...not because they were 'brainwashed.'

@brotherwoo Thats a pretty deluded comment. In 1939 the German population was of an aproximate of 80,600,000+ - and that grew pretty vastly throughout the war. If you say that there did not exist propaganda on the Allied counterparts, you are wrong too (even though you didn't directly state it), the Russian's used the same kind of propaganda - which is called socialist realism - And the US had propaganda aswell in large degrees.
