I love the fiddle & the flute--This song reminds me of the best summer of my life ,in Ocean City , Maryland 1975. What GREAT music & what great friends.
There's a line in this song that I live by as every man should so his heart won't get broke.
I DON'T YOU TO THINK YOU'RE THE FIRST ONE WHO LEFT ME OUT HERE ALONE AND IT AIN'T THE FIRST TIME THIS OLE COWBOY SPENT THE NIGHT ALONE.
That says it all to you girls who don't think we cowboys don't have a heart like you do. After the loving, we lay there thinking how lucky we were to make love to such a pretty little lass as you!
This was my music when I returned from two tours in Vietnam. Used to sit out late at night with a bottle of gin, a shotgun, and listen to Marshall Tucker until the sun came up. Miss those crazy days!
This band and their music hold a very special place in my heart for many reasons. They we're a favorite of my dad's, along beside ''The Ozark Mountain Daredevils'' , The Charlie Daniels Band, Jimmy Buffet, Jackson Brown, and you can imagine how cool he was, and, how cool it was to grow up under his care, and also at the same time all this magical music was being created and heard for the very first time. It gave this young man a love and respect for God and music that has lasted me a lifetime.TLEE
It's nice to read your words DillonsLittlePoof33 - I am happy to say MTB has been on my turn table/CD Player nearly my whole life as well. My oldest brother turned me on to them when I was 12. I saw MTB for the first time at the University of Maine in Orono and again at a bar in Bangor. I saw Toy twice on his own - I am very lucky. Thank you all for making this intertainment available on YouTube - I'm loving it all, having nothing to offer you all but my thanks. Dig it (as Tommy would say)
saw Marshall Tucker live twice in Springfield Mass in the late seventies, really special band, so sad when Toy died. He's one of the greatest guitar players ever, check his playing on "every day I've got the blues" off the double album, where we all belong. No words to describe his amazing talent. My favorite band of all time.
Thank you Hillbilly Jim for playing this song 11/19 on Outlaw Country. First time I heard it and I definitely have a new found appreciation for the Marshall tucker Band. Great tune!

I grew up in the Spartanburg area in the late 60's. They used to be called the Toy Factory and you could get in for $1 to see them perform. Classic country rock for the AGES
One of the Best Country Songs ever written and recorded, that makes its way onto the playback system on one of those long drives...to and from the place we know as home.

@gaeanreach I COULDN'T AGREE MORE! MTB IS NOT POP/COUNTRY. THIS IS PURE SOUTHERN ROCK AND ROLL. WHICH TO ME IS GOOD TIME ROCK AND ROLL, WITH A CLASSIC COUNTRY EDGE!
This song is one of the few temporary cures for heartache. It says that no matter how bad things may be at the moment, there's always a new day dawning. I love this song and what it stands for.
@ladybug32ok .......is it any wonder why there isnt any human decency in this country anymore. people are more into style & image than substance. what a shame
@pp63100 good call. american idol is just a glorified karoake contest. and what's lady gaga famous for? because she dresses like a maniac? where is substance and talent?
@luvkravmaga ......American Idol is the perfect example of how this country has no human decency anymore, especially when the English guy, Simon was DEGRADING & CRITICIZING the contestants. I cant understand the pleasure people get watching others being humilated by pompous assholes???? HELL'S KITCHEN is another great example.
@ladybug32ok .....you aced that....seen these guys in '73 and the music today will never compare to music like this, one of the greatest I've ever seen
I saw them for the first time in 1974 while I was in the Navy. I followed them all the way to when they stopped recording. I have all their albums and listen to them only occasionally because they are so old and don't want to put any more wear on them than I have to. The Marshall Tucker Band is probably the greatest band I will ever experience since they don't make 'em like this anymore. I am so glad to have lived when they were at the height of their career and actually heard them live.
When I think of MT I know they are from SC. It's just second nature. But then I think, well, a person can learn how great Southern Rock is. I love Skynyrd, but they are nearest the top of the pile...in many opinions
I first heard MTB in 2008 at the Ham and Yam Festival in Smithfield, NC...only found the title of this song a few months ago. This song made the evening seem warmer, the air seem sweeter and made my time in NC all the better. Now I'm back home in Canada, but this song takes me back to a wonderful three years I spent in the Tar Heel state. May it never be forgotten.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
FUCK all you POSs in the MOUTh. Your little Marshall FUCKWIPE Tucker band SUCKS NIGGER SHIT. I wouldnt wipe my ass with those inbred Rednecks. PerkerwoodSmith is a FAGGOTMOUTHED ASSWIPE
@flymarvin - WOW! I'm not sure what's more disturibing - the degree of hate, or general ignorance - for you Marvin, that's idiocy, stupidity, or, "dumb-assness" TPT like you should be censured - Freedom of Speech is frightening in the mouths of morons! Proud, Intelligent Southerner!
@theaxis2000 No kidding. No lifeguard at the gene pool with that boy. These internet trolls are pretty tough dudes when they know they're safe in Mommy's basement.
This IS my all time favorite song it has it all good lyrics it has rock, country, and who would've guessed a country rock band can do JAZZ and do it well ! and just think they did it in 1 take live in the studio then left it untouched or over dubbed or remixed how we here it is how they played it !!! I was lucky to see them 3 times with Toy (RIP) and was never let down they always sounded good !!! and if anyone says anything different I'd say they dont know a damn thing about good music !!!
One of thier best. Rivals Alman Bros is the Country Rock Jazz format. Toy Caldwell was amazing. Saw them in 77 at Englishtown, NJ with the Dead, NRPS and Pure Prarie League. What a show. TS
@sweetscience1 - Hey flymarvin been ritin to me - if ya want I'll send the shit he's been writing - He's (supposedly a studio musician and attended Penn state - Ten buck's if ya ask him to spell Bob and spotted him the two B's and the O he'd still fuck it up - and he likes getting his dick sucked by guys - I have proof - Marshall Tucker rocks - Flymarvin is a pickle puffing never was
@PeckerwoodSmith Ive heard his comments, and I agree he is a pickle puffer. He thinks getting a bj from a MAN doesnt make him gay,HES as gay as they get.I think he was actually looking for brokeback mountain when he ran across this great music and now hes trying to spread his gayness, sorry flylarva, this aint gonna be the first time this ole cowboy spent the night ALONE !!!
@PeckerwoodSmith - can you see this flymarvin struttin around his dirty apartment in shit stained underwear and eatin government cheese - nice pic too - he looks like Charlie Mansons' brother - the decent side of that family
Pure lyrical genius at work here. The last verse is pure poetry. I still remember the first time I heard it all those years ago and it still brings a smile to my face. Still miss the Caldwells.
One of my all time favorites of the MTB. Great Southern Band Used to see them with the Brothers in the Park in Hot'lanta on Sundays back in the day. More country then than any country now. Miss the Caldwell Bros
I wholeheartedly agree with FFarmerCharlie on this. I am a native New Yorker and this song is simply beautiful and crosses all cultural boundries. I love the jazz-country feel to this song and the smooth guitar runs and fiddle & piano all the way though. This song just sends me off into my mind and I love the way I return and then drift out again a few times before it is over.
Tommy was totally underrated. Toy drove them all hard, but Tommy never got the credit from the industry he deserved as a bass master. Paul T told me beautiful stories about him.
There ain't very many songs that I can listen to over & over in a continuous loop but this one I can ! It is so good & laid back but they are jamming their asses off & Toy is so so subtle with his licks although they burn white hot ! MTB was SO underated & still are to this day !!!
THE BEST BAND THAT GOD CREATED!!!!!! BEEN LISTENING FROM THE DAY THEY STARTED!!!! AND GOING TO DIE WITH 24HRS LIVE!!!!! PLAYING IN THE BACKGROUND!!!!!!! MT FOR EVER AND A DAY!!!!!!!!!!
I do not know much about Marshall Tucker Band, as their type of music isn't my favorite. But the couple songs they overplay ("Can't You See" and "Heard It In A Love Song") totally overshadow this. It's a ballad, but neither treacly nor too country-it's just right. This is an underrated gem. :)
Marshall Tucker Band 1st A New LIFE and Where we All Belong Are 3 of my all time favorite Albums been listenin to them for 30 years and still can listen to em over and over ....My definition of CLASSIC
Mr Toy Caldwell was light years ahead of his time in ability, His heart though was locked into a simpler time when cowboys ruled the range. The result will always be the same.. timeless classic writing that never grows old as the decades roll by.. He was my mentor, my hero and i say proudly "my friend". as long as I live I will sing your praises and your songs Toy,...I miss you brother...rjg
@RANDYJOEGALLOWAY Amen to that brother, I'd have loved to met Toy. Been a big fan since 1974. Saw them on the Midnight Special one night and was hooked for life. Went out the next day and bought the album Searching for a Rainbow. Finest album ever made, and Where we all belong was right behind it, in my opinion. After Tommy died and Toy left, things just wern't the same. I can be having a terrible day and listen to this song or Desert Skies and they always bring a smile to my face.
@RANDYJOEGALLOWAY i would give anything to have been alive when the Caldwell brothers were with The Marshall Tucker Band. these six man together had perfect music writing chemistry. i don't believe a band like this will ever exist again. incredible music.
I used to see them at the Brevard County Fair mid 80's so looks like ya don't know what you are talking about. Also fished with their two bus drivers who were brothers and took turns driving and running their fish camp on lake loch lossa .
you are right. That was the greatest days of my life... South Georgia and mushroons. wow. and loved all the ladies. Would NEVER trade or change those days for any I have seen since.
Aw, man! I have not heard this song in almost 30 years.. My long departed sister and best friend used to love this band! I know she is thinking about me up in Heaven... I found this song by accident on YT... Thanks for posting Hank!
I love the fiddle & the flute--This song reminds me of the best summer of my life ,in Ocean City , Maryland 1975. What GREAT music & what great friends.

This song is one of the few temporary cures for heartache. It says that no matter how bad things may be at the moment, there's always a new day dawning. I love this song and what it stands for.

@pp63100 good call. american idol is just a glorified karoake contest. and what's lady gaga famous for? because she dresses like a maniac? where is substance and talent?
luvkravmaga 8 months ago
@luvkravmaga ......American Idol is the perfect example of how this country has no human decency anymore, especially when the English guy, Simon was DEGRADING & CRITICIZING the contestants. I cant understand the pleasure people get watching others being humilated by pompous assholes???? HELL'S KITCHEN is another great example.

This IS my all time favorite song it has it all good lyrics it has rock, country, and who would've guessed a country rock band can do JAZZ and do it well ! and just think they did it in 1 take live in the studio then left it untouched or over dubbed or remixed how we here it is how they played it !!! I was lucky to see them 3 times with Toy (RIP) and was never let down they always sounded good !!! and if anyone says anything different I'd say they dont know a damn thing about good music !!!
crankycraig48 1 year ago
One of thier best. Rivals Alman Bros is the Country Rock Jazz format. Toy Caldwell was amazing. Saw them in 77 at Englishtown, NJ with the Dead, NRPS and Pure Prarie League. What a show. TS

Nothing like rolling into Moab or Vegas or Montrose at sunrise with this blaring through the speakers.
Too many decades, too many responsibilities, but plenty of great memories.
Of course there were a few that I did give a hoot about............

RANDYJOEGALLOWAY 1 year ago 43
@RANDYJOEGALLOWAY Amen to that brother, I'd have loved to met Toy. Been a big fan since 1974. Saw them on the Midnight Special one night and was hooked for life. Went out the next day and bought the album Searching for a Rainbow. Finest album ever made, and Where we all belong was right behind it, in my opinion. After Tommy died and Toy left, things just wern't the same. I can be having a terrible day and listen to this song or Desert Skies and they always bring a smile to my face.
