  • I just bought this album at a second-hand store, just for this song. I'm a child of the 80s and listen mainly to old-school rap, but you cannot deny the fact that this is a classic. Great group, great song, great era.

  • drew carey show s06e08 made me look this up

  • I'd need my own mic.

  • Larry Ramos and not Jules Alexander

  • Boy, this live footage shows what a tremendous contribution bassist Brian Cole made to the group's sound. If one scans their LPs, one might get the idea he was the most junior member of the band with the fewest songwriting and lead singing credits, but it just goes to show how misleading such things can be. Thanks for posting this.

  • Featured in an Se03, EP 12 of "Breaking Bad", never heard the song before, so came here to check it out.

  • @DarktownStudi0s Glad to have you here DT. Browse around. There's a lot of great old music here.

  • @DarktownStudi0s I'll never think about the line "who's bending down to give me a rainbow" the same way after seeing that episode. LOL

  • this says it's from Ravinia which is in a northern burb of Chicago. The Pickle Barrel was on Wells in Old Town - I vaguely remember that. Somewehere hip you wanted to go in high school.

  • hey!....i believe the songwriters dog inspired this wonderful song!!....

  • I always thought this song was called Wendy

  • @BradVic Best answer I've seen. Thanks!

  • The Association provided brilliant harmonies on "The United States of Existence" "Anything Goes" back in the eighties.

Just type in The United States of Existence and The Association

  • There is a lot going on in this song(many different instruments and background harmonies) unlike the music of today.

  • From Wikipedia:

During the recording session the Association members, sure that they were in the middle of recording a hit, called the song writer, me again, in to sing on the fade at the end. I can be heard singing a blues harmony as the song fades out..."

  • More from Wikipedia:

"There are many explanations of who Windy actually was in Ruthann's life. She would have you know, she being me, Ruthann Friedman, that none of them are true. Windy was indeed a female and purely a fictitious character who popped into my head one fine day in 1967..."

  • The song was written by a woman about a fictitious woman.

    From Wikipedia:

According to rumor, the original lyrics by Ruthann Friedman were about a man and The Association changed them to be about a woman.

  • why didn't they just name the song "wendy"? windy is unlikely for a name...unless she always has gas.

  • @BassFever74 Why do some people spell John, Jon? Why Barbara rather than Barbra? Who cares? LOL

  • @BassFever74 I think they actually singing about wind and not a girl.

  • "Many Moods of Ravinia” - 1967 WGN-TV special - Live performances of Reputation, Cherish, and Windy, 15m, A

  • One of the best quality videos with excellent sound...Bravo!

  • Is that what happened Ernie from from "My Three Sons"?

  • WINDY!

  • I was born in '67...i feel so old! And the outfits/swimsuits look disgraceful!!

  • @oLdSkOoLkisS they look great, that is what you saw and what you got.1967 I was 15 and saw the Association in concert which by thye way was very groovy for it's time partner. Heck, I had RED pants with strips on them

  • Is that Austin Powers on Lead Vocals?

  • this sounds awesome!

  • Thanks for posting this great footage!

  • I can ask Jim Yester is you want when he gets back from the Happy Together Tour. Email me if you want me too.

    Steve Fischler

    Magnolia Gold Records

Home of the Legendary Delaney Bramlett

  • to be honest...id rather listen and watch the model, rather than these geeky dudes.

  • Everyone knows it's windy, in Chicago.

  • Wow, the fact that this occurred 30 years before I was born irritates me...Music like this doesn't exist in my terrible generation, I hate it!

Excuse me, I had to rant :P

  • @ItsInMyInstincts Sorry you were not there with us. At least Youtube can bring some of it back for all of us!!

  • I didn't know Austin Powers was the lead singer for The Assc.

  • i found this song in the series breading bad Season3 Episode11. Nice song.

  • ..damn...I'm super impressed at how well they're playing and singing, at same time, doin' it live for real ...playin real chords n singin' actual real (intricate) harmonies ! Man..my hat is off to these cats..I luvved those songs when I was a kid..had no idea they could actually do it live..woah!

  • @bigjim19602003 It's great to hear that young folks like yourself are discovering 'The Association', and diggin' it as you are! Man, this was music that I first heard WAY back when, and I was in Jr. High at the time!

The thing is, is that this music sounded sooooo good back in the 60's, I used to wonder if anybody would like it way in the future, or not. Well, now it is the 'future', and this music has stood the test of time, has it not?

    Good music is timeless!

    Blessed 'Be

    Fluffy

  • never gathered together so many talents to give a pop masterpiece!

  • groovy, baby. YEAH!

  • And just think just a couple of years later, the anti war protesters at Grant Park and Buckingham Fountain, the areas where "Wendy" dancing in the video, were being bashed by Chicago Police at the 1968 Presidential Convention.

  • wHOEVER SAID NERDY LOOKING GUYS CAN´T BE SEXY OR SUCCSESFUL, DOESN+T KNOW RUSS G!!! i just cuuld die 4 him

  • I JUST LOVE RUSS GIUGERE!!! WHO SAYS NERDY LOOKING GUYS CAN´T BE TOO SEXY AND SUCCESFUL? JUST DIE 4u RUSS:

  • @abejaonce Thanks for telling me which one is Russ. On the recorder is Terry Kirkman (I don't think he did as good in this clip as he did on record), Larry Ramos is playing one guitar, Russ Giguere is on tambourine (also played guitar), Ted Bleuchel is on drums, Jim Yester on the Viking Hagstrom guitar (his is sunburst in color, Elvis played Al Casey's cherry red one on the comeback special-he also played keyboards), and Brian Cole is playing a Gibson Electric bass guitar

  • @JayBBluejay Sorry I misspelled Ted's last name-it's B-L-U-E-C-H-E-L.

  • I JUST LOVE RUSS GIUGERE!!! WHO SAYS NERD LOOKING GUYS CAN´T BE TOO SEXY AND SUCCESFUL? JUST DIE 4u RUSS:

  • well just had my 50th bday & band played this song for me! I'm Wendy but I loved it!

  • Windy's tripping down the stairs of the Windy City. hehe, I get it!

That model looks a lot like Sharon Tate. Or did they all look like that then?

  • Back in the days of 50s and 60s, although many like my parents didn't have the chance or opportunity to get a college education, but performers like the associations here, prove to be more intellegent, smart, decent, and had more class and character than many of the jerks today, even those today with educational advantages

  • I can't believe it, usually the after-performance declines from the original record. These guys have charisma! The melody is enough to wash the daily problems away and sleep peacefully for the next day and refresshing.

  • Windy was supposedly a goofy hippy guy in real life. Apparently, they changed it to a girl because someone thought a song about a guy named Windy wouldn't go over.

  • Where is she now...

  • Guess what....i gotta fever...and the only prescription is MORE FLUTE!!

  • @oLdSkOoLkisS

Can you imagine if it had a cowbell?

  • @ebf1957 yes...a cowbell would be KILLER!!

  • @oLdSkOoLkisS

Can you imagine if it had a cowbell?

  • 1910 Fruitgum Company.

I haven't thought about that name for years!

    Thanks

  • So different to see Actual Musicians.

I bet alot of today is just LipSync.

    Like Superbowl Halftime.

  • This is sooooo awesome. Thanks for posting this performance!

  • duh. i didn't note the title! disregard me!

  • this is live 1967 most likely give or take

  • The Association on tour in 2011; Feb 12 Queens college colden auditorium flushing NY (with the Vogues & The Happenings); Feb 13 Rams Head Annapolis MD.

  • The girl was very beautiful, reminds me of Alicia Silverstone.

  • @coyclown she's prettier than Alicia

  • ahhhh, back when music actually had a musical quality, sounded great and made you feel great!!

  • The live performance wasn't filmed in Chicago. Only the blond model was filmed in Chicago.

  • @zevpost Do you have any information about where the live performance was recorded? I would like to fix the title if I get the right info and can confirm it.

  • @zevpost John 1948 I presume that it was most likely recorded on the west coast as that's where most TV shows were recorded. I con't have any other details however.

  • @zevpost John 1948 I presume that it was most likely recorded on the west coast as that's where most TV shows were recorded. I don't have any other details however.

  • @zevpost - This was part of a TV show filmed by Chicago's WGN channel 9. I believe that this was filmed at Ravinia Festival in suburban Chicago (Highland Park).

  • @Fender1980 Thanks. I have changed the title to reflect that info.

  • @zevpost

The girl in chicago Windy scene is an edited film put in between the song which I think is from the Monterrey Pop festival

  • @musickeys8 but why would they film a girl in Chicago for the Monterrey Pop festival?

  • @judasinwaiting Artistic expression???

  • @zevpost ...and John1948...The info from 'Fender1980' is correct. This show, which included other artists, was called "The Many Moods Of Ravinia" and filmed by WGN in Chicago. Wish they had done more of these! :/

  • RIP Brian Cole xx

  • Wow - this song always takes me back to childhood. I remember listening to this when I was 4 years old. Thank you for this.

  • The Guy who's singing with the oriental man looks like his teeth are to big for his mouth. They're off key also. Other than that it's a cute song.

  • i am elated with joy when i hear / see this!!

  • lol at the chinese man lol ,,,,,,,, lol

  • Fantastic live version - hot babe in a bikini - and Chicago circa 1967 before my birth and the Sears Tower.

  • Great to hear live clips from this era which are rare as lip-sync was usually the prescribed method.

  • The actress in the video--I recognize her from TV. Perhaps she was in a TV movie during the 70's or even in a series. Does anybody know who she is? I loved the harmony of voices of this band. Even live they sound great.

  • @lmccra That was Sharon Tate, a beautiful actress from the 60's. Unfortunately she was one of the victims of that sick cult leader Charles Manson.

  • @dannojmanno Thanks for that info. I didn't recognize her at all! I remember her in the movie, "Valley of the Dolls".

  • @lmccra you were right not to recognise her because it is not her!

  • Comment removed

  • @dannojmanno erm no it's not Sharon Tate. There was more than one blonde haired actress around in the 60s

  • @lmccra she does look familiar... but it is not sharon tate, google sharon tate and look at the pics, its not her. im guessing it was just some attractive model who never got that famous.

  • Hey I knew this city in the vid looks familiar wow chicago 1967!

  • @COBALT6ixty Yup.. The Windy City. I love 60's pop songs that go "Ba..Ba...Baaa"

  • The Association live in concert on Friday Dec 3, 2010 at YMCA Boulton Center Bay Shore New York and Saturday Dec 4, 2010 Allentown Symphony Hall Allentown PA.

  • @rocmaven Thank you. If I lived anywhere near NY / PA I would go to this concert for sure. I know some others will be able take advantage of this information.

  • Is Terry playing a piccolo or a flute?

  • @victoriaindigo it's a piccolo, a flute is much longer and has a deeper and more rich sound.

  • @victoriaindigo

Neither. It's a recorder. (a kids tin whistle) The album has him playing a piccolo.

  • someone doesn't quite fit hehehe

  • Looks like a bunch of dweebs from my high school choir. I look like the guy with the glasses.

  • @ad47aw

    lol you dweeb :P

  • I loved this song the first time around, and still do 43 years later... even though I have no idea what it means?

  • @pmcmanus420 its about a hot chick

  • The Association are playing this weekend Saturday & Sunday Nov 13-14, 2010 at Sun Coast Casino Resort Las Vegas NV.

  • oh my....the chicago skyline looks SO EMPTY. the video is almost as amazing for its architectural-time-capsule quality as for the music.

  • Does this band capture the vibe of the 1960's or what?

  • This was not the Somthers show, was it? I do recall that Wendy was performed live on Somthers (the first time the general public heard the song), before it was released

  • @GBS1043 I wish I knew. If anyone has information about this clip please let us know.

  • @John1948OneB This is a concert that was filmed in Chicago in early summer of 1967. "Cherish" which is also on Youtube is from this same show.

  • @GBS1043 Windy not Wendy :P

  • Aaaaahhh... Windy...

  • Is Terry playing a recorder?

  • Simply put - An Elite Band In Any Era.

  • i especially love how singer counts off beat midsong! windy must be somebody's grandmother by now!

  • The part with the girl prancing around is silly, but they sound great!

  • @Highland804

silly? maybe - but hot 60s babe more to the point......

  • @Highland804 ,

which would you rather have the pretty girl performing carefree and smiling with decent melody music of the 60s or modern heavy metal scenes with gangster tendencies and tatoos plaster all over and half the performers on methophetamins today's music.

  • Bass player went to the change in the intro too soon ...James Brown would have fined him ...

  • Hey, isn't that Ernie from 'My Three Sons' singing on the right? !!

  • @jonsilence You mean Brian Cole?

  • Man! That brings the memories rushing back!!! Awsome!

  • Great video, I'd never seen this before. Cool to see Chicago whithout a skyline!

  • Great video, I'd never seen it before. It was a thrill seeing Chicago without a skyline!

  • this version is simply too darn diddly dang LONG.

  • lovin' this LIVE version! the associate was an amazing band!

  • The Association are on tour in 2010; Sept 20 The Villages Savannah Center The Villages FL; Oct 8 University Of Saint Francis Fort Wayne IN; Oct 9 Tupelo Music Hall Londonderry NH; Oct 21 West Virginia University Creative Arts Center Morgantown WV; Nov 6 Wild Rose Casino Resort Emmetsburg IA; Nov 13-14 Suncoast Hotel Casino Las Vegas NV; Dec 3 YMCA Boulton Center for the Performing Arts Bay Shore NY; Dec 4 Allentown Symphony Hall Allentown, PA.

  • Awesome!!!!

  • Cool, they pulled off a groovy live version. What ever happened to top 40 radio? Replaced by angry, bellicose rhetoric I suppose. Even though I was born the year this song came out I can only look at this and think our culture has become more vulgar and stupid since then. Although the middle part with the girl kinda looks like Nazi soft porn.

  • ASIAN IN 60S BAND? HOW!!

  • Great loved this tune back in the good days, thanks for posting this clip

  • Amazing harmony!

  • That is prime corn fed, Grade A 1960's American pussy in this video. It doesn't get better than that.

  • wow that girl in the videos is gorgeous!

  • this video was taped in chicago

  • @1957chriscraft DO you have any more info? Was part of a tour? What was the venue? Anything?

  • @John1948OneB you can see lake mich, buckingham fountain, grant park, pickle barrel on wells st, navy pier, chi riverfront @ mich ave,in the video probally 1968-9. They were probally taped in los angelos

  • @1957chriscraft Thanks.

  • @John1948OneB there is buckingham fountain, lake michigan, pickle barrel in old town, river walk @ michigan ave, grant park, probally around 1968-69

  • Wow what a great live version..where was this taped?

  • TOPNOTCH!!!

  • Dope.

  • Currently 3 members of this original group are still touring and are still great. Russ Giguere (tamborine), Larry Ramos (Guitar), Jim Yester (high tenor and rhythm guitar) still sound great. Yester recently rejoined the group and is just the winning piece. Keeping it in the family the current bass player is Larry's brother and the keyboardist is bassist Brian Cole's son. Terry Kirkman (flutist) has retired from the music business.

  • Saw The Association on Friday in NYC. They were sooo good. Opened and closed the show with Windy.

  • Thx for da upload, memories of the good old days of drugs, free love and rock- n- roll

  • he's breaking a heck of a sweat on that penny whistle solo

  • I love the Association one truly great vocal groups of the sixites.

  • Wonder who the video chick is ?

  • @Spagfan : is it only ME, or does "Windy" look like the 60's version of Alicia Silverstone ???

  • @RitzyTrailer I see Reese Witherspoon as well.

  • Amazing harmonies. Only the Byrds, or CSN&Y compare imo.

  • @jaybird45

I agree...and the Beach Boys of course.

  • the first concert that I ever went to was The Association! Great video.

  • Same here. First concert ever.

My mom took me. It was 1967 or 1968 and I think the 1910 Fruitgum Company opened up for them. Not sure on that, though.

  • Needs more flute

  • @orange105 That's one problem with live vs. studio recordings. You can take a whole studio orchestra with you on gigs.

  • @John1948OneB too bad they didn't use a mellotron

  • windy. please come back to me. you know it will be different this time.

  • Nice to hear an actual live version of this, as opposed to the usual lipsynched version, standard for the time....hard to imagine "Windy" is probably someone's grandmother now.

  • When I first started to follow the post-British Invasion American groups, The Association was my favorite and I thought this was one of their best songs. They had so much talent. Saw them in a lounge in South Lake Tahoe in the 80s. Sad. RIP Brian Cole

  • ..Every one knows it's Timmyyyy

  • They were really good.

  • Oh, man does that bring back memories! Thanks for uploading!

  • ha ha thinking that myself about breaking bad from last nite!!!!

  • Got to get a clip of the Breaking Bad scene with this song. I know it's morbid, but actually very good!

  • Great song! Windy sure was gorgeous. I wonder what she looks like now well into her 60s. Also, Does anybody know what city that is where she is creeping down the streets? Recognize any buildings? I don't think it is LA because I don't see City Hall, which was the tallest building in LA in the 1960s.

  • @TheNuwaver "Windy" is covorting in Chicago. The fountain that she passes by is Buckinham Fountain on the lakefront. Probably chose Chicago because it's "The Windy City".

  • @gjm1792 Thanks for that. I did not see Sears Tower, but it was not built yet either I guess.

  • @TheNuwaver chicago

  • This song was just on Breaking Bad =D

  • @eboing YES!!! Drove me crazy wondering where i heard it from before! Drew Carey show with the Harp! :)

  • Just great!

  • really nice clip...

  • This is a great track, and I really had forgotten about it until that new 7up commercial with Brad Garrett started playing on the radio. Which is great, because it will get a whole new generation researching this kind of 60s music!

  • I finally get to see what Windy looks like in this video. Just as I imagined her to be. Great video.

  • theres no audio/video lag of about 5 seconds here its about .5 secinds and we played this for marching band this was an awsome song on bari sax on the octive
