Chuck kicks ass and so does this album. This is my favorite stuff from Faith No More, and it's just one of my favorite albums of all time. Yeah, Chuck isn't the best vocalist of all time, but hey who cares? His singing fits this album PERFECTLY, and it's a killer album. Original, creative, etc. That's what it's about.
Chuck's voice is charming. It is capable of gaining people's affection, as it gained mine til the point that I even prefer his voice than Patton's when it comes to singing the old Faith No More songs. On the other hand, Patton is a monster. Not only as a vocalist: he has the musical understanding of a real musician. It's not just a matter of vocal range, but of versatility in all senses. When in hell would Chuck get close of the awesome crazyness of Fantomas, for example?
@phreestylesk8r how do you hate chuck's vocals in that? have you ever tried to personally sing it? it's probably one of the hardest songs to sing to, the feeling and expression are almost impossible to replicate (though Mike Patton's version does a bit of justice)
@KillaSpinna i wasnt trying to say it wasnt talented, just dont like it. im sure if i really sit and give it a listen i will like that song. but i do love chucks voice
@seangroc I think the bleak musical landscape that was the 80's was an important backdrop for this album release. It was and is wonderful because it's definately not regular formulaic bullshit. "Washington Blvd., east bound...33...can I get a transfer MAN!?"
psideresider - I don't think there's any deep or hidden meaning in Chuck's decision to paraphrase the same lyrics in Chinese Arithmetic and RnR - it was probably just meant to be clever or ironic in some way. Greg Dulli does the same thing on the Afghan Whigs CD Debonair when he repeats the line "its locked it's jaws and now it's swallowing" in the song Debonair and again in the song "If I Were Going."
We've got the same ideas, we got the same old fears;
Different colors sometimes, but hey, who cares?
It's just years that shears our lives apart, like the
Time you tried to teach your nephew to fart, he couldn't do
it. PUSH!
Thats from RnR and is almost excactly the same verse thats in this song. Just curious if anybody knew why? And it should be noted that billy, roddy, and puff are some of the best musicians and one of the main reasons the band is unreal imo
@sparrowrory Ironically given that synth pop is going through something of a mainstream revival these days the keyboards on 'Introduce Yourself' actually seem less dated than on 'Real Thing' and 'Angel Dust'. When I first heard this album in 1996 the synth seemed a little cheesey, but now it's sort of oddly contemporary. Weird how things come around.
Chuck and Mike sound nothing alike. The only reason FNM's first 2 albums were purchased by anyone was the rest of the band and the music. chuck's singing was horrible, and the reason they hadn't really gone anywhere. It was painfully evident that Chuck was the problem the minute Mike came on to the scene. He owned every song after that, and any time the originals were played. Chucks voice is monotone speaking at best. The first 2 albums should be remade in the studio with mike.
@generaljihad yea but you completely discredit chuck. the two albums hes on get alot of criticism but at the end of the day they are both fantastic albums and have a certain sound, vibe if you will, that only chuck mosley could bring to the table. Now patton had something similar and completely different in his all over the place singing style that i feel became the definitive voice for this band.
This will one day be one of the best albums of all time, FNM for ever! i first heard these guys when i was 16 im now 33 and love the music they made even more
The original singer made FNM super stars but M. Patton began to fucked that up for them...He never took their work seriously, he makes fun of FNM and other pop bands while covering thier hits. Their first albulm was far better than anythang that came after it.
@quantafunk "Epic" made them stars. Mike was the singer on that song. He was there on all their best albums. I don't know what you're talking about. Mike was the singer that sang on most of the albums and had the most talent out of any of the singers that they ever had.
This song is a masterpiece. And yeah I agree, when I was first getting into Faith No More, Chuck didn't sound that different than Mike did in The Real Thing. Both good singers but of course Patton is one of the best of all time. I almost like Introduce yourself better than the real thing. Chuck just did it dirty the way punk and metal was supposed to be. It was basically pure funk metal until Mike Patton lend his influence into a experimental world on Angel Dust and they got better since.
When you think about it, Chuck and Mike don't sound that different. When I first started getting into Faith No More, I thought it was always Mike until I did some research.
@Forbelicious I think Chuck's style suits these songs best, certainly this one and We Care Alot, but when comparing Chuck to Mike in general there's only one winner haha
@BrutalJay1 With all due respect to Chuck, he couldn't do a tenth of what Patton did post-The Real Thing. Imagine him trying to do vocals for something on Angel Dust? Imagine ANY vocalist besides Patton trying to do something on Angel Dust? It wouldn't work.
@TheEmotionMachine Mosley doesn't need to sing on Angel Dust he sings on We care a lot which is actually just as experimental and nihilistic as Angel Dust
@BrutalJay1 They don't sound that different on these albums, however if chuck would have had to do the vocals on say "Dust" it probably wouldn't have worked because of the limitations of his voice. nonetheless this album is great with him on it, probably better than it would've done with mike. at that time it was just a perfect match.

I those that try to pit Chuck against Mike, in the end, completely miss the point. I'm glad as hell that both vocalists worked with the musicians.

I dont know why there is even an argument over the singing, when it's the overall, far-ahead-of-it's-time music that defines FNM.
