We need to gradually move away from our sickening fixation and dependency on oil. Alternate energy sources can assist us in this project. If we use other sources for power, events such as this will not happen again….and again…and again.

How often must we repeat our mistakes before we truly learn from them? How unintelligent are we, honestly?
This just really blows my mind! You would think that these companies would have to have a plan of action that goes along with the plans to build. How can our government approve the building of these oil wells if there is no emergency plan for this type of accident. One should go hand in hand with the other. There should be some sort of class action suit against our government for the negligence they have shown. It is their duty to protect our waters and our people.
I am wondering why the Ixtoc (toxic) spill is never mentioned, while the Valdez spill is legendary. Is it because a single man was to blame for the latter? There was definitely much less global thinking in 1979 – if people or places were suffering it mattered less; it was less immediate. The world was larger, so most people could care only so much. Global self-awareness is lethal to the old world...

Hey, brain-dead knuckle-draggers, why do you continue to believe it's okay that we destroy the world and our own environment? Even animals know better than to foul their own nests! Simply because oil is natural, that doesn't mean that we should still be using it. Arsenic is natural, too, but you don't see people eating the stuff. Get a clue before you kill us all (all in the name of money!)
Of course it's natural; it's also dirty, expensive, and unsafe.
Solar energy is also natural. And clean. and cheap, incredibly easy to harness. But energy companies won't invent cheap solar panels or batteries because they can make more money off of oil addiction.
Oil's going to get more and more expensive, more and more dirty, it's going to emit more and more carbon into the atmosphere, and them, eventually, it will run out altogether. Tell me,, how will drilling on land solve ANY of that?

@MrYoubrian What can the government do in this situation? The governent has zero expertise in fixing damaged wells. In the video it explains that it was the oil company that finally fixed the situation by drilling relief wells NOT the government. FYI, it is BP fault for not having relief wells in place or working to drill relief wells immediately. Now, like back in 1971, the government can not do a thing to fix the problem nor am I asking them to.
This has to be the best reporting I have seen in a long long time. People..this is the furthest thing from being a partisian issue. This is even bigger than man vs nature, or some environmentalist movement, or any of that. What this is, if you didn't catch it, is HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF!!! None of this was taught in the schools. None of this ever was talked about during Exxon-Valdez. Don’t let this story go unheard. Everyone should put this link on their Facebook or MySpace page!
The technology is simple: You need a relief well in the same season you start pumping. It's called "having a plan B", and every aspect of our lives needs a plan B. What's needed isn't more technology, it's regulation to force them to spend money on security, and constant vigilance against corruption so those regulations both exists and are enforced. There is no invisible hand taking care of this by magic, it's all up to us.
I say we round up all the major share holders of all the oil companies, and pump them into the well to try and stop the leak.
Or have a national lottery and each winner gets to shoot one major share holder, on national tv...billions of people would watch and cheer every time one of those parasites was exterminated. 8D
That takes me back. To be honest, I forgot. It all came back to me now. I was a teenager in New Jersey than. My biggest worry was Girls, Zits, my summer job, and getting my first car. How could I be SO DAM STUPID!!!!
The oil industry is full of greedy fucks, who really only care about the next dollar...not safety concerns...otherwise, that hard earned money would have been used for stricter safety and redundency equipment...but have they...No, not in 31 years, and the only tear they are shedding for that leaking oil isn;t for the enviroment...its watching their money float away
In order to stop big oil you need to kick them in the wallet and their offshore bank accounts. One way to achieve this is to blockade all oil refineries in the world. Let no vehicles, people, or supplies in or out for as long as it take to shut them down, by blockading for at least +2 years. Call to action the hippies, homeless, jobless, and Students to take shifts on the front line of this war. If you are employed sponsor the blockaders with food, supplies and shelter (when they're off shift).
@StartLoving3 LOL!!! Perfect. And after plunging your thick head in the toilet, notyourrealname8---go for a nice long swim down in the gulf in all that thick sticky muck. Play around in it for awhile and let us know how much fun all that 'natural' energy is.
@Thisisnotmyrealname8: The issue isn't whether the energy is "natural" or not, I'm not sure where you got that idea.
The issue is that oil pollutes, it emits a ton of CO2, and we are no longer capable of increasing production sufficiently to meet demand, not even if we were to drill on land or offshore. The fact that they're drilling so deep is proof of this: the easy to get stuff has run out. We need something besides the black goop.
bahahaha hey, all you conservatives and....what's the opposite of environmentalists? idiots? sure, oil IS natural but it IS not a renewable resource, and it sure IS not good for the ocean it is covering. when it's gone, it's gone. at least for another couple hundred million years. (although, maybe you think god is going to create more for you, which i assure you is not going to happen.)
and the idea is to STOP drilling, not just make it "even more difficult". duh.
@Thisisnotmyrealname8 Man-made is not natural, and natural is not inherently good (or bad). Tobacco is all-natural. Most medicines are not natural (penicillin being a counter-example).
@Thisisnotmyrealname8 Oil does not fit most people's definition of "natural", but natural is not what we're going for. We're going for environmentally friendly. Natural is not inherently good. Tobacco is all-natural. Most medicines are not.
@Thisisnotmyrealname8 Hey dumbshit, making it easier to drill on land won't stop leaks from occuring. Yeah, let's let it cover beaches, homes, and streets instead. You people are so smart.
Not when it is processed to hell and back before it is usable...GMO foods are still natural food that comes from nature but it is not in its natural state. Quit making excuses for our retarded reliance on oil. We need to stop our dependence on it all together!
poor engineers getting a bad rep from this. it isn't the engineers fault! it is the corporations fault for not investing in research control/mitigation techniques to protect the environment if when a spill occurs.
Thank you Dick C. And the Bushes and all the rich Oil companies and it's people that make this happened. Do you know that a car motor can run with water? Yes look in you tube water engine it has been invented but thank you to mr greed we still use gas and oil to go to the gym! Sad
Oh hey maybe this should inspire us to harness the sun's energy? I don't get why it's 2010 and we're still using this dirty fuel (along with coal, etc). Has the US government not seen Xenon: Girl of the 21st century? We should be living in space by now! But here we are trying to contain this oil spill.
ALL the more reason to GET rid of oil and go to more LESS dangerus stuf like solar, taking the hidrogen out of water and using that to make a car go. basicly just releases oxogen... BUT NO these FUCKING FAT CATS. want money so they go and kill people that try to take their money. WELL WE SHOULD JUST SAY NO... they have killed people who came out with some inventions that can take a 9v battery and make it power a house for a YEAR. AND THEY KILLED HIM. 2 months later. ya fat cats
drill baby drill, right Palin? My entire fucking fishing trips are ruined because of this shit. No regulations, no safety net, no nothing, but they're making billion dollar profits. The same irresponsible tactics that got us into the financial mess we're in now.
Rachel Maddows is the best of all. She is the only one who goes deep and into detail on issues with FACTS. Look at Rand Paul, the way she demostrated the ACORN farse and lies of Fox News, the Afghan war, Don't ask Don't Tell, Scott Brown's bullshit about her, Glenn Beck on Global Warming ....
Shocking that this happened 31 years ago in 200 ft of water, and they did the SAME things to try & prevent it as they did then. Only relief wells stopped it. Rachel kinda missed one big point though, they DID advance how to prevent this - but BP went CHEAP & didn't use the new type of blowout device. They used the old device & now they should go to PRISONNNNNNNN!
I remember when Rachel hosted Countdown for a few weeks 2 years ago and thinking how great she was, much better than Olbermann. It's really quite sad that someone like Beck gets so much attention while Rachel is ignored by the so-called liberal, mainstream media.
31 years ago we had a similar oil spill in the Gulf (oil rig blows up, dumps oil at an alarming rate) and they use the same techniques then to clean it up, as the do today. In 31 years, you haven't found better technologies to fix your fuck ups BIG OIL???
well lets be reasonable she obviously wrong because she a lesbian, just like everyone different is immediately wrong. sarcasm aside this is a brilliant story.
@fishhead06 I dont disagree, i dont like her. shes right, doesnt mean i have to like her, so i resort to name calling in the comments section, not arguing with other comments on the internet. I would rather bang my head on the wall
they wouldn't be so profitable if their liability wasn't capped by the federal gov't and its sham courts, and they actually had to pay the full costs of the damages they imposed.
in any case, the return on investment is much more profitable for lobbying DC.
@drizztmay So I guess you wouldn't have a problem eating a Shrimp Cocktail from that region say in 5 years from now. Oil is a natural occuring checmical, but BP going to dig for it and having it spread all over the ocean isn't NATURAL.
@drizztmay You have not heard of it because momma's home schoolin did not teach you much except how to impregnate your siblings at recess you sad little ignorant fuck..I'm surprised your stupid ass closed your bible long enouph to log on to your parents computer....Don't get caught..
she seems to try to sound like john stewart, i think she shouldnt be afraid to just relax an use sarcasm. LOL she's been funnier, and more enjoy able to watch .
@drizztmay LOL very little side effects? Its funny I remember my elementary school science textbooks showing millions of dead fish and beached whales and dolphins who could not breathed basically covered in oil. Do what that other guy said and add a little petroleum grease on your burger on a daily basis and come back in a month, see if your still breathing.
@drizztmay dont be an idiot. i ttok my dog to the beach 3 years after that disaster and had to clean him wiht Varsol after he escaped into the water. that was a real disaster and this one will be much worse. and in case you are wondering, there arent many things i agree with Rachel Maddow on, but this is certainly one of them. we should all boycott BP.
@drizztmay If you consider hundreds of thousands of dying animals and mammals covered in oil "few side effects" you have been sadly in the wrong science class. On top of this, have you not listened to what's already happening economically as well in that region. Its devastating on so many levels.
our entire infrastructure is crumbling, we have not seen the last deepwater horizon, ixtoc II, chernobyl, three-mile-island, titanic, great depression, katrina, hindenburg, world war, vietnam war, iraq war, 9-11, dark ages, holocaust, potato famine, oil embargo, dust bowl, or union carbide bhopal india, disasters. history repeats itself, and its only getting started. it will get worse. SUBSCRIBE TO SURVIVE - VIRAL SURVIVOR
Chomsky argues that profits are private whereas risks are public. Financial institutions profit and the rich get richer. Financial institutions fail - the public gets nailed. Oil companies pump oil and make profits. They spill...you guessed it, risk becomes public.
@AtomicAbility Really? This solution has worked for the Russians in the past. They have successfully closed 5 wells in the past using the nuke method. Google it, if you don't believe.
Well 9months to cap a well 30yrs ago, that just means it was a small leak 30 yrs ago because if it took 9 months to cap and it wasn't as big as the exxon valdez spill
and all that because of capitalism... Drill deeper, make money, absorb more oil, make money, dont invest money in "problem resolution" also call "If", make money, more money, more more money....sad, and they dont fucking care about what's happening, lets be honest, they dont give a shit.
Finally, something that Rachel can't blame on George Bush. I hope she will blame this outrageous spill and lack of action on our worthless President Obama.
Her Icon man that can't do anything wrong. With that said, now lets pump about 5 tons of that heavy mud down here yap. Then seal it with concrete.
@crpledger it sucked. i took my dog there 3 years later and had to cleam him with varsol. if you used goggles in the water, you could see the tar on the bottom right off shore, still washing in. it was a mess.
They did it on purpose then, and they did it again. And I bet you that the BP assholes won't PAY for damages either. No fishing, no coastal living, no compensation...tough luck people.
@asiandiversion I'm guessing that this is a troll but in the event that it isn't
"QQ she's a racist and liberal"
calling white people white is racist?
cause you cant make an argument about how the oil company's are doing a good job of being environmentally responsible can you? really there was nothing in her statement that can be refuted by anyone with a logical argument. now go ahead and say my point is moot cause i didn't use proper punctuation or capitalization.

poor engineers getting a bad rep from this. it isn't the engineers fault! it is the corporations fault for not investing in research control/mitigation techniques to protect the environment if when a spill occurs.

Thank you Dick C. And the Bushes and all the rich Oil companies and it's people that make this happened. Do you know that a car motor can run with water? Yes look in you tube water engine it has been invented but thank you to mr greed we still use gas and oil to go to the gym! Sad

2 months later. ya fat cats

if they don't have plans for a oil leak we are stuffed when a nuclear power plant has a problem.
fsfer 1 year ago
@fsfer
I could be wrong but there seems to have been a lot more money spent on safety procedures on Nuc than oil over the last few decades. I hope anyway.
Interestingly, nature seems to have returned to Chernobyl as fit as ever. I wonder how long it takes to recover from these oil spills.
Not that nature being tough excuses the stupidity of profit driven multi nationals, of course.

They used the old device & now they should go to PRISONNNNNNNN!

they wouldn't be so profitable if their liability wasn't capped by the federal gov't and its sham courts, and they actually had to pay the full costs of the damages they imposed.
in any case, the return on investment is much more profitable for lobbying DC.

BladedgeES 1 year ago
@drizztmay LOL very little side effects? Its funny I remember my elementary school science textbooks showing millions of dead fish and beached whales and dolphins who could not breathed basically covered in oil. Do what that other guy said and add a little petroleum grease on your burger on a daily basis and come back in a month, see if your still breathing.
AtomicAbility 1 year ago 4
@drizztmay dont be an idiot. i ttok my dog to the beach 3 years after that disaster and had to clean him wiht Varsol after he escaped into the water. that was a real disaster and this one will be much worse. and in case you are wondering, there arent many things i agree with Rachel Maddow on, but this is certainly one of them. we should all boycott BP.
jimtsmith1 1 year ago
@drizztmay If you consider hundreds of thousands of dying animals and mammals covered in oil "few side effects" you have been sadly in the wrong science class. On top of this, have you not listened to what's already happening economically as well in that region. Its devastating on so many levels.

Chomsky argues that profits are private whereas risks are public. Financial institutions profit and the rich get richer. Financial institutions fail - the public gets nailed. Oil companies pump oil and make profits. They spill...you guessed it, risk becomes public.
7jerryv7 1 year ago 2
the solution is simple. nuke it. the blast wave will crush the well and pinch it shut for good.
st0rmraven 1 year ago
@st0rmraven LOL or open up a gap that would last for thousands of years. Even if it works the radiation would be worse than the oil.
AtomicAbility 1 year ago
@AtomicAbility Really? This solution has worked for the Russians in the past. They have successfully closed 5 wells in the past using the nuke method. Google it, if you don't believe.
st0rmraven 1 year ago
Well 9months to cap a well 30yrs ago, that just means it was a small leak 30 yrs ago because if it took 9 months to cap and it wasn't as big as the exxon valdez spill

Finally, something that Rachel can't blame on George Bush. I hope she will blame this outrageous spill and lack of action on our worthless President Obama.
