neil peart is the most overated and boring drummer ever... then comes mike portnoy. I do not get why people think they are so amazing when there are drummers like thomas pridgen, bran dailor or drew goddard
The only reason i can think of is that they have not even seen these original and extremely talented drummers
Neil Pert IS good i will say that... but most of the stuff he's doing in this video is very easy and can be done by a decent drummer with a a little practice.
@Zombieman27 No. Considering that Neil is marking 30 years of Rush, it is a very insignificant solo. It seems overly reshearsed and uninspired. It is mere execusion of technique. With three or more instructional DVDs from Neil, I expect something more spectacular from a live anniversary solo.
@martinholde dude, from the start of the acoustic side of his kit, to the part where he plays the electric marimba is all improvised. the foot pattern is obviously rehearsed, but the stuff he does with his hand is 100% improvised.
@Zombieman27 "Dude", you can like this solo all you want. I don't like this solo and I explained why. If you have the capacity to dig through some interviews of him, you'll learn that he's the 1/3 of the band who insists on practicing before a rehearsal, so all details are in place. This includes solos. Of course some parts are improvised - unfortunately not most of it.
@Zombieman27 Actually, why don't you pay attention to "Neil Peart - Taking Center Stage"? You'll then discover how thorough his approach to technice, practicing and soloing is.
@martinholde seen it. and in that video he practices the electronic side of his solo, and the love for sale. he doesnt rehearse the part on his acoustic side, like i said
@Zombieman27 If you have seen it, you should know that very few things Neil Pert does is improvisation. Everything from snare drum paradiddles to to triplet groupings on the high toms are carefully thought out. It is some of the things about Neil that make him stand out in the industry. He is an excellent drummer. I'm just stating why I don't care for this particullar solo. Not everything is about skill and technique or ability to improvise. Music should be the main factor.
@martinholde he might be rehearsing the main idea of what hes going to perform, but every time i watch the solos on this tour, they all are different (on the acoustic side) so even if he does rehearse it, he switches it up every new gig
@Zombieman27 Really? You're doing this now? I could be wrong but this does feel like talking to an offended Neil Peart fan. I know the type. Besides, you have presented no factual or objective statements yet. I have - explainging why I dislike this particular solo. You simply disagree, just by saying "yes, it's improvised". Sure it is - parts of it, but that doesn't make it any more appealing to me. I prefer Steve Gadd, Keith Carlock or even Mike Bordin over Neil Peart. Check it out
@martinholde lol im not offended and i dont think you get to decide that im offended. all i was trying to say fromt the beginning was to correct your initial remark "it seems overly rehearsed." all i was trying to do was correct that and say it is somewhat rehearsed. im not trying to make you like this solo, but maybe you should stop posting paragraph-long pointless comments deciding what people mean when they say something
@martinholde of fine man if u wanna be a dick and put words in someone's mouth go right ahead, just dont complain when everyone you know starts to hate you because you change their words into something false
@Zombieman27 I didn't put words into your mouth I QUOTED YOU. There's a difference. I couldn't care less what you think about me. I expressed my opinion, explained why and backed it up by example. You have done nothing but simply disagree, which is fine, but haven't been objective or rational, so this converstion is over.
@martinholde no im not talking about the previous comment. Me: "what im saying is its more improvised than you think." you: "No thats not what youre saying." right there you are trying to decide what i mean when i say something. therefore, you are putting false words im my mouth. youre right. this conversation is over.
@martinholde His other option would have been just to play the drum solo of YYZ, which is what many people want to hear anyway. He instead chose to use that solo as the core of this song and extend it with other sounds, so it's not just another iteration of the same YYZ song he's been playing for over 20 years, but an accumulation of techniques and solos he's picked up over the years. So to the rabid Rush fan, they get the most awesome parts of YYZ while hearing something new/different.
@Hyena1313 Fair enough. But, while I can appreciate that, musically, it isn't particullarly exciting to me though. Obviously, that's just my personal opinion, but I feel I have backed that up by reason earlier. In conclusion, thanks to you, Hyena1313, it is a solo meant for the true Rush fan.
@nothadnotbad Yeah, and it's nice to see a drummer who can actually come up with a solo that has musicality. A lot of drummers seem to think that a drum solo just means you do a bunch of complicated moves close together and call it a solo. A good example of a shitty sounding solo that's very difficult see "mike portnoy impossible drum solo"
I love Neil and have for over 25 years now, but I don't like this solo one bit. The theme on the marimba reminds me of a kids cartoon theme or something.
I think I'm among the minority of drummers who enjoyed the pre-Freddy Gruber style Neil Peart, with the old Tama kit and the slightly more "quantized" or "straight" feel. He's still a master, I just prefer the earlier work.
Always good to hear from those who're like-minded. I love Neil and he's brave for having re-invented his style to the degree he did. To me though, it's like "New Coke". Coke was just fine.
@larkydozer Yeah, to me it's like the band CAKE as well (I'm trusting you know them even if you're not a fan, being a knowledgable music guy). They were really awesome and then just tried to be too inventive with their songs instead of just making great CAKE songs.
I know that one single they had "he's going the distance... he's built for speed" and had recently heard a new Cake tune and I can hear what you're talking about.
@caprianders real? when you say "real" i hope you just mean acoustic because the drumming that takes place on the electronic kit is harder than it looks
HOW ?? the part after 3:30 mins .. like the hats in a different rhythm and a drum solo in another rhythm .. FUCKIN MASTER .. WHAT KIND OF SORCERY IS THIS ?!?!?

@TheJay1017 Travis Orbin, Peter Wildoer, Chris Coleman, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Marco Minneman, Steve Gadd and Gavin Harrison. Those guys are all technically superior and more innovative in my opinion. They are others of course. Neil Peart is a good drummer, but looking at this objectively, he is not the best.
@Eleutherarch And what, in your wisdom of objectivity, tells you that these drummers you mentioned are technically superior and more innovative than Peart?
@irena7777777 I'm not saying that Peart hasn't been innovative, but each of the guys I listed is technically superior in one way or another. Travis Orbin for instance has trained himself to be ambidextrous, and has an unbelievable command over polyrhythms, metric modulation and overall precision. Steve Gadd is the master of groove. Neil got much of his inspiration from the brain-melting chops of Buddy. Gavin Harrison is as versatile as it gets, whilst incorporating phenomenal dynamics.
@Eleutherarch I love Gavin Harrison but I would never say that he was better than Neil Peart. I think that your ego is allowing you to deem that who you prefer is best merely because you prefer them. I have no doubt the drummers you like are great, I just wouldn't be going around saying they're better than Peart because that's a huge statement to make considering how good Peart is.
@irena7777777 It's not my ego, it's just what I have seen personally of the two. Peart is great, I said that in my first comment. And said comment was directed at someone who was claiming that Neil was the best overall drummer. I found that to be contentious, so that's why I listed those guys.
I never tried to diminish Peart's achievements and technical skill. That would be wrong.
@irena7777777 How can you NOT say he's better than Peart? Neil Peart comes accross as an amateur compared to Minneman/Mangini/Harrison/Lang/Donati. A creative and musical amateur at that, but still...
@rexplorerii Shut up you complete fucking moron...Peart has more ability and drumming knowledge in a shaving off his pinky nail than you'd ever have so don't try come over all superior and pretentious, you condescending prick! Don't be all over Minneman because you watched the DT auditions!!
@irena7777777 HAHA, priceless. The f-word, moron, pretentious, prick, you got it all in there:-D Straight to ad hominem attack, no mention of drumming, doesn't exactly shout intellectual.
You know you haven't heard or seen me play, so you can't say anything about my ability or "drumming knowledge".
I dont even like Minneman, I heard of him maybe ten years before i saw the DT auditions though;-) There's so much more feel and skill in al those other guys playing, I stand by my above comment.
@rexplorerii And it smacks of pure intelligence to say Peart looks like an amateur compared to anyone. You may have drummers whom you prefer but no one makes Peart look like an amateur. That's plain stupid. It's subjective at the top level, really. I prefer Portnoy to Peart but would never state or even imply that he's the better drummer.
@irena7777777 Well, why wouldn't you? Are some kind of relativist, "everything is equall"... Judging on their tehcnical skill is not a subjective matter. All five of the guys I mentioned have a far wider or richer palette/vocabular. I admit that saying I llike that better, is a subjective matter, though. And my godness I didn't say Peart looks an amateur compared to anyone, I could mention a few who looks like an amateur compared to Peart... take care dude, peace :-DD
@kkamagwi ass hole... getty lee is the best bass player in the world has more talent in his fucking little finger than you have in your hole body the only one who has more talent than him is NEIL FUCKING PEART so fuck off douch bag
The fact he can play that much instruments at once (flawlessly!) is enough to earn him the status of one of the most influential musicians that has ever existed.
@TheLAVolunteer I've been playing the guitar for 18 years and I think Neil Peart is one of the best drummers in the world. I don't know why 119 people would dislike this video, but stereotyping guitarists as the reason is weak and improper.

Eleutherarch 1 week ago
@irena7777777 How can you NOT say he's better than Peart? Neil Peart comes accross as an amateur compared to Minneman/Mangini/Harrison/Lang/Donati. A creative and musical amateur at that, but still...
rexplorerii 1 week ago
@rexplorerii Shut up you complete fucking moron...Peart has more ability and drumming knowledge in a shaving off his pinky nail than you'd ever have so don't try come over all superior and pretentious, you condescending prick! Don't be all over Minneman because you watched the DT auditions!!
irena7777777 1 week ago
@irena7777777 HAHA, priceless. The f-word, moron, pretentious, prick, you got it all in there:-D Straight to ad hominem attack, no mention of drumming, doesn't exactly shout intellectual.
You know you haven't heard or seen me play, so you can't say anything about my ability or "drumming knowledge".
I dont even like Minneman, I heard of him maybe ten years before i saw the DT auditions though;-) There's so much more feel and skill in al those other guys playing, I stand by my above comment.
rexplorerii 1 week ago
@rexplorerii And it smacks of pure intelligence to say Peart looks like an amateur compared to anyone. You may have drummers whom you prefer but no one makes Peart look like an amateur. That's plain stupid. It's subjective at the top level, really. I prefer Portnoy to Peart but would never state or even imply that he's the better drummer.
irena7777777 1 week ago
@irena7777777 Well, why wouldn't you? Are some kind of relativist, "everything is equall"... Judging on their tehcnical skill is not a subjective matter. All five of the guys I mentioned have a far wider or richer palette/vocabular. I admit that saying I llike that better, is a subjective matter, though. And my godness I didn't say Peart looks an amateur compared to anyone, I could mention a few who looks like an amateur compared to Peart... take care dude, peace :-DD
rexplorerii 1 week ago
@rexplorerii Ditto...that's your opinion and you can't argue over opinions. Maybe you see things in a more technical sense than I do.

The fact he can play that much instruments at once (flawlessly!) is enough to earn him the status of one of the most influential musicians that has ever existed.

TheLAVolunteer 3 weeks ago
@TheLAVolunteer I've been playing the guitar for 18 years and I think Neil Peart is one of the best drummers in the world. I don't know why 119 people would dislike this video, but stereotyping guitarists as the reason is weak and improper.
