Yah, that's a tough one, but if it makes you feel any better, I thought the EXACT same thing the first time I tried to play it. I was like "what the fro is going on here? This isn't going to happen." But if you keep trying, your thumb will get used to that position.
I luvv the right hand technique. I'm able to play Neon since a few days, and thought I finally had it down. But now I've heard you.. I recon there's still a loong way to go xD
I had it installed at the music shop in Chicago where I bought the guitar. I would definitely recommend having it professionally done. It wasn't very expensive and it was done right. I wouldn't want to mess up a nice guitar just to save a few bucks, you know?
Very well done!! I've been working on this for awhile. Its kinda like stop this train, and heart of life.....it takes a long time to get sounding good. You done it justice. For the bridge did you put that together by ear or find a tab??
I play a harmonic on the 6th string and spin the tuning knob for that string (6th) down 3/4 of a turn so it's the same note as the 3rd fret of the 5th string.
if you google "neon tab" and then click on "images" on the top-left of the screen, the first picture (or one of the first pictures) is a hand-written tab for "neon" by john mayer himself. that helped me learn it.
awesome job dude.. you're right hand is crazy on point. If you get the chance, check out my cover on my channel. I'd love to hear some feedback! Keep up the playing
dude that little solo that you did after the bridge was awesome, ive learned how to play neon but im trying to make my own solo but its hard. im trying to make it sound good. ur inspired me to make a good one now
cool -- yeah i used some of what he did live/acoustic/solo for the breakdown. but i also love messing around in C minor pentatonic, both the 5th string 3rd fret and 6th string 8th fret locations. rip it up! let me know if you post something, I'll check it out.
Yep, you and asyal12 are correct. It's an OMJM. That's why I'm covering Neon. You can select up to 10 John Mayer songs for free when you buy the guitar, and you'll be able to play them. After that, there is a small fee per song.
big BIIIIG hands... @_@ wish i could play my neon with long fingers like those... then maybe i wouldnt have a hard time with the "i play the bass notes with my thumb" chords.. *sighzzors*
yeah, having big hands definitely helps. i grew up in the metal era and used to wish for smaller hands so i could shred faster. i guess there are pros and cons to both.
john mayer wrote out a tab for neon - he said "having GIANT thumbs help." google "neon tab john mayer images." it's one of the first pictures. white paper with handwritten music.
im tryin to learn how to play this and everytime i slap the strings i cant seem to get the same "pop" out of the strings as you and mayer and advice?...maybe the action is to high?
That could be it - the action. There are two different "slaps." The first note of the song is a C (6th string E dropped), and he hits that with his thumb, but he jumps off the string, so the note rings. Like playing slap bass. The other slap is a the clicking of the string against the highest fret, and is usually muted. so that could be it - just push down on your 6th string, and see if it touches the last fret you have (probably 21 or 22?). that's where you get the little click.
...or make a closed fist with your strum hand, and drop it across the strings (all 6) over the sound hole. drop it like dead weight, not like you're knocking on a door. a good way to get in the groove of that click is to make a loose fist, thumb down on the 6th string only. then drop the fist down lightly and get that "click." that will also stop the note from playing, and you can slowly work that up to a rhythm playing quarter note beats - thumb/click/thumb/click. that helped me.
Thanks so much - I appreciate it. I'm definitely a fan of John Mayer. He rips it. I had fun learning to play this song - and it's still a work in progress, for sure. Cheers~ :)
I always wondered why the first Neon cover has so many hits on YT... probably because it was the only one for a while, but still I'd have to say that this one is 10 times better... as mentioned before, that solo killed man! It's not often we see a good guitarplayer on YT, but you're definitely one of 'em!
Best rendition that I've heard on here. Much cleaner and smooth than most everyone. Nicely done

I play a harmonic on the 6th string and spin the tuning knob for that string (6th) down 3/4 of a turn so it's the same note as the 3rd fret of the 5th string.
