That wretched woman claimed to be on the side of small businesses. Well, our family business had survived and done quite well for over 40 years. It went under after less than 2 years of her. Why? Because the big supermarkets, encouraged by her policies, undercut us. Choice? Competition? Maybe. That didn't help us or the customers we'd had for years much though. She was all for the big guy. I think what suffered most was community. That's what she killed off, the community. She did nowt for us.

I think the heated debate here maybe illustrates what was wrong with her policies. Wherever her name comes up, this happens, at least where people from different backgrounds are able to debate. She took care of the well-off at the expense of the poor, and I've never seen any credible defense against this charge. That wretched woman claimed to be on the side of small businesses. Well, our family business had survived and done quite well for over 40 years. It went under after less than 2 years of her. Why? Because the big supermarkets, encouraged by her policies, undercut us. Choice? Competition? Maybe. That didn't help us or the customers we'd had for years much though. She was all for the big guy. I think what suffered most was community. That's what she killed off, the community. She did nowt for us.

I think the heated debate here maybe illustrates what was wrong with her policies. Wherever her name comes up, this happens, at least where people from different backgrounds are able to debate. She took care of the well-off at the expense of the poor, and I've never seen any credible defense against this charge. That's why the Conservatives still can't pick up votes in working class areas, where they need to pick them up if they're to win a majority. She messed it up for all who followed her.

Were John Major's policies or Tony Blair's policies really so different from Thatcher's? They have the luxury of inheriting a system she had already fixed through her transitional years, which were painful for some.
Thatcher made the poor well off, and that is how she took care of them. She offered opportunities and incentives to get ahead.

Have you heard of the brain drain? Does it concern you? I recall that some UK universities refused to carry periodicals that listed jobs in the USA.
If people can't make money in the UK but can elsewhere, there is the temptation to leave. Is that what you want?

She's entitled to her view, but my own memories of the Thatcher years are particularly dark ones. I think her relationship with Reagan worried a lot of people, because he wasn't, well, the sharpest tool in the shed, was he? Seriously though, she did divide the country. The 'haves' love her, and the 'have nots' hate her with equal and opposite venom. In that way, she can't ever be seen in the same way as, say, Churchill, whose leadership defeated Nazism. You are. I can tell you with the benefit of a New Zealand perspective: we're much smaller, and we introduced reforms called Rogernomics in the 1980s. It's a political bogeyman to bring up these reforms but they've made our country competitive.
We used to have farm subsidies and a government stores board and ministry of works; people used to say "I came to New Zealand in the weekend, but it was closed."

Reagan and Thatcher's role in ending the Cold War are blown up out of proportion. Gorbachev's policies that led to the unraveling of the Soviet Union and its satellites were much more important to ending communism than Reagan. Reagan in fact escalated the Cold War in the early 80's.

I agree about Harold Wilson also. I disagree fundamentally with his economic policies (he being from the Labour party) but in many ways, especially with regard to social reforms, he was a good Prime Minister.
