One of the most remarkable movies I've ever seen. Fascinating that that the guy who is quiet and gets the crap beaten out of him by a more powerful inmate is actually looked upon as their leader.

The characters are so rich and complex, you have to see this movie many times to appreciate it's brilliance.

As a child, I was fortunate to be living about a mile from where they built this jail facility for the movie, in Stockton, California. We rode our bicycles there numerous times and watched them filming several scenes. I was able to get Paul Newman and George Kennedy's autographs while there. Greatest movie.
