I think the best thing about this performance is Colm Wilkinson's low last note. Usually when others do it, the note is sort of gentle. But here, he really attacks it. It gives me chills!
Good luck. This is the best Sydmonton video of MotN I've found. I'm sure ALW has the complete thing, but none of it is available in the R.U.G. videos.
Hind sight is perfect, but thank goodness that Colm was committed to Les Mis and couldn't be in the show (he was much better in Les Mis) and they changed the lyrics.
Are you saying this after this excerpt, or did you see the whole thing ? Because here there isn't enough time to decide wether he does good or not ^__^"
No, I didn't "see the whole thing." You have to be a personal friend of ALW to be invited to Sydmonton, and I've never seen/heard clips longer than this one...BUT...I don't like what I hear in this clip, and I've heard Colm sing things I like much better, especially Les Mis. My opinion.
The comment isn't completely inappropriate. Why do you think they changed that lyric? mslairol isn't the only one who might be thinking what she was thinking. I've read similar comments in other discussions of the differences between the Sydmonton lyrics and the ones that we know from the show.
Yes, this is Colm. He did the workshop version of Phantom at Andrew Lloyd Webber's theatre in Sydmonton, England. It was in 1985, and just the first act. Colm couldn't do the role because of his contractual obligation to Les Miserables. That's when Michael Crawford came in ... :o)
Colm went on to star as the original Toronto Phantom, from Sept 12/89 (when previews started; official opening Sept 20/89) to his last performance on May 12/94. We got to know him both onstage and backstage, and had box seats for his final performance!!
Really? Because if you watch Richard Stilgoe who wrote these lyrics, he said that he was actually embarrassed by a lot of the songs that he wrote for the musical and that he felt deep guilt over what he had written.
i now have the full song. check it out

Okay...
I still think it's too short and the sound is too distorted to form an opinion, though...
I'll try to find another video somewhere ! ; )

Dumbass. If you can't make an appropiate comment then don't make one at all.

I've never really cared for Colm Wilkinson as the Phantom, but for some reason I love this clip...

This clip is amazing.
I like these lyrics A LOT more then the lyrics put into the play.
I would love to find lyrics for the whole original song of this version.

It's pretty easy. I can't give you any links due to youtube's rules, but all you have to do is google Music of the Night.
