I incorporate both dumbbell flyes and pec deck machine. It is good to add machine exercises to your workout. this guy is just a tool and full of himself saying," yeah im 6'6... blah blah."
Actually fuck the pecdec and cross overs, dumbell flys so on and so on...... Do dumbell pressess for better stretch and developement of stabilizer muscles and hit the parallel dip racks. Dips are the all to often forgotten chest excersise that unlike bench presses which cause problems with the shoulders because the flat bench isolates the scapulas from full range of motion. Fuck man ! All you weight lifting junkies should know this shit!!!
You failed to mention tech in the whole video. I see a lot of people even "big" guys work the pec deck and all do short motion range... You work that deck with a FULL motion range then its a different story and the weight you can do decreases and the benefit you gain increases ... Im tall and I go through a varied routine which sometimes includes the pec deck and doing it correctly isnt fast like you say... Im sorry but you are miss informing people here ... Do it right or go home!
i dont want a body anywhere near what that guys looked like at the beginning so im not listening to this shit.. he looks terrible, the peck deck is an awesome machine for ending a work out if you dont want to fucking tear a rotator cuff and if you basically don't have the strength to continue holding weights in your hands also this is the same thing as doing cable flyes.. this video's fucking stupid
@AAHH94 you are joking right? Bitch fly's are THE excerisise to do if you wanna tear a rotator cuff! It is the WORST movement for your shoulders! it will fuck you up son! trust me
I agree ,dumbbell flyes work better. But if your doing rehab or play defense on football then do peck deck.Ive seen your workouts and you always work light
pec deck is easy progression because of the mechanics of it. most of the machines its a LOT of weight but even when you do a full rep its not moving the weight much. think about fly's...say your using 30s. you are moving in total 60 pounds about 10 feet total. now on a pec deck you can move 180 but you really are only moving the weight stack about 4 feet.
ok for pure muscle size compared to other chest exercises for sure. But its not terrible for you. You can still get growth from it, its just not as efficient.
Peck deck just makes u feel better and makes u think ur stronger which is helpful. He is right about peck deck but come on uve got 2 b an idiot to say pushups dnt help
pec deck is for pretty boys not the hard core lifter, unless your a pro body builder incline barbell press, Arnold one of the best chest in body building high rep dumbbell flyes
I would have to agree with you PEC DECK is one of the worse exercise to do. I would never recommend a client to do a pec deck. As a personal trainer I have seen most injuries from Pec deck than any other exercise in the gym. And most of those are in the shoulder girdle, not the chest. there is better exercise for the chest like Fly
The pec deck and dumbbell flyes can easily be replaced by window washer push-ups or flye push-ups, medicine ball push-ups, or high cable flyes that are basically the iron cross in gymnastics. Any movement that is limited to a matter of inches like burn-outs is basically useless in everyday living. When can't do a full rep, get assistance and complete the full rep.
....talk to navy seals (and any other branch of the military for that matter) who do push ups all day everyday and then tell me that pushups don't give you any weight. you're really dam arrogant...
Well this is my chest workout just as an example. 5 sets barbell bench press, 5 sets incline barbell press, 5 sets flat bench press, 5 sets incline bench press, 5 sets chest flyes, then 3 sets weighted dips to finish. But keep in mind I'll mix things up when I become adjusted to keep growing. This routine shouldn't be used by beginners, but if you do cut your sets down to 3. And remember to work the muscle, not the weights.
First I'd like to say I'm in total agreement this dude totally knows what he's talking about. I've been lifting weights since i was 14 (23 now) I mix it up by pyramid, positives and negatives and drop sets and the pec deck hasn't come close to any of those types of workouts. But that's just my opinion.
I reached a plateau with my bench press and decided to use the Pec deck to "shock" my muscles into new growth (I lift for strength, not mass). My chest was sore for days after, which really *was* shocking!!! Didn't expect that lol. But if the pec deck is out of the question then what else? Really heavy dumbbell Flyes are impossible, I can't put enough weight onto my lap when sitting to transition to laying down (if you see what I mean) - I train by myself so a spotter is out.
ok so is your only reason for hating the pec deck because of its mechanical inefficiency, i.e. weight on the stack not being as much as you are pressing together? if not, give the concrete reasons, all i could seem to hear is that you say its bad and trying to swat away some guy who is bragging to you about his big pecs.....
In my opinion, a pec deck is a decent exercise if you use it on occasion. It's basically an exercise that'll throw your muscles off when you're looking for improvements. But you are right though, definitely not an exercise to be used on the regular.
I use a finisher in my chest workout just like I do with my other muscle groups for the stretch and the concentration on the contraction of the muscle. It's not something I do every time I workout, but it does help with muscle growth and strength. I don't use a lot of weights when i do the exercise, most of the time I only do 2 sets for the exercise, but I'm doing anywhere between 15-25 reps for each set. Now with that said, I'll continue watching the rest of the video :)
Doing a fifth set/exercise is counterproductive so is a fourth and a third and a second. 1 is all you need any more is not only useless but will use up energy that could have been used for recovery and growth. Look up Mike Mentzer High Intensity Training. Most Highly Educated Response Ever Award for me.
@BrokenBrilliance Mike Mentzer who won a Mr Universe with a perfect score of 300 used High Intensity Training. He recommends in his book 'High Intensity Training The Mike Mentzer Way' To use one set of squats or leg press during a consolidated program. If you're doing squats right, not using momentum and not gving up when it gets too hard like a lot of guys do you'd realize its enough. More isn't better, precise and harder is better.
Yes there are poorly designed pec decks that you feel in your shoulder. Use one that doesn't rotate the shoulder upwards i.e Nautilus Nitro, Nautilus 10 degree chest or life fitness reardelt/pec fly. Using a pec deck as a finisher is stupid, but it has it's place as a pre exaust if superseted with a pressing movement...
The reason you can do the stack is because all pec deck machines don't offer fully effective resistance. This means due to their engineering the length of the arm you are pushing from is longer than the arm or cam the resistance is being pulled from i.e leverage advantage. 200lbs on the stack is not 200lbs in the movement arm or pad. Free weight offer fully effective resistance vertically. 200lbs on a bar if its moving directly either up or down is 200 direct lbs...
yea i thought the "pec dec" was for your chest but i always feel like my shoulders are getting killed rather than my pectoralis major, which is what its for right?
Jimmy first I totally agree on the pec deck they never did any thing for me, however I diagree on push-ups they have done wonders for me,and I don't do just one kind, my chest has started to develop nicely, but I am having a problem getting the upper chest to develop as good as the rest. I can't do any kind of bench press because of a major shoulder reconstruction 3 years ago so if you have any advice to help it would be great. Btw I do use heavy rest. bands and weighted dips.
@BossJ24 I do not. Yes the flyes are the same motion as the pec deck but it's not a machine so you have to stabilize the weight which changes things. Also, you can play with the angles which allows you to hit different pec fibers. I see guys talking online about how they use 80 pounds on chest flyes but their form must be awful.
i disagree, because i use the pec deck after my chest workout to just get those last reps in and really fatigue my chest and for doing that i dont use the whole stack and, if u say that ur using thatfor your main exercise yes i would say thats dumb and suggest dumbell chest presses (which is my main) or incline and flat barbell bench press.
@colonshaguar Did you actually watch the whole video? You know the part where I talk about how using it to "fatigue those last fibers" is completely incorrect?
@jimmysmithtraining to be honest i didnt watch the whole vid before i commented. but i went back and u didnt give any opposing points to not do the pec dec as a workout finisher. my idea about it is that i want to get the most out of my workout and if after doing flat bench dumbbell press and incline bench i would like another exercise to work out my pecs and yes i know i could do flys but ive never done them and i am increasing weight at a reasonable pace, so i dont see any need to change.
im neautral on the topic. I rarely touch any machines and rather pick up a dumbell or bar. The only time I use a machine is when theres 20 people hanging around the bench's and I don' t want to wait.
I find the pec deck challenging though and only do about 130lbs for 3-4 sets and I weigh 145lbs.
I think that you should do a video on steroids for teenagers. It's just one of those things I would like your insight on. ( If you already have a video I can't find it )
@jimmysmithtraining hey, i have a question for you. if its my chest and tri's day and for chest i do flat olympic bar, 4 sets of 8 going from 135 for the frist set, then 155 for the other 3. on the last set i am only able to pump out 5 or so reps. then i do incline and decline free weights 3 sets of each 8 reps. i do tri's after chest because they are the supporters for chest. the thing is that i am usually sore for the next 3 days. i stretch my chest b4 and after. any tips?
I hear exactly what you're saying dude. Even though the peck deck my pinch your chest no one can honestly say that by then end of their peck deck set that their arms are not burning. Myself personally i fell the peck deck in my biceps and shoulders more than chest.
hey jimmy love your vids and your opinions. im not using the pec deck anymore, but i did because i wanted get my mass in my inner pec region. now im just focusing on presses and flies. would the pec deck help add mass to my inner pecs or no? and would close grip bench press be the best then for building inner pecs? what would you recommend for good inner pec exercises? thanks in advance, hope you get to my question.
@gibbyboy66 inner pecs just develop as you develop your chest entirely. you can't shape your chest. it's just genetics. just make it bigger and it will shape itself.
@jimmysmithtraining alright i start doing that, thanks a lot jimmy! your videos and advice really help out. i stopped using wrist straps too and it is working wonders for my grip, and i dont notice any difference at all when i do back exercises.
I have used the peck deck a few times... I find that it works, but you have to be very careful how you use it. I see people use it all the time but their arms aren't straight and their elbows never come close to each other. i find that when your arms are straight and your elbows come close together the peck deck can be effective. but it also hurts my joints so I try to do more DB Flys or Cable Cross overs. if I can't get to one of those I will peck deck
I have never touched a pec deck. Whenever I see it in a workout I just ignore it or move in a DB fly instead since it actually hits my chest and I feel is a bit more functional. Now I normally stick to compound movements in general instead of compounds, which also leads me to never do finishing moves. Overtraining is easy to do and if you just benched heavy in all your exercises you shouldn't need a finisher move to get more blood into the area. DOing more reps doesn't mean better progress.
