Wonderful video. You really know about this S.O. Nice installation's explanation. Thanks, and keep on posting. Im a Ubuntu's user as well, and the only 'problem' with it is about 'how to play some games from Microsoft'. The rest is ok runing on it. Thank you very much.
What if I install this OS on my main drive will it wipe out the files that I have on my recovery disk drive too? I was about to format all the the files on my main drive because I wanted to use ubuntu. But the problem is I wasn't sure if it's gonna delete my recovery partition files too! pleasse answer me soon!

@hippyslovepot well obviously Mr. Hippy i was looking for a better vid, and i stumble on this one by accident that is why i watched it. and for ur second immature word "illiterate child" i will have to say GROW UP! i have my reasons not to like this vid, and you have urs for liking it, so lets just stick with ours, and not interfere with others business.

I hope everyone switches to Linux so that Microshit can lose customers and money, they're nothing but a corrupt company that's only interested in money, it's something how idiots like steve ballmer bashes open source and Linux and praises Windows and Microsoft. Hi, I have a external usb HDD which I use as a backup of my windows 7 pc. Now I want to install ubuntu 9.10 on it without losing the data and also have access to the files from within windows 7 AND ubuntu. How do I do that?
@dovaje - USB data transfer speeds are slower than IDE or esata connections. If you want to run any OS off an external, you should should run it from an esata capable external. USB externals were meant for data backup and storage, not for OS's.
Hey Nixie, have you ever had your laptop battery run out while your installing updates...it doesn't like it at all. I had to re-install Ubuntu 9.10. Have you ever had this happen?
@philmiller99 When you install updates, it's recommended and a very good idea to plug in you AC/Adaptor, that way you can install it with no problems.
this is the first ubuntu tutorial ive seen that showed a person who is ACTUALLY pleasent to the eye. most video's have some kid under 16 or some guy over 30 doing it.
@DavidJasonSoto Nope, well yeah you could but it's not recommended.
The swap file makes your system do file / directory actions superfast (if you copy a file from folder A to folder B, it will be inmediantly copied and accesable, but what u don't see is that the swap area is slowly copying it).
Also never shut down ur pc by holding the button if running linux, it's really bad for the system cuz the swap area might contain files u needed, and swap = empty if power = off :P
I see, thanks man! Can i get your email for future reference? ...also I heard you are supposed to make your swap double the amount of your RAM, is that true or 2 GB. is perfect.
I run Ubuntu on an e-sata external using Thermaltakes BLACX docking station. Only have to switch drives in the BIOS when I want to switch back and forth between OS's. Keeps my Windows drive with space and allows me to learn Linux and play around with it on my own time without committing my system to having GRUB take over the booting.
My Windows 7 RC has ran out and will only run for 2 hours then shut off. I do not want to spend $200.00 on Window 7 Home right now. I see I can download a 32 Bit of Ubuntu but what about the 64 Bit? I am running a AMD Phenom ll 550 Black Edition. When I try searching for a 64 bit download all I get is 32 bit. Any ideas where I get 64? Also is this software compatiable with Nero 7 Ultra, I-tunes ect?
Yes Ubuntu is a good distro and yes you are HOT, but however i'm sad to say that I left Ubuntu for openSUSE 11.2 KDE. To be honest openSUSE is and awsome distro very stable and it runs so smooth on both of my machines! Oh yeah openSUSE is an extremely easy distro to learn with the one-click install and huge community repositories.
ill stick to linux mint, i went from 3 to 4 crashed with all the headachs inbetween to not having a single crash in a year ..............god i hate windows
Left click your network connection icon on the desktop and you shall see if your network card or wireless device is recognized. If it is a wifi insert the password and u will be connected to the internet. If it is ethernet just click on it and u will be connected to the internet
if you have windows, go to CP, system administrator, manage hard drive, shrink C:\, make new partitino (right click free space or unaccoloated space), fill in info, chose ntfs (i think), TADA! this isnt word for word, i have 7 so i just search 'partition' in start menu and im done
FUCK UBUNTU..worst shit i ever install in my pc..be warned it can fuck up your pc...i guess people want to Downgrade and become cavemen? and oh yeah this bitch is fat...she should eat that CD
hey whats up guys, i have ubuntu 9.04 and when i tried to update to 9.04 my wireless ddnt work. is there a file or driver that i can download thew synaptic to get my wireless to work?
its the root partition thats where the os files and aditional software will go to. if you install a lot of software make sure this one is big enough. I usually go the other way around (choose a couple of gigs for /home and then leave all the rest to / )
normally also I would use a small (300MB) ext2 partition for /boot
@nixie you should really also tell what to do if there is no free space available when partitioning wich is the case for most pure windowsers
Until I used a flash drive on ubuntu,I tossed every early distro in the trash because it didnt work. I tried 6 distros and finally found one distro that worked.
I currently have Vista but I now get an error message when I try to log on saying that my user profile couldn't be loaded or found or something. I tried System Restore but it failed. I'm not very familiar with Ubuntu or Linux. I don't want to pay for a new copy of Windows right now. Would downloading and using the new version of Ubuntu be practical for me in my situation? Would it be very difficult for me to get used to after using pretty much only Windows Operating Systems?
I did a net install, which wasn't nearly as graphical. One problem I'm having is I'd like to move the swap-file to somewhere other than the last 500 mb on this 20 gb laptop hard drive. Talk about slow...
Nice vid Nixie Buscuits. I'm a wimp when it comes to those settings.
I use Easus Partition Master in Windows 7 to open some space up. Like 30 gig UNFORMATTED. I only give it a drive letter. "K" for Kubuntu. Then I reboot with Kubuntu disk and tell it to use available free space. Done. Installing inside windows works but I run 64bit and live install only does 32 bit. But thanks for the vid because I need some coaching there. Props.
But honestly I'm quite pessimistic about it. I recently reinstalled Ubuntu completely, since I bought a new PC :P. The problem never went away, but I'll try :D.
when i installed some stuff, he restarted and since than i got some message about how he can open /dev/mem. do you maybe know what is it and how to solve it? please reply som1
a GB is still 1024MB, it always has been and it always will be its the harddrive vendors that ignore this fact and use 1000 MB for a GB to sell more drives, GiB is nothing more then a communication tool.
its to make clear where talking about REAL GB's and not fakes.
What I continue to find hilarious is that Linux can see and read any partition that may be on your computer, but Windows cannot read, let alone access, your Linux partitions.
KDE is more beautiful but Gnome is very editable and a lot more stable than KDE. And Gnome Partition Manager Works just great, with KDE I have a lot of problems, he don't dettect correctly.
after some recent updates my computer doesn't start normally !
it shows message :
GNU GRUB version 1.97~beta4
[Minimal BASH-like editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device/file completions.]
i have a question. When i do the install without any changes can i download any software or change the graphics while im in the test ubuntu, cuz i cant. Is this normal or does it mean that it wont run properly and can i boot back to windows when i install it?
For anyone that only wishes to try out Ubuntu, but doesn't wish to make partitions, I really recommend virtualizing the OS using Virtualbox. I've tried many Linux Distros like this. If you like the OS then you can make a clean install.
Virtualizing the OS means you access it from your main OS as if it was an application. Give it a try.
I have had so many problems with Karmic Koala, that I was forced to go back to Windows 7. I along with many other people have had problems with media folders freezing, even if they only have 1 file in them! The only way around it is to disable thumbnails, which is extremely annoying when looking for pictures quickly. Plus my $300 webcam has stopped working with the new update.

True thing I'm studying IT and there are 2 girls out of a total of 70 people. But it's just not the same, this girl is interested and smart. The girls in my school are probably not going to make next year and I overheard one girl say, I hate that we don't use windows here :( (they use ubuntu in my school as well). So no, it's not the same lol :(
I'm surprised they use Ubuntu in a school Microsoft's immoral business practices practically force windows down the throat of Schools. The idea is if kids use Windows at school, they'll want to use it at home, and basically Microsoft has sold it's OS to them for life.
Well it's more like college, i had 2 years of IT in high school as well, the first year we used windows xp, the hardware was pretty old, I think it were celerons so not fast at all, the second year we had an upgrade of hardware, and they installed windows vista. And in college we finally use ubuntu. It's on the pcs as a base os, we don't use it, we use 2 vmware images, ubuntu and windows 7, but barely use windows 7, i use windows 3.1 for assember because it works and doesn't crash really.
Free space - does that mean un-partitioned or just free space within the NTFS partition? I think most people who install windows will not have any un-partitioned space left on their hard disk.

I did a net install, which wasn't nearly as graphical. One problem I'm having is I'd like to move the swap-file to somewhere other than the last 500 mb on this 20 gb laptop hard drive. Talk about slow...

Do Not share a /home partition with any other distro!
Best to just make a DataXY partition, mount it under /mnt, and dump anything yours to that.

Props.

Watching this on 9.10, I really like Ubuntu, nice OS and all.. but what is the frwaking problem with firefox on it?
It won't let me click on HD and most of the time non of the buttons or the searchbar actually seem to recognize the input by the mouse.
In general Firefox seems to have big problems with online video players.
Nice tits btw.
Hades2004 2 years ago
@Hades2004 - you need to reinstall the flash player addon for firefox. I had the same problem in firefox under windows.
brotaque 2 years ago
@brotaque Thanks for the tip, will try it :).
But honestly I'm quite pessimistic about it. I recently reinstalled Ubuntu completely, since I bought a new PC :P. The problem never went away, but I'll try :D.

Be sure to include delete every instance of Pulseaudio because its the worst thing since the Ultimate Chopper.
Also, if you're using a lower version of Ubuntu you can upgrade using the Update Manager if you're lazy.
Also, Dual boot Windows on Linux, not Linux on Windows ;D

10 GB = 10240 MB
mhnassif 2 years ago 3
wrong... 10 GB are equal to 10000 MB, 10 GiB are 10240. BG (Gigabyte) and GiB (Gibibyte) are different things.
BluesMan4ty5 2 years ago
"GB (Gigabyte)" I mean.
BluesMan4ty5 2 years ago
a GB is still 1024MB, it always has been and it always will be its the harddrive vendors that ignore this fact and use 1000 MB for a GB to sell more drives, GiB is nothing more then a communication tool.
its to make clear where talking about REAL GB's and not fakes.
So yes a 1GB is 1024MB.
if you don't believe me convert it using google.
deathZor42 1 year ago
yeah, lots of companies say that. they say 160 gb it comes with <160000mb you end up with about 155gb

What I continue to find hilarious is that Linux can see and read any partition that may be on your computer, but Windows cannot read, let alone access, your Linux partitions.

i have a question. When i do the install without any changes can i download any software or change the graphics while im in the test ubuntu, cuz i cant. Is this normal or does it mean that it wont run properly and can i boot back to windows when i install it?
ildunari 2 years ago

So no, it's not the same lol :(
This world is unfair.
maroon5rule 2 years ago
I'm surprised they use Ubuntu in a school Microsoft's immoral business practices practically force windows down the throat of Schools. The idea is if kids use Windows at school, they'll want to use it at home, and basically Microsoft has sold it's OS to them for life.
anewman1980 2 years ago
Well it's more like college, i had 2 years of IT in high school as well, the first year we used windows xp, the hardware was pretty old, I think it were celerons so not fast at all, the second year we had an upgrade of hardware, and they installed windows vista. And in college we finally use ubuntu. It's on the pcs as a base os, we don't use it, we use 2 vmware images, ubuntu and windows 7, but barely use windows 7, i use windows 3.1 for assember because it works and doesn't crash really.

Free space - does that mean un-partitioned or just free space within the NTFS partition? I think most people who install windows will not have any un-partitioned space left on their hard disk.
anewman1980 2 years ago
it means unpartitioned space, but partitioner can make NTFS partitions smaller to make some space to Linux.
