Firstly : Kate's song is her own creation ,not "A version " It belongs in an album which has been revered as one of greatest albums ever written , yes by Ms Bush . I think it is special that older classics are revamped and brought to the table by a younger generation and is colored by their own particular sound . Secondly , However this rendition ,to me tends to squirm in neurosis and self pity ,When it is an optimistic song about understanding through God in an impatient [running ] manner .
I like their version, and Within Temptation's version.. But I've heard Within Temptation's version more so this sounds so beautiful since i'm not as used to it... But Within Temptation is still awesome too. I think you all should look up Within Temptation's other songs!
At first I didn't mind this cover. Lately, however, I've come to realize that it's whiny, pretentious, and only appeals to emo teenagers. If you're over the age of early 20's with even a slight grasp of real life, this version is pretty silly. The audience shots say it all. Still, I see the appeal for the song's intended audience.
@kroft67 actually im above 20 with a grasp on real life, its the emotion portrayed that people can relate too, if you don't relate to it then that is you choice.
Hey peeps, not a fan of "shameless puns" but seems it's a must to spread yourself today. I used to listen to Placebo quite a bit back in the day...
I listened to a bit recently, and it wasn't really sticking.... I was like wow he sounds whiney, etc...
Hearing this though.... Brings back my whole reasoning for thinking placebo is amazing.... Hearing the emotion through Brian... And the whole ambiance that the band maintains....
Both versions of this song are great, I like the orignial, its one i like to hear on the radio in the car. But this, this is an experience, this is something I want to feel. This is darker, this makes deals with places god cant touch...
I love both versions of this song. Of course, generally speaking, the original always supercedes, but in this case, Placebo is exceptional. And I am compelled to say that Brian Molko is very eccentric and attractive..damn he's hot ;)
I love both versions of this song. Of course, generally speaking, the original always supercedes, but in this case, Place is exceptional. And I am compelled to say that Brian Molko is very eccentric and attractive..damn he's hot ;)
Honestly, i can't understand the meaning of the song in Placebo's version.
For me not enough beat, not enough drive, not enough explosion that the meaning originally implied. Heroine like sensations in the sound itself... do not transcend to another level, are not revealing nothing new, give no forces to live or deeper understand what we are living for. Kate made deal with god, not Placebo. Remake of a prophecy is hardly possible.
i like both this and kates version, but get more feelings and emotions from kates,i find that videos to go with the songs invoke more feelings but with kates, with or without the video, still the same feelings,im only 28 and really love her music, but its not acceptable to listen to it in this day n age without getting dirty looks so its good when new bands do covers of the old ones so we can still listen to em and still be kinda "cool"
@Psyroh This song is presented to a generation in a way that this generation understands. Placebo does it in such a dark, building style. When I, someone who never listened to Kate's music, go watch the video for the original version of this song, it sounds ridiculous. Not bad, really, but just so off-the-wall and different that it doesn't sound REAL. I understand that hers is the original, but Placebo's gives you that feeling that's hard to understand with Kate's version.
im a 80s person , and love kate bush ,but i must say i do like placebo to !!!!!!!!!! you know kate ,only you cold bring me here to listen to it ,give it to placebo ,they brought it back to life again
If it hadn't been for Placebo covering this song, I would have never given Kate Bush a second try, and realized that I had grown into her! So thanks Placebo, and I think both of them are doing what artists do and that is interpreting what something means to them personally!
My guess is that the Kate fans who don't like this aren't upset with it being covered. But with the layers of subtext this performance gives it. Kinda like how people were creeped out when Coil covered Tainted Love all those years ago. The video brought out their meaning loud and clear. Don't just Katie's fans too harshly. Be kind to their mistakes.
Have you tried Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill (Datassette Remix), guys? Keeps the spirit of the original. And Kate Bush did not shit in her pants while singing.
@davepenk1066 "Some idiot"? It's one thing to insult Brian's vocal style and a whole other thing to personally attack him. No one said you had to like it, but he is in no way an idiot just because his voice doesn't appeal to you.
There is of course a meaning to this song which will relate to everyone in so many ways. To me it reminds me that god is only two ends of a cunt. Don't ever make a deal.
Christ Allmighty, what a heap of shitty, headache inducing crap...the kind of 'band' I detest---''Daddy,daddy,you're an investment banker, can I have a few thousand pounds please,I've decided I want to be in a band and be a rock star! If you don't then girls or anybody else won't be able to appreciate me and my obvious genius!''
Total embarassing shite.
Don't listen to this if you love Kate Bush,it'll make you physically ill.
@stranglerkitty007 I'm not one to start a fight on the internet, but Placebo [whether they are really as you portray them to be or not] is a fine group. They took Kate Bush's song, and turned it depressing. This isn't the studio version, I think, but at least give some credit for their way of changing the song around, whether it's shit or not. And I'm not really looking for a debate, but that you've listened, and at least acknowledged them as an artist.
@LilKama1 No 'fight' here mate,of course it's only my opinion but even you acknowledge it's shite.Ok,I'll give you the Molko approach to music...''I'm a very musically/intellectually limited tosspot but if I throw a bit make-up on and sound depressed then certain types of weak minded simpletons (Kevin on Harry Enfield?) will imagine I'm dark, mysterious and misunderstood-a poor lost soul-Bingo!''
Forget this whinging, boring as fuck imposter, try The Stranglers and wake up..music's for pleasure!
If you want a crap cover of this song though, check out Within Temptation's cover, because if there's one crap cover of this song it isn't Placebo's. I do like Within Temptation though, just that one is by far the most horrific.
There's more to a song than the damn vocals. Sure, Brian's voice takes some getting used to for some people ( Placebo had to grow on my dad, but he likes them now in addition to having liked Kate Bush). But jjh2456 words it perfectly. Placebo's version is exactly that, haunting. My favourite part is the arrangement, not the vocals, though I do love Brian's voice. It's purely the eerie and emotional music behind it. You can't beat the original, but it comes pretty damn close.
I like the way they changed the music, I'm an old kate Bush fan, but I can't get past the singers voice. He ruins the song, like a cross between the lead singer of REM and a petulant teenage girl speaking to her friends.
@09thenicholas We should see who will remember Placebo in 30 years. Time only shows the real meaning. I think somehow relatively great performers should perform together, otherwise it's a profanation.
I totally disagree. His voice has not done Kate Bush any justice at all. His voice taken all the emotion that was in this song and chucked it to the side. It sounds empty. Very disappointed with this.
I like all 3 covers of this song, But Kate wrote and produced it for an album that was way ahead of its time. The Hounds of Love is one of the great albums of the 80's. The B side, The Ninth Wave is art that pulls u gently in, then drags u kicking and screaming through he experience. it's better live! i like this version better than kate bush, but if she never wrote this song the version of placebo wouldn't exist eather! i'am so happy that i find this song!
I first heard this song on the radio (as I don't really like the "music" that's out these days, but rather I prefer the eighties) a few days ago. I was in awe and immediately fell in love with this brilliant version of Kate Bush's classic. What an exceptional cover song.

I first heard this song on the radio (as I don't really like the "music" that's out these days, but rather I prefer the eighties) a few days ago. I was in awe and immediately fell in love with this brilliant version of Kate Bush's classic. What an exceptional cover song.
