Yes, it is "smurfs", no doubt, just listen. The "f" sound is very apparent.

I suppose that maybe they orginially though about rhyming "they don't have to work" with "30 foot smirk(s)", but found out that "30 foot smurfs" would be a lot funnier.

I love how they used instruments for LESS (supposedly) than they were designed for. I was an Alt-Rocker (grungehead) at the time and a band that had all of their stringed instruments with fewer strings than they were made for, in different tuning than were accepted...genius...or sheer f@&k you.
