more folks should do this...as they say nowadays, Email is "so 20th century!" And yet, for many of us "youngsters" (I'm nearing 59), it's our primary means of online contact. Watching these videos makes me think that technology is passing me by -- and I need to work a bit to catch myself up to it!
Great stuff. It's nice to see the elderly using computers. Kind of makes me wonder what lies ahead when I am retired and trying to keep up with the world! It is a little scary! LOL! Nice work Sir!
(continued from below)Here's a thought maybe we should vote to change the rules of warfare and if the polititians want to fight another nation, LET THEM just don't bring the people into it we would rather talk to each other, and if they carn't do the same VOTE THEM OUT because that is a measure of failure. Well done for making these, I look forward to seeing interviews with people from other parts of the village too.
A joy to watch positive people, love the global village. when the polititians realise, as these people do, that the people now talk to each other, maybe just maybe they will stop sending our young people to fight each other. (continues above)
fantastic! Peter will live for a very long time, because he has a desire to acquire more knowledge and understanding, and good for him! he's keeping his brain active... fantastic! i wish a lot more of the elderly would at least attempt to develop IT skills, it will motivate them.
wow i really am pleased at what you are doing sharing the get joys of internet with older people.its cool that my grandad & grandma can talk to me via internet even thou they are on the other side of the world. it really brings their spirits up when they see me and the family.
I think what you are doing to encourage silver surfers is wonderful. I tried to interest my father in computers, simply because it would have been so convenient and reassuring to see his face on webcam each day, to know that he was managing OK (he discovered he had cancer about a year before he died). Alas, he just didn't want to know about it. Senior citizen reading this on family's computer? Try it! Get your groceries delivered in winter, like the old days - via a website! Go on! Try! :)
wow this was really interesting! I think it's great to find out about people who've discovered our technology relatively recently, and to see what they think of it, it's not something i've ever really been able to understand, having been brought up with computers, its become second nature.
Funnily enough my grandfather flew B-17's in WW2,but the thoughts of sending emails, even turning a computer on sends shivers down his spine.Perhaps someday I can coax him into sharing his stories on youtube.
I'm really happy the elderly are familiarising themselves with computers.Really it boils down to the unknown but once you get over that a whole new world opens up.We the younger generation can greatly benefit from the previous generation.Sadly a lot of them are wasting away in old folks homes and rejected by society.
Brilliant Idea! It's v.good to see older people on the comps.
I remember when I first showed my Grandma' Skype, she was so-amazed that she could now see me in brilliant quality, and I could see her! Since we did this, we don't use the phone anymore!!
Hello, this is Granni001. I thank you for your kind words, and agree that this is a wonderful idea. A senior may listen to another senior who has been in their shoes. Peter is amazing, and has a wonderful opportunity to help so many others, and does so freely. I just wish I could have had my hair done - and perhaps a face lift? If I ever do this again - at least I'll get the hair cut!
I do hope Peter continues with this series. It's a fabulous idea!! Congratulation Peter and Mike!!
this is such a great video to introduce other silver surfers to the computer. and i just love the little lady!!!! i loved the thought of how games helped her to lose her fear of the computer. great way to introduce people to something new. you so awesome to do all of this... hugs from yayajuke
if only i could get my grand parents, they would love finding things out! ..i remember the first time she went onto the computer she strugled with the mouse too -although i suppose because im used to it, but im not sure why? i think she said it goes the opposite direction you'd expect but..? :)
oh well thanks good to see other ppl making good use of tech.
i think your doing a great job for older people, they should i think it should be made easier for older people to have access to computers many of them are missing out on so much !
I think these videos of your are splendid. A member of my family gave my grandmother her old computer, and although she was initially interested in learning about it, she soon just gave up on it. When I go home from university on break, I will be sure to show me grandmother your videos that show testimonies of others near her age, as none of the seniors she knows do anything with computers and she only hears about it from her younger family members. Thank you very much for what you're doing.
I think that they think 'they will mess something up' is what causes most of the elder people to stay away from the PC. If they can get the jump start it is a marvelous thing for them for endless entertainment.
GREAT thinking, I've discussed this with Peter just now, maybe we can do something along these lines with the Silver Surfer Advocates, once we get non-profit status worked out with it. Perhaps a "Donate your old computer" program.
Playing games is actually a great beginner's way of getting used to basics on the computer!
Cool series, Peter. I hope you do more of these - especially highlighting the joys that computers can bring that are difficult to bring about otherwise - both for elderly and others who are not up to travelling around to keep in touch!
i think so many people now get started at schools and at clubs and things like that but the majority of people who attend these things are younger people so i think what shoould be addressed is why younger people feel more attracted to these things than elder people and what their differances of opinion are :)
Good job Peter. I think that the "silver generation" could actually enjoy and benefit from the internet(as you have proven so well the last couple of years)even more than the young folks. A longtime fan of yours just want you to know that I am still around and enjoying your videos my friend. Peace.
It's so good of you to help your peers both to become more comfortable with computers and to see how computers can connect them with others. You've already done so much through posting on Youtube, joining The Zimmers, and doing interviews. Yet here you are doing even more. Best wishes for the Silver Surfers program(me) to be a golden success.
Brilliant Peter - just lovely. I think the main thing that attracts people of ALL ages is the ability to communicate so easily and in so many ways. Making new friends, locating old ones, connecting with family. A wonderful tool indeed.
I think more elderly people (Young as you feel!) Should use computers. Many use telephones and they would not have had them a lot when they were younger, they learned to use those and they probably couldnt live without one, So why not give a computer a go?
I am 61 and my husband won't touch the computer. When he is annoyed with me he threatens to mess up my computer by touching a few keys. I laugh because the remark stems from his fear of computers.
It seems the elderly men are more interested in tackling the high tech stuff than the women. That's too bad but some day this issue will be obsolete, the same as the technology we are using.
Out flirting with the ladies again, Peter? This was a very good interview. I think all of us started with the games and moved up from there. I think this woman could inspire others to want to give computers a go. Great job!!
I had a thought when you discussed trying to get into a day center. Maybe you could contact a nonprofit, or the appropriate section of your government, to discuss giving computer literacy classes to the very elderly and/or providing the elderly who live alone or in a home with computers. So many elderly are alone and disconnected from the world, the internet would give them something they could do despite their frailties.
Hi Peter and Hi Grannie! Playing games on a computer can keep your mind sharp and your reflexes too. It is a great tool that puts the world's libraries and art galleries at your fingertips.
I got my high school diploma at 39 and started college at 41, when I walked onto that campus and saw all the computers I cried, as I knew I would have to use them and I had never touched one before, but I took a class and learned enough to graduate at 45! I love my computer now!
Two perfect testimonials, Peter. Granny, especially, is an example of the progression from mortal fear of the cursor to having a casual conversation on Skype. All it takes is some coaxing, and some coaching.
I countered my own Dad's fear of "breaking it" by making a backup of his OS on CD, and then explaining that it was insurance. That gave him the edge of confidence that if he DID "break it," I could fix it in minutes. And he did. And I did. More than once. LOL
What a wonderful video...I will write to her as soon as she gets an address on youtube ...hehe...
Seniors can do this things...if they are helped...what wonderful ideas Peter!
Bless you dear.
there should be computer rooms in every senior community center in every convelescent and retirement center...then people like you can come in a get them started. Yeah Peter!
Hi Peter, that was a wonderful video. You are so good at interviewing and explaining things. I know I have to call my son in Mn.(I'm in Fl.) to get help if something goes wrong with my computer. He usually can "walk" me through the problem and I'm good to go again. I'll never think of myself as old (69)!! Take care, Sherry P.
I was just thinking how nice it would be if I could talk to my Grandma like this. Shes heading for ninety now, but she still lives on her own and goes out every day. Unfortunately though, she doesn't own an computer and I don't live near enough to help show her how to use one. Plus she seems to think that it's all beyond her (although I'm sure it isn't). Hopefully there will be more help for the elderly to overcome these barriers in the future.
WONDERFUL! WONDERFUL! This was a GREAT IDEA to see these interesting people and learn of their new found fascination with computers as senior citizens! I hope you will introduce us to more of your friends around the world, perhaps once a month, so that we can see the progress that is being made. You're opening doors, Peter. Now let's open that Wide World Web...!
