The government wouldn't want to hurt microsoft that badly, I mean where else would they go when they feel like extorting some money from a company... after the tobacco companies run out?
If this sounds like bad logic, than I must say - you've never worked in or with the federal government. For them it doesn't need to make logic - it's not their money after all.
Government uses open source pervasively. From within their tanks, battleships, to super computers, to intelligence gathering, to mundane server farms, ...it's everywhere you turn in the government.

"There are a lot of other players in there as well, but open source is quickly expanding in the government space. That's my point."
Rapid expansion od open source lowers quality of integration below any acceptable levels, reduces economic freedom and possibility of creating new small companies, lower's salaries of truly intelligent ppl below salary levels of jobs for which you can train for less than 10 years. That's my point.
I am deep in the weeds of the open-source in gov. field. Competition is fierce, but open source really stimulates econ. freedom. Quality is always mixed, but open source components are shooting well ahead. There is a ton of opp. in integration works. Tons of opportunites to tie these technologies together.
Open source is tremendously good for business, ultimately higher quality, and definitely more secure. It is a very good thing. Technology and market freedom at its best.
However proprietary should always and will always, in a free enterprise and free market economy, be an option. The success or failure of proprietary products will depend solely on its value and performance.
The difficulty arises in an environment of proprietary product domination that creeps into a complete and draconian monopoly of the same. This is where Open Source shines through as an alternative to products produced by predatory corporations.
I work for Los Angeles County (their IT division). It's a dire situation. They use proprietary software in contracts with hardware and support that are just ridiculously expensive. For example HP rips them off for that OVO monitoring software that is an absolute bag of shit and then charges license fees for every server monitored. I suggested they switch to Nagios but they rejected it because since it was open software didn't have vendor support.
If this is how management of LA County manages their pocketbooks they'd be broke by now I guarantee you!
It is a complete waste of money, irresponsible spending, then they don't want to change things because people who were trained on certain software do not want to learn to use new cheaper software. If in private co. - you either learn or u fired.
This is why we need small government, because they're wasting people's money. I would say at least 50% of the resources are a complete waste!
Love me some open source. But are we (as in United States) headed for more open source in government? If we are, it's only temporary. Closed source systems will prevail, unfortunately. When was the last time anything won out over anything else in the technology field because it was better?
You mean the .50 cal? I'm sure the .50 cal replaced some other form of light armor piercing weapons. Weaponry is probably the only place in which superior technology prevails over inferior technology. Though as most wars have shown us, WWII being my favorite example, superior technology only prevails in the boardroom. When it gets out in to the field, it's all about the numbers being thrown around. Zerg rush > superior technology any day of the week.
Yes open source is the future, but commercial software for specialized domains will still exist. They are not mutually exclusive. The biggest benefit of open source is not the no cost software. It's the defacto standards. You don't have to waste resources training people to use an obscure commercial product.
As far as open source being the future of government... The only logical response is that if the human race is going to have a future, it will have to be in the absence of government.

Open source and capitalism are 2 totally different animals and as compatible as oil and water. Open source is more akin to charity. It is a community of people donating time and energy to create a free product that benefits everyone and is usually better then anything the private sector creates since they are under profit and time constraints to release an unfinished product. Open source lets every see and fix problems and bugs in the software but Market software is secret and proprietary.
dddienst, capitalism and open source are totally compatible. Sure, capitalists can sell software that's protected by copyright, but you can also be a capitalist by using open source software. Red Hat has proven that open source works in the OS field, at least with servers, and WordPress and Drupal make money through support and development for big sites. Seems pretty capitalist to me!
"It is a community of people donating time and energy to create a free product that benefits everyone"
- while this is true for some people in open source communities, it is missing the point. E. g. Drupal's community that Shelly's talking about here for example is driven by a multitude of companies who are using Drupal to make money.
The immediate goal is much more often to build an improvement that your client project will pay for rather than creating a free social benefit.
It doesn't matter if they are doing it to make money or to help the community. It's still a capitalist activity. It's voluntary, freedom, and therefore capitalist. It's the highest form of capitalism. It's called anarchist mutual aid.
Governments are not in business for profit. They produce nothing. We need transparency for 'WE THE PEOPLE' and not for BIG govt criminals....watch #3 on
Seriously, people have their own agendas, cant add or balance sheets, simply do not represent others. Computers can do this and are in one way or the other. Unfortunately for now we have people using the computers against us rather than for.
Would you rather have the key, or leave it to Bill G?
Soon, if perhaps the large corps fall, open source hardware will have a real chance at this new world open source order.
There's no question that open source is the way to go. Another advantage is security, no back doors, it's stable, and without all the bloat or DRM crippling technology. In fact I am writing this on a Linux box. So I mean what I say, and walk the talk.
Free market has a more accurate comparison to a BSD license than GNU, just as Laissez Faire provides some structural rules than "Free market" holds no real structure. Programs like Drupal and other open source projects are strong for their requirement of sharing what you improve. "Free market" and "sharing" are usually not in the same sentence. In other words without a outline structure you face the same fate as BSD, your work is flat out taken without any return.
Sounds like a system ripe for a propaganda experiment... they could easily manipulate people's voting by positioning their needs in concert with a proposition or candidate.... whilst everyone is still hooked into listening to pundits who are benefitting from an instituion/corporation, the viewpoint they receive will be tailored to best advocate on behalf of said institution/corporatate interest... still, I'd like to see how it works out.
Sorry, but I'm not trying to improve things for our government, I want to improve them for our citizens.
I love open source, but the connection to government is fairly irrelevant. Unless someone comes up with a secure, direct-democracy script that lets us represent ourselves, or individually appoint our own representative. Imagine if you could be from PA and select a TX congressman to represent you! Or even cast your own vote on each issue.
Direct-democracy sounded impractical but if you could individually select your representative that would be great. Very few people have the time to review the bills and people with minority viewpoints are under-represented. It would also be great to override an issue if it is important to you.

Drupal is okay, but has a number of flaws:

- Despite having this army of developers, many of the modules (even popular ones) have bugs / issues that don't get fixed for weeks, months, ever.
- Is a slow resource hog, that is really only suitable for fairly static sites, which is ironic given it is pushed as somethig to build community sites on.

No problems here. I mean, she is not the clearest speaker, but she is not a radio personality. I didn't miss a single word. Maybe you need better speakers.
