I've noticed most ATG fans either love SOTS or hate it. I don't see why really. Is it because it's realy the only album people know of ATG or what? It really is a amazing album, has to be to consider a pioneer of Melodic Death Metal with The Gallery and Jester Race but people seem to hate it

Congratulations to bravemetal and Silent44 for having an intelligent and worthwhile disscusion on Youtube. I am so sick and tired of comments along the lines of "XXX is shit and your gay", "no yyy sucks and your a faggot" etc
Breakdowns are only found in shitty metalcore/deathcore/fake-teenage-angst-metal bands. You won't find any breakdowns in real metal songs by metal gods such as At The Gates.
pretty ignorant comment, metal is best defined as being a compilation of melodic and heavy, having breakdowns in the song structure definetly adds to a song and the athmosphere of the music, ill agree that some bands over use them a lot, but any good band will definetly utilize them to signature a song and it definetly adds to a live show, nothing better then moshing to a breakdown, listen to some Lamb of God or Messhuggah, some of there songs are entirely structured around breakdowns @Silent44
Name me some metal bands that are categorized only as Death Metal, Melodic Death Metal or Thrash Metal that use breakdowns. Don't mention shitty metalcore, metal imitation bands like Meshuggah. These teenagers add these breakdowns because they don't actually have the talent to make heavy music, just mediocre fast music with screaming. Also, you said: "metal is best defined as being a compilation of melodic and heavy". Very ignorant comment. There are many genres in metal. -cont-
These genres include Power Metal, Folk Metal, and Doom metal to name a few. None have to fit your uneducated opinion. Also, does Iron Maiden and Judas Priest sound heavy to you? You probably don't even recognize half the things I'm mentioning. All you know is the devil wears prada that you hear on the radio.
In closing, find the "I'm so heavy and badass because my parents grounded me" breakdown in this song: watch?v=Ub3ofkY29Dw
How is Meshuggah a metal imitation band? There probably one of the most unique sounding bands out there, they use 7 string guitar, play very technical rhythmic structures, and probably have one of the best metal drummers in the world, There are many genres in metal, and melody is definitely important part in all genres, I dont know why you get offended so easily, I didnt say breakdowns are essential for every band but simply dismiss them as being shitty or childish is pretty ignorant, @Silent44
Why is it so hard for you to understand that Meshuggah is not Metal? Go ahead and argue that it is the best band in the world and the musicians are the most talented. Just don't categorize it as Metal. It is Metalcore. If people ask you what kind of music you like, say "Metal, Metalcore and some Deathcore" just don't say Metal then when asked what bands say Meshuggah. You're just embarrassing us.
My point still stands. You can not find breakdowns in Metal.
Im currently writing my masters thesis on the history of metal as a subculture, to imply that a band is not metal is completely juvenile, '' Meshuggah is not metal '' your arguments are not founded, metal is the relationship between ideologies, identity and music, the history of metal shows that all genres are seeded in common identity and have evolve with time, Metalcore and deathcore are definetly metal since they share a common history with other genres, your embarrasing yourself @Silent44
@bravametal " Im currently writing my masters thesis on the history of metal as a subculture". I now lose the argument derp derp.
Metal rarely ever shares a relationship with ideologies and identity outside of each subgenre. You can not say that Sodom and Sonata Arctica share the same ideologies. They only identify with each other as being Metal bands. The music is the only relationship they have because of the core structures and techniques they have modified to make their own sound.
@Silent44 Metalcore/Deathcore have not evolved from any known metal genre, but instead have half-assingly (not a word) attempted to revolutionize the thrash/death genre resulting in mediocre imitations. Remember, evolution=/=revolution.
What you are arguing is that bands like The New Cities are proper evolutions to bands like AC/DC or Pearl Jam. You know, ignorant people like yourself probably call The New Cities rock & roll. Sadly, people actually do.
What are you arguing for? From what you just said it seems you agree with my analysis of metal as a culture, you previously stated that Messhugah was not metal, I wanted to clarify that each genre is seeded in the same history, their ideologies may have evolved but they still share a common identity, whether you enjoy a particular genre over an another is entirely left to personal taste, but to dismiss a band and a genre as being part of the collective identity is illogical @Silent44
You can argue personnal taste for days at a time, you dislike metalcore and there's nothing wrong with that but you dismiss there evolution as being a part of metal, music is about influences and creativity, metalcore is the evolution of music by the influence of another, by your definition you believe that an artist invented a metalcore band with no prior knowledge of rock or thrash bands, witch is impossible, every artirst that has written an album must have an influence @bravametal
The problem is not their ideologies or who they identify with, it's their music. Going from Heavy Metal to Speed Metal then Thrash Metal ending up with Death Metal is a logical, progressive and slow evolution. Going from Heavy Metal to Metalcore or from Death Metal to Deathcore is not an evolution at all. It happened nearly overnight and to any Metalhead was completely new music with a metal tag attached. It is commercial music. It's here to fill the gap for angry teens.
Metal as a sub-genre of music is not commercial, it was created and persists as an underground movement, some bands have know commercial success (Metallica), and are a prime example of the possibility of selling out but I doubt you could mention a metalcore band that has known this success, if your referring to copy cat bands that filler more breakdowns to be sell recoreds than I would agree that there is an abundance of those, but your should never generalize and dismiss a genre @Silent44
There is also the problem of labeling bands and categorizing their music, Its quite difficult to say a band is metalcore when they have influences of speed or thrash at the same time, it becomes a double standard to hate on a band for a specific reason and then to lush for one when they have some sort of similarity, im just rambling on now, metal as a culture is more interestin (in my opinion) than any other category of music, keep headbanging, stay open minded and have a good one @Silent44
@DragonicGod thats the solo, a breakdown is the interlude of a song that breaks from the original structure, its categorized by open string riffs played in harmony with the kick drums to achieve a very low but heavy sound; there pretty easy to recognize, its the heaviest part of a song, but this song dosent have a breakdown
That is most definitely a solo. Solos generally consist of a fast-paced sequence of high-pitched notes being played over the normal chorus or verse riff. Breakdowns, on the other hand, generally involve power chords being played on the lower strings in half time, with each power chord being allowed to hang for 2-4 seconds, which gives the section a strong chugging sound. No melodic death metal band that I'm aware of makes use of breakdowns of any sort (At The Gates included).
As much as I would love to agree with you, I personally believe Dissection's Storm Of The Light's Bane could be the greatest. For me, this is within the top 5 though.
great ,great for ever ¡¡¡¡¡¡nice vocals,nice band¡¡¡¡

Breakdowns are only found in shitty metalcore/deathcore/fake-teenage-angst-metal bands. You won't find any breakdowns in real metal songs by metal gods such as At The Gates.
Silent44 2 years ago
pretty ignorant comment, metal is best defined as being a compilation of melodic and heavy, having breakdowns in the song structure definetly adds to a song and the athmosphere of the music, ill agree that some bands over use them a lot, but any good band will definetly utilize them to signature a song and it definetly adds to a live show, nothing better then moshing to a breakdown, listen to some Lamb of God or Messhuggah, some of there songs are entirely structured around breakdowns @Silent44

@bravametal
-cont-

@Silent44

@bravametal
Silent44 1 year ago
Im currently writing my masters thesis on the history of metal as a subculture, to imply that a band is not metal is completely juvenile, '' Meshuggah is not metal '' your arguments are not founded, metal is the relationship between ideologies, identity and music, the history of metal shows that all genres are seeded in common identity and have evolve with time, Metalcore and deathcore are definetly metal since they share a common history with other genres, your embarrasing yourself @Silent44
bravametal 1 year ago
@bravametal " Im currently writing my masters thesis on the history of metal as a subculture". I now lose the argument derp derp.
Metal rarely ever shares a relationship with ideologies and identity outside of each subgenre. You can not say that Sodom and Sonata Arctica share the same ideologies. They only identify with each other as being Metal bands. The music is the only relationship they have because of the core structures and techniques they have modified to make their own sound.
Silent44 1 year ago
@Silent44 Metalcore/Deathcore have not evolved from any known metal genre, but instead have half-assingly (not a word) attempted to revolutionize the thrash/death genre resulting in mediocre imitations. Remember, evolution=/=revolution.
What you are arguing is that bands like The New Cities are proper evolutions to bands like AC/DC or Pearl Jam. You know, ignorant people like yourself probably call The New Cities rock & roll. Sadly, people actually do.
Silent44 1 year ago
What are you arguing for? From what you just said it seems you agree with my analysis of metal as a culture, you previously stated that Messhugah was not metal, I wanted to clarify that each genre is seeded in the same history, their ideologies may have evolved but they still share a common identity, whether you enjoy a particular genre over an another is entirely left to personal taste, but to dismiss a band and a genre as being part of the collective identity is illogical @Silent44
bravametal 1 year ago
You can argue personnal taste for days at a time, you dislike metalcore and there's nothing wrong with that but you dismiss there evolution as being a part of metal, music is about influences and creativity, metalcore is the evolution of music by the influence of another, by your definition you believe that an artist invented a metalcore band with no prior knowledge of rock or thrash bands, witch is impossible, every artirst that has written an album must have an influence @bravametal
bravametal 1 year ago
@bravametal
Silent44 1 year ago
Metal as a sub-genre of music is not commercial, it was created and persists as an underground movement, some bands have know commercial success (Metallica), and are a prime example of the possibility of selling out but I doubt you could mention a metalcore band that has known this success, if your referring to copy cat bands that filler more breakdowns to be sell recoreds than I would agree that there is an abundance of those, but your should never generalize and dismiss a genre @Silent44
bravametal 1 year ago
There is also the problem of labeling bands and categorizing their music, Its quite difficult to say a band is metalcore when they have influences of speed or thrash at the same time, it becomes a double standard to hate on a band for a specific reason and then to lush for one when they have some sort of similarity, im just rambling on now, metal as a culture is more interestin (in my opinion) than any other category of music, keep headbanging, stay open minded and have a good one @Silent44

Anyone want to tell me some other band names that are Similar to this type of amazing music? I NEED MORE!
Omglazorguns 2 years ago
There is hardly any comparable band to "AT THE GATES"
Try the early "In Flames" or "Dark Tranquillity" albums...
Or perhaps "Dimension Zero", "Mnemic" or "Fall of Serenity" could be interesting for you.

I'm sorry, I'm new to what exactly a breakdown is, but I think I'm getting it, is it from 2:27 to 2:43, or is that just a solo?
DragonicGod 2 years ago
@DragonicGod i'm not that good at telling either, but that's not a breakdown from what i can tell.
friendlyfirez 2 years ago
@DragonicGod, its no breakdown.... a solo indeed. breakdowns are much slower, the real ''moshparts''
whenalllightdiesnl 2 years ago
@DragonicGod thats the solo, a breakdown is the interlude of a song that breaks from the original structure, its categorized by open string riffs played in harmony with the kick drums to achieve a very low but heavy sound; there pretty easy to recognize, its the heaviest part of a song, but this song dosent have a breakdown
bravametal 2 years ago
@DragonicGod
