Remember, the audience for this Matt Lauer special are Americans who mostly don't know anything about Iran other than the takeover of the American embassy. With that in mind, I don't think this was a bad show if all it does is show to Americans that Iranian people in Iran are not as scary or as culturally isolated as most Americans think they are.

Professor Aghajari's case is one of great concern. Twice lower courts sentenced him to death, twice this was overturned by the Supreme Court before he was eventually sentenced to three years' imprisonment with two suspended.
His "crime", criticising the notion of supreme clerical leadership coming between the people and God, is one of the key issues being debated by many outside and, yes, inside Iran.

In Iran the clerics rule as the messenger between God and people. Whoever dares to criticize this connection will be in problem. We have had many arrests of student leaders and opposition inside Iran in the past 10 years, who spoke officially against the regime. Akbar Mohamadi (died in prison), Manucher Mohamadi, Fakhravar the list wont fit here if I continued. Besides oppression of teacher and worker movements and trying to stamp everyone who dares to say anything as a spy of the West.

No, which is why I --- and many others --- protested publicly and privately. And many in Iran --- within the "system" as well as critics of it --- also challenged those detentions.

There is a great deal of debate --- in seminaries, in law schools, in political elites, and definitely in private homes --- over the place of the clerical leadership in Iran's system.
That does not justify the treatment of Aghajari for expressing his position. But he was not put to death --- his sentence was reduced --- precisely because the Supreme Leader and the President, amongst others, challenged the lower court's ruling.
Far from a dictatorship...

Oh yeah its a sign of a humanitarian system putting a person on death sentence in first place. This statement on its own alone shows the inhuman system of Iran. The fact that Iran is not in hand of one dictator is true. The power is divided between the Fuhrer Chamenei, President and other Mullah minions who play behind the curtain. Yes, this makes it not a totalitarian Dictatorship but a multi-pole Dictatorship yet they still dictate and force their views of Islam every day on the streets.

I respect your opinion on the Iranian system, even though I disagree with it. I do believe that there is a chance of engaging with Iranians to discuss and hopefully encourage political and social reform, rather than stoking the fires of conflict with talk of dictatorship.

Dude, I am Iranian. I grew up in that system. I know what it means to be arrested just for being out with few friends on the street. I know what it means to get star marks in your university file, because you are politically active. You are right Iran isn't as bad as the West is trying to show and yet it is not as good as these guys in the videos are trying to sugarcoat it. Iranian regime is a dictatorship but this doesn't make the hypocrites of Americans and British better. War is no solution.

We are the Americans that the individuals in this piece have said to have respect for and we condemn them for not looking more like us? What about the non-shaved Americans such as: Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, Ernest Hemingway, Robert E. Lee, Jim Morrison..just to name a few. And what about Jesus? Would it be more to your liking if he didn't have a beard and kept "a shaved face"? It seems you can have a beard and be taken seriously.
