I'm surprised how many people rate this as their favorite fall album. I like it a lot too but I didn't think it was generally rated that highly. I wonder is it something to do with when it came out; I'd say a lot of new people got exposed to the Fall around this time. Just speculating.

even the title of the album suggests that this is what the new fall set out to do. Mark fired the whole band from the unutterable, which was critically acclaimed. and he deliberately recorded this album with a grainy rockabilly feel to it.

It must be really hard to do a Fall video - they're not photogenic, they don't dance ( thank god!), they don't even really have a "look" which is the whole point of the fall of course. Despite this, not a bad video and of course a great song from their second best album. IMHO!

the compass is as bold as brass in the backdrop...there's also the navigator of the ship in the opening sequence which isn't accidental in light of the compass and also the black and white chequer board (btw AW discussed the significance of the chancellor of the exchequer t'other day: not unusually telling me s'thing i didn't know); we've got a 'hall' of mirrors too and it's brought to us by 'Bohemin' [sic] visual music
