I see NONE of that what anyone is talking about. He NEVER told anyone in his band what to play, when to play, or how to play. Airto Moriera has some good stories about that. He had no idea what Miles meant when he told him, "just listen, and play". Wise words like that take a bit of time to "get". Later, he would conduct stops and starts on stage, but not really anything else. He let these musicians do whatever, and no matter what would go down, a phrase from him would tie it altogether. Genius.
I can't appreciate this..I don't get it..All my time...I've never got it...My friends worship Miles and judging by all the people on this earth..he is worshiped for something I will never know. I can feel the impulsiveness, the drive, the passion, the push through, the manic force, it just doesn't touch my heart musically. Maybe cause I'm a sentimental child, crying for his mummy..I dunno. A bit lonely.
@mistersmith6000 - Miles' "electric period" music is notoriously avant-garde and hard to grasp. Why not try something else from his other "classic" periods? Like the Walkin', Steamin' and Relaxin' LP's from the 50's (on Prestige)...or Kind Of Blue from 1959...or Someday My Prince Will Come from 1961...or Round About Midnight from 1957...
is this from the Bitches Brew box set DVD? wanna get the live performances but don't want to rebuy the album again. nice box for those who don't own a copy of BB, but pretty pricey. Just want the DVDs.
@RubHerSoul1 IIRC, it's only the Copenhagen performance (from a few days earlier) that's included on DVD in the new BB set. This Berlin concert is only available on bootleg DVD. Hell, I just discovered I don't even have it. ;)

Absolutely. Purists be damned, they live in the past. Music (and everything else) is in a constant state of flux and evolution. Even what wilobowski calls jazz would have, at one time, been dismissed as non-jazz by purists of an earlier form of jazz. Clearly the artists at the forefront, who are pushing out in new directions, are the most important players in defining what an artform is, means and can be for generations of people.
@thetwentyfourth hell yeah, i couldn't agree anymore. jazz is all about breaking the rules. jazz is all about traveling in new and exciting directions as you said. the purists aren't purists at all. they're just conforming assholes who think jazz should be 'this one thing and this one thing only'. miles then graciously gave them the finger :)

A lot of people don't really get the idea of what Miles was doing here. I admit it is not really jazz, but it is still bloody good.

@wilobowski
This IS total jazz my man. At it's best. And Miles stretched the limits of jazz music. To this day this is what jazz players still 'try' to play.
