Lokius maximus stop being a film critic lets see you make a film like that and if you can't stop saying that rocky 4 was rubbish don't bother watching rocky
this was a way better ending. Not to mention, the cut-scene audio clips, and the original ROCKY music playing in the background. Not the trash they played in the theater version
@TecmoBO34 You myst be 80 years old. The Rocky music just didnt fit with this scene. The rap beat and the way they edited it for the theater version made the scene seem more suspenseful.
@taekwon3000 80 years old? not even close. I just think there is something traditional with using the original Rocky score when it comes to the Rocky movies. The hip-hop garbage is pure crap
@TecmoBO34 Its not that. The "Hip Hop garbage": fiuts well with this scene because it is not a traditional Boxing scene where they are Boxing in the ring. It is a STREET FIGHT IN THE GHETTO. It is about what goes with what. It doesn't matter anyways because the movie itself was out of the ordinary due to that scene and Rocky being broke again.
This is very interesting, I had never seen this until now. Rocky V was pretty poor overall but it is not a complete right off, the end credits are superb! John Avildsen said that when he worked with Stallone in the first Rocky film, that Sly was a hungry actor and by the time they filmed Rocky V, the changes in Stallone were so vast, that he wouldn't even come out from his trailer between shots.
I do agree with most of the footage getting scrapped, with the entrance and the "you got everythinng to lose here" line, but it could have still gone good with helping Tommy Gunn up.
Still, they made the new scene as good, if not better in my opinion.
I agree .. though this ending would not have saved this sorry excuse for a Rocky film, it would have been 'slighty' more realistic than the ending provided in the movie we all had to see. :'/
@bxr73 The whole films purpose was to end a legend. Like Apollo, like Mickey, like all the greats who met their end. Rocky was to meet his and leave his legacy to his son who Rocky wished he would of done so all along. It would of been the best Rocky ever, not one of depression and hopelessness but one where the best of us can face the change of the world like Mickey and fall just as we are. However MGM got involved and said since they owned the lisence Silvester could not kill the hero.
This would have been a much better ending for ROCKY V. This ending is darker, the reactions are less cartoonish, and "Going the Distance" brings the film back to its roots. I also loved the Mickey sequence, I don't know why they took that out. Still, not even this ending would have saved an otherwise ridiculous movie. The worst of the series.
...both versions should of been printed >:( keep the original as the theatre, but they should of made this cut for the shelf if wanted....actually like it for other reasons
I think this is very far the better ending for Rocky V. They really need to release a director's cut version for Rocky V. I'd buy it in a heartbeat. The only thing I will say is that I wish they'd stuck to the original script and had Rocky die at the end of the fight. Not only would it have been far more powerful, but it'd have prevented that garbage Rocky Balboa from ever being released.
Im one of the few who thinks rocky 6 is pretty crap. It was made purely to follow the old rocky formulas, not made from slys own genius storytelling heart. Sly knew that if he wnated a new film career, he would have to make that formulaic rocky 6 and publicy disown rocky 5. If he admittd he still liked 5, his new film career would finish instantly.
Deep down, i dont think he really hates 5 as he says he does. I love 5 and think its way underrated.
@Noobkilla99786 What are you talking about? This is from the VHS that contained the original version of the film. This was obviously taken with a capture card.
when i just saw this shit right now.i felt like i was back from 1990's in a time machine for telling Stallone to do it EXACTLY like this.this is how it should have been.the directors cut is the real rocky 5.no rap shit(don't belong rocky) no go for it. i like Mickey segment.Clubber and Drago flashback.rocky trying to reason with tommy.shakin his hand after the fight=FUCKING EPIC
Any scene featuring Going the Distance is awesome, this version is good but kinda drags a bit on the Mickey part. also the cop asking for an autograph was so out of place.
Thank God they didn't go with the cut were Rocky dies at the end! Stallone litterally rewrote the script days before filming the fight but I must admit the music doesn't really match the scene too much or the mood unfortunatly or at least as well as Keep it Up did.
@alienbrothers I agree, the rap beat fit much better I hate to say it but the the one we saw in the theatres was the right scene to be shown to the public.
Stallone and Avildsen should really consider releasing a Director's Cut of Rocky V. The end with Tommy accepting Rocky's hand and defeat should have been in the theatrical cut, cuz at least it showed Tommy still had respect for Rocky, plus it was sort of sweet seeing one of the cops wanting Tommy's autograph.
I prefer this ending better except they should have also kept the part where he KOs the promotor idiot. This also makes me think that Tommy Gunnj became good and maybe went back to Rocky's side after this fight.
A mix to this version and the final version was a very good alternative. The best part of this is the montage to Clubber Lang and Mickey speak in the railroad but... that is the light version, Tommy force Rocky a fight, and the combat must have a winner but i like in the ring no in the streets...
very nice, theatrical was great . this one is good it has more ties with all the other actors in the other movies, like the father, marie and of course micky
1) Before the fight, Rocky tries to talk Tommy out of it one last time. Rocky was not a violent person, and he still loved Tommy. I think it fits his character.
2) Tommy blindly sucker punches Rocky. I think that makes TG a better villain bc after he does that, u wanna see Rocky take his head off.
3) The handshake once again, goes to Rockys character. The fight was something he didnt want & despite everything Tommy did, Rocky still loved him. Plus it redeems Tommy
@StuUngar Fight definitely needs parts of it cut out and Mickey saying "beat the shit" out of him is a little over the top. Comes off as more comical than anything else.
Also liked the throwback song "Going the Distance." Any of Bill Conti's songs would've been better than "Go For It."
@StuUngar totally agree with everything u said. plus remember when the cops arrest tg in the original, y wouldnt they arrest rocky also??? that doesnt make sense and is inconsistent. when they showed the cops breaking it up here in the end, it makes more sense and the authograph part was hilarious. i never got the whole arrest part, breaking it up makes more sense u know... the fight was hell of a lot better than the original. i liked the talking between them. and the music was amazing...
they should make a rocky 5 dvdwith all the missing stuff with the excetion of the marie subplot joust so it can stay in the cannon of rocky6 and still take the micky ghost and use what was in the original version
I liked Rocky's attempt to convince Tommy not to fight with him in the beginning. I always liked Mick's character but him saying "beat the **** out of him" doesn't fit for some reason. That was surprising, Rocky helping him up in the end, and the cop asking for an autograph lol. I think I do prefer the theatrical cut but this was entertaining as well. Thank you for uploading this, it's nice to see alternate cuts of scenes.
Hmmm I dont know, I loved rocky 6, and if they had used the original ending, it would have been about tommy fighting or the son of rocky throwing the punches... So I guess I prefer the theatrical version
I wonder how much this movie would have changed if they used the original ending idea. The original planned ending is that rocky dies after beating Tommy Gunn. I think that ending would have changed this movie completely. This ending is pretty cool too.
i liked rocky extending the hand to tommy at the end. it showed rocky how genuine he was and was a fair underdog and TRULY still the people's champ and the TRUE CHAMP.
dude that was fucking awesome! they should of kept alot of the elements of this alternate one and combined it with the theatrical ones music in this scene, and the theatrical one had more walls and stuff used. aside from that, this ending was really good and for the most part should of been kept.
Did he shoot the ending where he as planning on Rocky dying in Adrian's arms?
I know it would have meant no Rocky Balboa, but it would have been a sad moment to end the film on. Would have felt like a proper climax to the series.
Tommy Morrison was a great fighter, in this movie and real life. It's too bad the timing didn't work out for a Tyson vs. Morrison fight. That would have been one hell of a slugfest. Tommy's left hook vs Tyson's shear power. I think Mike had better defensive skills (bobbing and weaving), and was more agile than The Duke. Tyson KO in 6 or 7.
i like this version alot better, i like how the fights starts with Rocky, tellin off the shouters and how hes tryin to reason with Tommy, and Tommy just goes into it. i liek how Mickey is a ghost here and is more aggressive with Rocky. i love how Rocky still tries to reason with Tommy durin the fight and then Tommy comes around at the end. if this version had the "touch me and ill sue" uppercut and music playin durin the "one more round" scene, before Rockys theme..then it wouldve been perfect.
@PeterBParker there you go i completely agree! although i liked the part in the theatrical version that started in the alley in the fight near the dumpster too...but then it seemed Rocky got TOO angry very quickly,i always pictured Rocky trying a little harder to reason with Tommy. after all,him and Tommy were spending over a year together training before all this happened
I liked both versions. In the maintained version I liked the Mickey and Drago flashbacks and the music fitted the time but in this I liked the handshake gesture and the policeman who actually asks for Tommy's autograph at 7.42- thats better and more 'Rocky' than the total humiliation of the first.
@WORLD8NSH5KNIGHT1 yea they should of kept the autograph thing in the theatrical one and i liked Rocky helping him up too. it seemed more "Rocky" ish to me...
I think that was timely for the era. That's the stuff they were listening to in the early 90's, anyway, that rap/club sound. Plus, it identified with the 'street fight'. A Rocky first, in his 'Rocky' films. I found this to be refreshing, too, though.
"Beat the shit outta 'em!" I prefer the theatrical version as well. But this was totally RAW. I kinda missed the 'Get up you son-of- a-bitch, cause Mickey loves you' part, though! *lol*
Hey you were right silverrhawk! This version here is good! Why'd they take this out? Rocky was trying to get Tommy to call it off and after the fight, Rocky helps Tommy to his feet. Tommy accepts his defeat and realizes that Rocky was right:
'if you don't respect the game, the game won't respect you'.
no way Rocky isnt a thug hes a real boxer most people like this because they cant see what really stallones trying to say in the final version this is just a stupid street fight between 2 dumbasses in my option
Part of it was better (I liked the montages from other Rocky's) but the ending seemed rushed at the way last part. Def should have been a blend of the two and I agree we needed the part where Rocky uppercuts the Don King promoter... Touch me and I'll sue... come on Rock touch me and I'll sue.
@MattP725. I agree they should have combined the two.
I like how in the original Micky tells him "Get up you son of a bitch, cause Mickey loves ya". That line should definitely been in there. I also like how in the original fight Rocky kicks Tommy's ass in the beginning. I kinda like the theatrical version better. Regardless, it's still cool to see the direction of the film and how Stallone was playing with ideas. Great post, MainBalboa!
@MattP725 I agree that it should've been a blend of the two, especially the Mickey speach and the end handshake. I thought that the film made Tommy into a heartless goon too quickly, without any conflict of his own devotion to Rocky's legacy vs. money and fame. I also think the uppercut to the sleazy promoter was needed.
it is better the original sucks, i hate that there are peices of fight, the first rocky knocks him down then tommy knocks himn down then rocky and so on, this one is more realistic
hmmm not sure which fight i prefer. i think they should have definitely kept more dialogue between rocky and tommy in there ("i ain't got nothing to lose tommy, you got everything!") and the handshake at the end. however this version doesn't have punching duke or rocky starting to whup tommy's ass before tommy only fights back when rocky turns his back.
"come on kid beat the shit out of him" hahaha

i like this version alot better, i like how the fights starts with Rocky, tellin off the shouters and how hes tryin to reason with Tommy, and Tommy just goes into it. i liek how Mickey is a ghost here and is more aggressive with Rocky. i love how Rocky still tries to reason with Tommy durin the fight and then Tommy comes around at the end. if this version had the "touch me and ill sue" uppercut and music playin durin the "one more round" scene, before Rockys theme..then it wouldve been perfect.
PeterBParker 2 years ago 3
@PeterBParker there you go i completely agree! although i liked the part in the theatrical version that started in the alley in the fight near the dumpster too...but then it seemed Rocky got TOO angry very quickly,i always pictured Rocky trying a little harder to reason with Tommy. after all,him and Tommy were spending over a year together training before all this happened
dragonfr746 1 year ago
the best part was Rocky's punch at 5:15, that was pretty badass!
Schumi1224 2 years ago
I liked both versions. In the maintained version I liked the Mickey and Drago flashbacks and the music fitted the time but in this I liked the handshake gesture and the policeman who actually asks for Tommy's autograph at 7.42- thats better and more 'Rocky' than the total humiliation of the first.
WORLD8NSH5KNIGHT1 2 years ago 2
@WORLD8NSH5KNIGHT1 yea they should of kept the autograph thing in the theatrical one and i liked Rocky helping him up too. it seemed more "Rocky" ish to me...
dragonfr746 1 year ago
@dragonfr746
Agreed. If I was the producer, I would have used this version but kept the music.
WORLD8NSH5KNIGHT1 1 year ago
Theatrical Cut was way better. They did a good job with the editing.

fucking nicee!!!!thanks mann!!!!that's glory...even that sly said that he didn;t like this one....i love rocky5..

Me, too. This music makes it feel more like a Rocky movie. Mickey's appearance is highly welcome.
Banner1979 2 years ago 2
I like the music better in this and should have been in theatrical. The rap music go for it was rubbish.
TheBryan61383 2 years ago 2
I think that was timely for the era. That's the stuff they were listening to in the early 90's, anyway, that rap/club sound. Plus, it identified with the 'street fight'. A Rocky first, in his 'Rocky' films. I found this to be refreshing, too, though.

Thanks for uploading this.
TheBryan61383 2 years ago
I prefer the theatrical but the hand shake part was good. That could have been in the theatrical in my opinion.
Mickey segment and the flashback of Clubber Lang was great.
silverrhawk 2 years ago 17
@silverrhawk Yeah I agree Silverrhawk! This was cool though!
DJLMovieGuy 2 years ago
"Beat the shit outta 'em!" I prefer the theatrical version as well. But this was totally RAW. I kinda missed the 'Get up you son-of- a-bitch, cause Mickey loves you' part, though! *lol*
SidJustice1 2 years ago 3
Hey you were right silverrhawk! This version here is good! Why'd they take this out? Rocky was trying to get Tommy to call it off and after the fight, Rocky helps Tommy to his feet. Tommy accepts his defeat and realizes that Rocky was right:
'if you don't respect the game, the game won't respect you'.

@silverrhawk
Agreed. Thanks for the link;

The Mickey Segment, albeit shot differently, was included in the final cut.

I love Mickey! :)
MaceIII 2 years ago
wow, at 3:01
the part where Mikey appears
was kind of creepy...
but this version without that damn rap music gives it a better right to call this film a "Rocky" movie...
KingCesar10121 2 years ago
Holy shit it's mind boggling how this wasn't used in the theatrical version.
This is WAY better.
haroof 2 years ago
no way Rocky isnt a thug hes a real boxer most people like this because they cant see what really stallones trying to say in the final version this is just a stupid street fight between 2 dumbasses in my option
ALEXISNACEOSBYRNE 2 years ago
What did Tommy say to Rocky before he said, "You remember?"
UGodd 2 years ago
This is 10000000 times better than the theatrical version. No stupid shaky cam on his kid screamin GO FOR IT! A better more realistic fight. Ugh...

etrrll 2 years ago 2
Part of it was better (I liked the montages from other Rocky's) but the ending seemed rushed at the way last part. Def should have been a blend of the two and I agree we needed the part where Rocky uppercuts the Don King promoter... Touch me and I'll sue... come on Rock touch me and I'll sue.
MattP725 2 years ago 11
ALEXontheTOOB 1 year ago
@MattP725 I agree that it should've been a blend of the two, especially the Mickey speach and the end handshake. I thought that the film made Tommy into a heartless goon too quickly, without any conflict of his own devotion to Rocky's legacy vs. money and fame. I also think the uppercut to the sleazy promoter was needed.

I would add in bit where Rocky decks the crooked promoter.

This one was better by far, but it would have been a lot better if he would have punched out Tommy's manager.
nr1341 2 years ago 3
it is better the original sucks, i hate that there are peices of fight, the first rocky knocks him down then tommy knocks himn down then rocky and so on, this one is more realistic
Garzo67 2 years ago 4
Rocky V really sucks
the best was the IV
J1009J 2 years ago
i do agree rocky IV was awsome, but the original rocky 5 fight was the best fight in my opinion

who would win a fight between tommy and clubber lang?
raulkiller09 2 years ago 3
Clubber.
Tommy was like a jobber compared to creed, lang and drago.
pricean 2 years ago 4
drago definatly! Tommy and clubber would be a nice fight, Clubber would win still, I'd love to see Drago kick tommy's ass tho!

jigoyawara 2 years ago
hmmm not sure which fight i prefer. i think they should have definitely kept more dialogue between rocky and tommy in there ("i ain't got nothing to lose tommy, you got everything!") and the handshake at the end. however this version doesn't have punching duke or rocky starting to whup tommy's ass before tommy only fights back when rocky turns his back.

Marie was at the end.

there was gonna be scene where she was as he predicted- a whore. i haven't found that scene though

Thay Should Have Never Cut This From The Film This is a Much Better Ending

I think they should have kept the handshake at the end between Tommy and Rocky.
