And another thing, as long as I'm on a rant here. The idiotic cultural obsession with front lawns. I mean, they are irrational both in their wasteful stupidity but also in terms of consumer competition. After all, they all look basically the same. Should we be planting apple trees on our front lawns and be making juice, pies and cider. Back during prohibition people drank cider by the tun (sic).
Right on Mr. Kunstler. With respect to car culture, not only are people in denial about getting around without a car, most of them think they will still be driving 6000 lb four wheel drive SUVs. The idea that someone could get from point to b with a 50 horsepower four cylinder beer can seems like an anathema to them. They think that horsepower fetishism will survive peak oil by the use of hybrids or bio-diesel.
Kunstler fails to note what he knows. That is that there will be far fewer of us when this flame out is over. Aparently he does not dare to speak this unspeakable truth. So sorry, time to die.
What's going to wake America up?
If it takes hitting them over a head with a 2by4, then let's get one with it!
The world cannot afford the massive waste, which is the current American living arrangement.
Stick a fork into it! And soon!
