  • Today I tried to jump my bike for the first time and went straight over the handlebars twice in a row! The second time I was vertical in the "scorpion" position after smashing the front wheel into the base of the next upslope, before smashing my face in to the floor. My first thought was "is my bike okay?", followed by "am I okay?", followed by "did anybody see me?".

Brilliant video that should include the advice: sometimes it's better to be going too fast than too slow.

  • which bike has the guy

    ??do anyone know?

  • mate, it's the 2009 Giant Reign X0.

I have the bike and love it!

  • 2 wheels is the smoothest way but backwheel first looks a lot cooler.

  • @NecessaryKnowledge I find it easier to ride corners and to balance even in the air with clip-less peddles. Just my opinion, the ones with adjustable screws for grip are great.

  • @NecessaryKnowledge Most new bikes come with a "Quill" Style pedal, the ones with a cage. These are throw backs to when MTB'ers used Toe Clips. Always upgrade these to a good "Pinned" pedal straight away. Mud won't be an issue after that. All diciplines use Clipless at a certain level (eg Pro DH and Pro XC) I was making the point that with a little more effort on the climbs you'll learn easier and quicker if your on flats. I hope i've not contradicted myself with this advice.

  • PS. Being clipped in is cheating, if you ride flats you have far more natural control of your bike as you have to use technique to lift and shift your bike instead of just hauling it around with your feet. FACT!!!

  • @DANCEGASMAN its not cheating. you have more power, less fatigue, and you can go faster for more time. if it was cheating it would not be allowed in the races. I ride flats in the skate park, i ride clips on freeride and Xc bikes. I got no problem doing big airs with my clips and when i go for no footers i just dont clip myself. i have way better control on my bike, i love them. and just so you know even the BMXers use them for racing and trust me they know jumping very well!

  • @audiohugo1 It's cheating if you haven't already learned how to control your bike with just flats. I have no problem with clips, they're just not great for beginners is all. BMX racing is quite different, smooth tracks, lipped jumps. You don't really have to jump a jump as such, you can just roll and control using your body weight. I'm talking about bunny hopping logs, lifting the back end on tight switch backs etc etc. Remember that i'm addressing this to beginners not folk like you

  • I hate the Internet, people trying to tell you what to buy, how to buy, what to do, how to do........etc etc Just go and ride your bike, fall off, ride some more. If you need to be shown by a video how to do drops, you shouldn't be doing them! Trial and error is the way!!!

  • get a full face helmet ,stupid fuck...

  • @McMinnManiac why are you afraid you are not abke to kiss him bitch! live and let live asshole

  • @audiohugo1 Good one ,still think a helmet is a good idea ,i like my teeth .I've fallen flat on my face in a rock garden and enjoyed the luxury of using a helmet ...and keeping my teeth ..fuck ,yeah!

  • If you get good with clipless it should be very easy to unclip in a tight spot

  • "You want flat pedals, you don't wanna be clipped in, in case you fall and get tangled with your bike" - what are they, ski bindings?

  • @elwoodjoey88 They are clips on your pedals and special shoes that attach to them to keep your feet on the pedals. They are used a lot in BMX racing and in some trail riding

  • good thing they put that arrow at the end...i wasnt sure what STEP DOWN meant :P

and i just J hop if im going to slow other wise just pull up enough so you dont nose dive....speed is key otherwise pull up alot

  • bla bla bla bla and no jump ,gay

  • i wear no gear, and i only mess up crossing gravel :L

  • Giant Reign X1, I love mine

  • r the full faced helmets that some ppl whear baisically dirtbike helmets??

  • @xxdestroyerrxx they haven't got any padding and they're a lot lighter

  • I find the best thing to do is Just Do It.

  • In this video it looks so simple, as a everyday commuter on a road bike it looks terrifying!

  • Nice vid... awesome! But! In the last piece you are using a different technique... you aren't dropping off like the first one which could make people think it's the same. You are effectivly hopping off the top in the second (gap) drop. This is the combenation of two techniques... Drop and Hop. So highlight this next time :)

  • thumbs up if you ride a huffy!

  • @yayafizzle huffy sucks

  • Where is this??

  • thank you so much!

  • How do you know what speed you're supposed to be at?

  • @mtbrogue88 i don't know how, you just... know it! you imagine the distance the bike is gonna travel in the air... you feel it's gonna be safe(if it is goinna be) a split-second before the jump

  • great tutorial

  • good tutorial but do not agree with start on a 2 to 3 foot drop. Curb height is the starting point. Make sure you can pop the front wheel.

  • i go more along the lines of flat out and that usually works for me but im more urban style

  • what do u suggest for a big wooden drop with a slgith gap inbetween the landing and about a few seconds of air time .. or more maybe 3-4 seconds XD? im scare to take it but i wanna ride the trail :S

  • @xXUndeadShadow166Xx flat out

  • so by leaning backwards i prevent myself from landing on the front wheel and flipping over as i land right??

  • @sukiwooty Sort of. You need to lean back just a bit in a controlled manner. This allows your rear wheel to make contact first and the front wheel immediately follows OR both wheels hit at the same time. It is definitely better to have the rear wheel hit a bit before the front than the other way around. On the flip side, if you lean back too far, you could flip it backwards. You just need to find the happy median in between and be comfortable and confident on the bike. Be safe!

  • @champagnehyu Cheers~

  • I think that clipedals are harder to ride with because if you crash it takes longer to drop the bike

  • @The199lives duah

  • i learn this whit a homemade ramp thats really funny :)

  • so whats wrong with using clipless. i think it makes riding more fun and you have more control

  • Where is this?

  • i have a question, why a lot of people that bike, use helms like him in the video, (see at 1:46), if they dont protec all your face, i mean, why not use full helmets

  • funny because "PROTEC" how you spelled it is the brand that makes alot of those helmets lol

  • ...........

  • ~ Excellent tutorial. ~

  • hmm, thats a slopestyle bike ... right?

  • The suspension of your bike also matters, I think. I have two full suspension bikes, one is an '03ish Giant cross country with maybe 4 inches of travel, landing on that has quite alot of rebound to help throw you off your bike. On the other hand I also have an '03 Sepcialized Bighit, that rigs got close to 10 inches and adjustable rebound. I feel very secure landing on that bike because of not having that extra bounce.

Also, these videos are nice to see, many small things to help out any rider

  • i was wondering could you bunny hop off the cliff and land with the landing???

  • Obviously you can bunny hop off a drop, youd just land farther down the hill.

  • it could also be a better transition because of the rebound that the tires give after u land, possibly?

  • I thought that landing rear wheel first wasn't as hard on your bike or you. But if there is a down slope try and get both wheels

  • I heard a few airsoft rifle shots, during the last part of this vid.

  • Very helpful videos. Thx.

    Keep on doing :)

  • Thank you.

I watched a lot of videos but they always seem to land rear wheel first. Any comments on that?

  • love your tutorials guys....! just wish i can do them just as shown *real quick* :)

  • like a gust of wind would blow you off when doing drop offs...but otherwise quite helpful for the bigginers

  • Excellent videos man! Very helpful! To bad I don't have any nice european trails to ride...

  • MTB essential techniques #1...never think about the many possible ways to wreck. Clip in your pedals if you want to. If you don't your feet could simply slip off the pedals causing you to wreck from the very beginning of the drop.

  • Yeah, I definitely feel more comfortable when I'm clipped in. Slipping off the pedals is never a good thing...

  • I'd echo that - a coupla years ago I would have agreed with him, but now I feel like a crash would be more likely if I slipped off the pedals. Suppose clipless is still a matter of preference, but all the top XC riders I know ride off this stuff all the time and wouldn't dream of doing it "footloose".

  • your talkin about those shoes that clip into the pedals right? you think you need them? wouldn't it be bad if you loose balance or something else going down a hill? I mean you crash fast I dont wanna risk not unclipping in time

  • Yeah those - well, I don't know about "needing" them - I guess it's more to do with habit. I actually ride XC mostly and they are definitely useful there, couldn't ride without them. When you crash though, you don't need to clip out, you usually get thrown out anyway! It's landing hard without being clipped in that I don't like the idea of! So I guess it's taste!

  • how many bikes does this guy have?

  • he is pro he is sponsered so as many ashe wants probably
