Today I tried to jump my bike for the first time and went straight over the handlebars twice in a row! The second time I was vertical in the "scorpion" position after smashing the front wheel into the base of the next upslope, before smashing my face in to the floor. My first thought was "is my bike okay?", followed by "am I okay?", followed by "did anybody see me?".
Brilliant video that should include the advice: sometimes it's better to be going too fast than too slow.
@NecessaryKnowledge I find it easier to ride corners and to balance even in the air with clip-less peddles. Just my opinion, the ones with adjustable screws for grip are great.
@NecessaryKnowledge Most new bikes come with a "Quill" Style pedal, the ones with a cage. These are throw backs to when MTB'ers used Toe Clips. Always upgrade these to a good "Pinned" pedal straight away. Mud won't be an issue after that. All diciplines use Clipless at a certain level (eg Pro DH and Pro XC) I was making the point that with a little more effort on the climbs you'll learn easier and quicker if your on flats. I hope i've not contradicted myself with this advice.
PS. Being clipped in is cheating, if you ride flats you have far more natural control of your bike as you have to use technique to lift and shift your bike instead of just hauling it around with your feet. FACT!!!
@DANCEGASMAN its not cheating. you have more power, less fatigue, and you can go faster for more time. if it was cheating it would not be allowed in the races. I ride flats in the skate park, i ride clips on freeride and Xc bikes. I got no problem doing big airs with my clips and when i go for no footers i just dont clip myself. i have way better control on my bike, i love them. and just so you know even the BMXers use them for racing and trust me they know jumping very well!
@audiohugo1 It's cheating if you haven't already learned how to control your bike with just flats. I have no problem with clips, they're just not great for beginners is all. BMX racing is quite different, smooth tracks, lipped jumps. You don't really have to jump a jump as such, you can just roll and control using your body weight. I'm talking about bunny hopping logs, lifting the back end on tight switch backs etc etc. Remember that i'm addressing this to beginners not folk like you
I hate the Internet, people trying to tell you what to buy, how to buy, what to do, how to do........etc etc Just go and ride your bike, fall off, ride some more. If you need to be shown by a video how to do drops, you shouldn't be doing them! Trial and error is the way!!!
@audiohugo1 Good one ,still think a helmet is a good idea ,i like my teeth .I've fallen flat on my face in a rock garden and enjoyed the luxury of using a helmet ...and keeping my teeth ..fuck ,yeah!
@elwoodjoey88 They are clips on your pedals and special shoes that attach to them to keep your feet on the pedals. They are used a lot in BMX racing and in some trail riding
Nice vid... awesome! But! In the last piece you are using a different technique... you aren't dropping off like the first one which could make people think it's the same. You are effectivly hopping off the top in the second (gap) drop. This is the combenation of two techniques... Drop and Hop. So highlight this next time :)
@mtbrogue88 i don't know how, you just... know it! you imagine the distance the bike is gonna travel in the air... you feel it's gonna be safe(if it is goinna be) a split-second before the jump
what do u suggest for a big wooden drop with a slgith gap inbetween the landing and about a few seconds of air time .. or more maybe 3-4 seconds XD? im scare to take it but i wanna ride the trail :S
@sukiwooty Sort of. You need to lean back just a bit in a controlled manner. This allows your rear wheel to make contact first and the front wheel immediately follows OR both wheels hit at the same time. It is definitely better to have the rear wheel hit a bit before the front than the other way around. On the flip side, if you lean back too far, you could flip it backwards. You just need to find the happy median in between and be comfortable and confident on the bike. Be safe!
i have a question, why a lot of people that bike, use helms like him in the video, (see at 1:46), if they dont protec all your face, i mean, why not use full helmets
The suspension of your bike also matters, I think. I have two full suspension bikes, one is an '03ish Giant cross country with maybe 4 inches of travel, landing on that has quite alot of rebound to help throw you off your bike. On the other hand I also have an '03 Sepcialized Bighit, that rigs got close to 10 inches and adjustable rebound. I feel very secure landing on that bike because of not having that extra bounce.
Also, these videos are nice to see, many small things to help out any rider
MTB essential techniques #1...never think about the many possible ways to wreck. Clip in your pedals if you want to. If you don't your feet could simply slip off the pedals causing you to wreck from the very beginning of the drop.
I'd echo that - a coupla years ago I would have agreed with him, but now I feel like a crash would be more likely if I slipped off the pedals. Suppose clipless is still a matter of preference, but all the top XC riders I know ride off this stuff all the time and wouldn't dream of doing it "footloose".
your talkin about those shoes that clip into the pedals right? you think you need them? wouldn't it be bad if you loose balance or something else going down a hill? I mean you crash fast I dont wanna risk not unclipping in time
Yeah those - well, I don't know about "needing" them - I guess it's more to do with habit. I actually ride XC mostly and they are definitely useful there, couldn't ride without them. When you crash though, you don't need to clip out, you usually get thrown out anyway! It's landing hard without being clipped in that I don't like the idea of! So I guess it's taste!

good tutorial but do not agree with start on a 2 to 3 foot drop. Curb height is the starting point. Make sure you can pop the front wheel.

i was wondering could you bunny hop off the cliff and land with the landing???
compton1904 2 years ago
Obviously you can bunny hop off a drop, youd just land farther down the hill.
Hughbhurt 2 years ago
it could also be a better transition because of the rebound that the tires give after u land, possibly?
kona1169 2 years ago
I thought that landing rear wheel first wasn't as hard on your bike or you. But if there is a down slope try and get both wheels
