Ian's voice was in topform this night. His voice was better in the 90's in some ways. He really struggled with the voice during the 80's, after he had that throat surgery in 1982.
A shame no proper official Live videos of Deep Purple in the reunion years during the 80's have been released. There are NO pro-shot stuff from 1987-88, and the worst concert they did on the 'Perfect Strangers' tour in Paris, 1985 is pro-shot, but they didn't do 'Child In Time' etc. on that one, plus Ian Gillan had a cold, and Blackmore was in his dark place and played bad that night. My dream would be to see a pro-shot performance of 'Unwritten Law'.
From what I've read, when Gillan was sober and focused he and RB got along great...trouble was, Ian G. was never sober or focused long enough, and he ruined his voice with booze which drove RB mad. RB is / was a perfectionist who expected the other guys in the band to have his same dedication and drive. Guess it just wasn't to be. Pity too...great, tight band.
Heard this show was filmed. I have a tape of it, and it was a goodie. Strangely, though, Blackmore had been arrested at the same venue in '77 - almost exactly 10 years before - for beating up a violent bouncer. We must assume that bouncer had left Vienna Stadhalle by the time Purple did this show. :)

Wow, Gillan and Blackmore are getting on almost well enough to look at each other in this clip. Amazing. Where did it all go wrong...
Thanks for the clip - great times.
