@MikuMochi actually the Eponine from the 25th is going to play eponine in the movies!! Apparently after a performance someone came out and announced that she was going to play it!!!!!!!! :D
I'm really sorry for bothering you but I really hope you can check out my cover of this wonderful song. It would really mean a lot to me since I used this song for a contest which I didn't win. I was just hoping for another chance here in Youtube. Thank you very much.
There was only one problem with Lea in the role of Eponine in Les Mis... No man in his right mind would have ever picked another woman over her. She's unmatched.
I have never been more ecstatic that some did not get a role in a film then I was when I found out that Taylor Swift was not playing Eponine. There is not a redeeming quality about her voice/acting and she would have ruined the role. Kudos to Cameron McIntosh and his crew for realizing that this would have sunk the film!
WTF?!?! I love Taylor Swift but........ r u kiddding me !!!!! Great why dont we just ruin the sancitity that is musical theather. But if she ends up suprising us then brava.
Eponine remembered that as a child in the inn, her parents would let her baby brother scream for hours until he fell asleep from exhaustion. As soon as Cosette had been 'bought' and taken away, her parents didn't have the scapegoat to blame everything on, so it was Eponine's turn. The worst nights were when her father had been drinking and then completely lost every mortal fiber he had. Azelma had spent many nights tending to the wounds that Eponine received as a result.
Lea Salonga and Frances Rufelle were two great artists who attacked the role of eponine (musical) in different yet impeccable way. I hope the producers see how important it is to cast the best in each role esp. that of eponine. If you're an avid les miz follower, you know what i'm saying!
My mum used to be the understudy Eponine and she was singing with the chorus of singers at the back, as soon as the concert ended she went to the hospital and i was born, so i was at this concert lol :P
i actually would have not gone with taylor of lea michele ( as much as i love her and she is clearly much more suitable for eponine, considering she actuall play eponine in the hollywood bowl) i thin evan rachel wood would have been perfect. absolutly perfect.

I hate lea as eponine! She looks the part but thats it, her acting of the part is far too serious! She should have been told that diction for the song is barely worth working on because thats what ruined the song on her! Far too sharp! It doesnt flow! It makes it sound emotionless!
@eponine316 lol, study eponine's character. Then feel her emotions. It's called character interpretation, diff actors have diff view of their characters. But still they are able to pull it off perfectly. Like judy Garland and Danielle Hope, they both sang 'somewhere over the rainbow' w/ diff emotions, but they presented the character perfectly with it.
@eponine316 as if you knew better than Claude-Michel Schönberg for picking Lea to do the role..LOL !!! & also nobody questions a Tony award winner regarding of the way he/she acts !!!!
How can Taylor Swift even compare to THIS? I like Taylor as a country-pop singer, but I don't think she has enough singing chops to even pull this of.
I can't believe Taylor Swift is going to play Eponine. Absoloutley disgusting. They're just piling a bunch of famous names together to make the movie well heard of. I hate it. There are so many talented people that deserve the part of Eponine, that could do this big part justice. Instead, Taylor Swift is taking a huge dump on the name of Broadway, because WOW! That looks totes fun!
@MikuMochi well, before the movie comes out, you are just a whiny bitch. at least she's got the talents. do you??? or you just spend your life hating on ppl?
@MikuMochi they dont need a 'bunch of famous names' to pull the people. "Les Miserables" is enough, 'bunch of people' will naturally be attracted to the movie. Though i agree, taylor, with her voice, will not be able to grasp eponine's emotion
@MikuMochi I couldn't agree with you more and I'm a Taylor Swift fan. If they were desprate to cast somebody famous Lea Michele should have been chosen but I think that they would have been casting someone who was'nt as famous whos on the westend or broadway!
@MikuMochi I know it's disgraceful... I used to be a Taylor Swift fan and I do like some of her songs but the girl cannot sing live. She can't even hit the notes in her own songs let alone sing this.
@MikuMochi Thankfully Samantha Barks got the role instead, at least she has had some experience playing Eponine unlike Taylor Swift and I love Sammy Barks. Now we just need Lea Salonga playing Fantine instead of Anne Hathaway and it will be perfect x
@MikuMochi They are no longer hiring Taylor Swift, it is now going to be Samatha Barks from the 25th anniversary. Super excited the cast soudns great! Although personally I would have cast Hugh Jackman as Javert and Russel Crowe as Valjean, Hugh looks great in sideburns. ;)
Her voice is amazing amd really fits... But I just can't watch her in this performance, nothing wrong with her looks but the way she moves her mouth... I guess it's to maximize her voice, to make it clearer, though in the 25th ani she is much more natural. An extra 15 years of experience might do that I suppose.
her voice is so sharp and light but deep and clear at the same time. her vibrato is to die for. I just love lea and her God given talent. (: So proud.
Eternal voice of Ms. Lea Salonga made her Eponine a unique and distinctive interpretation, so much so that she made the role her own version, despite being Asian and a specific clause in her contract for her to stay " white as possible" during the run!

she's definitely a brilliant singer and has a big range and everything, but she left out words or cut them off short. i think that each woman who plays Eponine brings their own style and version to the part, but I think my favorite is Lea Michele's by far.
This is a wonderful song, really difficult to sing with the correct amount of emotion and anger, and in my opinion, Lea does the best perfomance of it.
Of course there are some other great singers who interpretate this song wonderfully, but let's face it, LEA IS HUGE.
I think people's passion over who is the best Eponine only shows how wonderful and personal this material is. Lea may now be too old, Ruffelle may not have been the strongest singer and Samantha may be slightly 'pop'y. I believe this displays how after 25 years, les mis is continuing to grow and move into a new generation. Victor Hugo's novel has existed for 150 years, of course it's been changed for the musical. Why cant the performances adapt as well? There can be more than one good Eponine:)
Apart from the angelic voice, I love how she doesn't try to sell Eponine's sadness so hard. Her acting is more subtle and she doesn't try to shove it in the audience's face.
I'm seriously crying right now. :') I seriously love her. I'm a proud Filipina like her. :) I am 16 and regretting I haven't watch any of her live performance but I'm hoping someday I will. :D
I love how you can tell how dedicated she is just by looking at her mouth. Both as Fantine and as Eponine, Lea Salonga always makes these weird contortions with her lips that almost (ALMOST) make her look absolutely ridiculous, but neither she nor anybody else cares about this because it's half the reason her tone is so lovely. Puckering your lips like that helps project the sound (it's the reason trumpets and trombones have the bell) but singers sometimes don't because it looks weird. Go Lea!
@ihartrodatkins I don't know. It's a mystery. But there's a group, not many, who criticize her for "over enunciating". It's just one of many complaints they use to criticize her. I suspect they're all FR fans. After the 25th Anniversary, the RH fans came out and chastised her performance. As with the FR fans, they were few. The fact remains that she was brilliant in both concerts. I would even say her performance was/is the best in both concerts. Peace...
@H1delta "over enunciating"what rubbish. I know that I just can't stand not having to look up the lyrics after I hear a piece of music, don't you. Next , they will criticize artists for being too much on key,in time, and only singing the notes that the composer wrote, and not adding all of the little triplet runs that ruin so many songs.
@bensdadfrank These are probably the same people who are not aware that most of their favorite singers use autotune. BTW, she was 24 when she performed this song & in my humble opinion, her voice at this age was at its most powerful & best. Her voice at 17 & 18 (Miss Saigon) was/is angelic. & still today, her Sun & Moon audition when she was 17 with Schonberg at the piano is my favorite & her follow up solo of The Movie In My Mind is still the best rendition of that song. Blessings be upon you.
Very nice and gentle:-) I found this song in the Czech language and i think, that the interpretation is great - I would like to know your opinions - Lucie Bílá - Píseň samotářky [On My Own] (10.května 1996) - thanks.
@sandyrass1 DUH. That "top note" wasn't -- and isn't -- part of the libretto. It's what POP singers do and when they're the ones that play the role, they ruin the song with their amateurish "look-how-I-sing-this-note-so-give-me-your-attention" approach!
@jayemefff yup she did played mulan's singing voice both mulan 1 & 2. She also played tuptim in the king and I alongside Julie Andrews and Ben kingsley.
this is the "DREAM CAST".......................so it means ONLY THE BEST are cast here........ which ALSO means LEA SALONGA is the DREAM EPONINE of the PRODUCERS ^,^.......................... I have seen LOOTTSSS OF VERSIONS of this song from different "Eponines"............ but SAD TO SAY......they're JUST performing..... as PLAIN as that.....I have found Eponine's "HEART and SOUL" ONLY from LEA SALONGA......VERY EFFECTIVE EPONINE!!!
The best interpretation of the role (strong and upset, versus Ruffelle's weak, whiny Eponine with the speech defect) and hands-down the best vocal performance of the song. It's no wonder that the producers themselves picked Lea Salonga as THE Dream Eponine.
Sorry, Frances is. Lea is technically sound but sorry she doesn't sell the emotion of Eponine on the stage. Frances was Eponine and Samantha was Eponine, Lea is Lea. You can see it and ear it. It's safe and void of any embellishment, cracks from the voice and the heart of someone in agony. Sorry it's a perfect technical studio performance but they are stage actors as well as singers.
for me its like comparing a lamborghini to a ferrari, there both so amazing, but I like the 25th a touch better. Alfie Boe, and Samantha Barks did amazing job.
POP singer Samantha Barks, who changed the melodies of several lines so all the attention would be on HER, rather than the character, is a screechy beginner who hasn't developed the nuances of acting and the sophistication of theatrical singing. She's too much of an amateur for people with trained ears to be even compared to Salonga.
I've been listening to Samantha Barks, but everyone said that Lea is better, so I came to see what the hype was about. I don't like the way she pronounces basically everything in such a precise and American way. Plus, Samantha is the only person I've seen that sing "All my life, I've only been pretending," the way that she does. It's much more powerful that way, and I also don't feel Lea got the right amount of power in the "That I have never known," line. I don't understand why she is "better."
@bridabom73 Samantha needs to be better than Frances Ruffelle (a great actress and the original Eponine) first before she even dreams of reaching Salonga's caliber.
Plus the orchestra definitely does NOT overpower her. In fact, she caps it off beautifully with the soft attack after that powerful "I have ever known" line.
@WickedProductions100 Oh, you mean send those SQUEAKY wrse-than-Idina-Menzel-Elphabas with the ugly, zero-quality voices and inadequate acting skills to take over the legendary Salonga?
@aldrinhu Well seeing as Kerry and Rachel wouldn't need to use head voice at the end, I wouldn't mind. Anyway, to each his own with voices. Lea's voice is gorgeous, but the 70 piece orchestra starts drowning her voice a bit.
@WickedProductions100 Um, no one used a head tone here. KerryWho(TM) and RachelWho(TM) would have benefited from using their head tones on Wicked, however, so that they didn't have to scream their annoying, screechy voices out in that very squeaky musical.
@aldrinhu I second that. Not only are EllisWho? and TuckerWho? virtually unknown, their annoying voices are no match to Salonga's powerful and crystal-clear voice. If this were a screeching competition, yeah, the producers should get them.
guys don't worry, samantha barks is playing eponine... lea salonga is amazing :)

JulieLaughingSoHard 4 months ago 7
Apart from the angelic voice, I love how she doesn't try to sell Eponine's sadness so hard. Her acting is more subtle and she doesn't try to shove it in the audience's face.

I'm seriously crying right now. :') I seriously love her. I'm a proud Filipina like her. :) I am 16 and regretting I haven't watch any of her live performance but I'm hoping someday I will. :D

I love Lea Salonga so much! Her voice is stunning and she really makes you believe that she IS Eponine!

a perfect voice

I love how you can tell how dedicated she is just by looking at her mouth. Both as Fantine and as Eponine, Lea Salonga always makes these weird contortions with her lips that almost (ALMOST) make her look absolutely ridiculous, but neither she nor anybody else cares about this because it's half the reason her tone is so lovely. Puckering your lips like that helps project the sound (it's the reason trumpets and trombones have the bell) but singers sometimes don't because it looks weird. Go Lea!

@ihartrodatkins Shhhh. You'll wake the "she over enunciates" crowd.
H1delta 4 months ago
@H1delta ...
how do you over enunciate in musical theatre?! o.O
ihartrodatkins 4 months ago 6
@ihartrodatkins I don't know. It's a mystery. But there's a group, not many, who criticize her for "over enunciating". It's just one of many complaints they use to criticize her. I suspect they're all FR fans. After the 25th Anniversary, the RH fans came out and chastised her performance. As with the FR fans, they were few. The fact remains that she was brilliant in both concerts. I would even say her performance was/is the best in both concerts. Peace...
H1delta 4 months ago
@H1delta "over enunciating"what rubbish. I know that I just can't stand not having to look up the lyrics after I hear a piece of music, don't you. Next , they will criticize artists for being too much on key,in time, and only singing the notes that the composer wrote, and not adding all of the little triplet runs that ruin so many songs.
bensdadfrank 3 months ago 4
@bensdadfrank These are probably the same people who are not aware that most of their favorite singers use autotune. BTW, she was 24 when she performed this song & in my humble opinion, her voice at this age was at its most powerful & best. Her voice at 17 & 18 (Miss Saigon) was/is angelic. & still today, her Sun & Moon audition when she was 17 with Schonberg at the piano is my favorite & her follow up solo of The Movie In My Mind is still the best rendition of that song. Blessings be upon you.
H1delta 3 months ago
@H1delta Best Eponine that I.ve ever heard! Bless you too! Peace.

Very nice and gentle:-) I found this song in the Czech language and i think, that the interpretation is great - I would like to know your opinions - Lucie Bílá - Píseň samotářky [On My Own] (10.května 1996) - thanks.

why didnt she do the top note on "pretending"??? for that reason alone i prefer Linzi
sandyrass1 5 months ago
@sandyrass1 DUH. That "top note" wasn't -- and isn't -- part of the libretto. It's what POP singers do and when they're the ones that play the role, they ruin the song with their amateurish "look-how-I-sing-this-note-so-give-me-your-attention" approach!

@Sibzist Um...Lea played Jasmine. Not Mulan.

@jayemefff Before you make a stupid comment like that you should do your research. Lea Salonga was the singing voice for Mulan as well as Jasmine.

Um, guys, there are other Eponines in this world besides Sam, Lea and Frances.

this is the "DREAM CAST".......................so it means ONLY THE BEST are cast here........ which ALSO means LEA SALONGA is the DREAM EPONINE of the PRODUCERS ^,^.......................... I have seen LOOTTSSS OF VERSIONS of this song from different "Eponines"............ but SAD TO SAY......they're JUST performing..... as PLAIN as that.....I have found Eponine's "HEART and SOUL" ONLY from LEA SALONGA......VERY EFFECTIVE EPONINE!!!

sailor4991 5 months ago 6

PantherFUCKING420 5 months ago
not to be picky, but couldn't they light her face without getting a shadow from the mic ?

she will be the irreplaceable Eponine, she owns this character!

for me its like comparing a lamborghini to a ferrari, there both so amazing, but I like the 25th a touch better. Alfie Boe, and Samantha Barks did amazing job.
hossgriff55 6 months ago

I don't understand why she is "better."
bridabom73 6 months ago
@bridabom73 Samantha needs to be better than Frances Ruffelle (a great actress and the original Eponine) first before she even dreams of reaching Salonga's caliber.

Plus the orchestra definitely does NOT overpower her. In fact, she caps it off beautifully with the soft attack after that powerful "I have ever known" line.

She needs more power at the end. The orchestra takes over. Up her microphone or send in Kerry Ellis or Rachel Tucker or something.
WickedProductions100 6 months ago
@WickedProductions100 Oh, you mean send those SQUEAKY wrse-than-Idina-Menzel-Elphabas with the ugly, zero-quality voices and inadequate acting skills to take over the legendary Salonga?
aldrinhu 6 months ago 3
This has been flagged as spam show
@aldrinhu Well seeing as Kerry and Rachel wouldn't need to use head voice at the end, I wouldn't mind. Anyway, to each his own with voices. Lea's voice is gorgeous, but the 70 piece orchestra starts drowning her voice a bit.
WickedProductions100 6 months ago
@WickedProductions100 Um, no one used a head tone here. KerryWho(TM) and RachelWho(TM) would have benefited from using their head tones on Wicked, however, so that they didn't have to scream their annoying, screechy voices out in that very squeaky musical.
aaprato 6 months ago
@aldrinhu I second that. Not only are EllisWho? and TuckerWho? virtually unknown, their annoying voices are no match to Salonga's powerful and crystal-clear voice. If this were a screeching competition, yeah, the producers should get them.
jgardell 6 months ago 5
@WickedProductions100 lol . .. . u should blame the technicians then . . . they're fault not adjusting her mic's volume up in the end :)
