I really liked Emily Hampshire's character. Such a bummer that character died early in the movie. but then, the rest of the movie wouldn't have happened otherwise...
I don't know if you're still checking back, but I hope you will see this. I want to thank you for writing this story. I recognized a lot of the things happening in the movie and the things said; it was all so true and sincere. It made me remember and be grateful for some beautiful moments I experienced.
To me, they're all people and the sweetest kind.
I know this is a cryptic message, but I can't reveal all in a tiny box.
Just know that you're heard and that you moved people, including me.
The question that the journalist was stupid. Few people know this, because Alan Rickman is very discreet, but that he indicated Sigourney for the role of Linda. When he read script he realized that the role would be perfect for her and the result was really fantastic. Beautiful movie, beautiful story of friendship.
What a rude DHEAD of a reporter. Alan Rickman doesn't mean to be a scene-stealer, gosh. No seriously, that was so rude. Alan handled it very well - oh, he's the best.
Apart from that ridiculously rude question (very gracely *not* answered by Rickman) I liked one question: about the acting with (or "against") the character of Linda, commented by Sigourney Weaver. I think it must be hard, because the character does not respond the way you expect. It's like acting in an empty space for Rickman, and suddenly, on a much later moment, the Alex character does get a response. Great acting, on all accounts. And it makes you think about where you are on the spectrum.
This is why I love Alan-just look at the calm way he smooths over that rude reporter's question about stealing away the screen and stuff. The expression was priceless!!
That's OK, I've been searching for this too and figured there'd be many others who have not seen this either. Haha it was a funny question (I guess they haven't seen Alan in films beyond Harry Potter, Robin Hood and Die Hard) with a very humble answer - it's no wonder I adore him :)
It's been a LONG time since I've looked up Snow Cake on Youtube - and this was my first ever press conference ( a BANK of tv cameras and journalists) and for someone who is mainly 'a mum' and not accostomed to any limelight... I was totally terrified. (I'm the one on the far left!). I also didn't have the wherewithal to start my comment about finding autism 'a lot of fun' with 'in my experience'... and upset a number of parents -for which I apologise. x
Well hello, Ms. Pell, thank you for commenting :) I think you handled the whole ordeal brillantly! You did look nervous but honestly, who could blame you? It's a tough situation to be in and in hindsight, we always wish we could've said something differently. I've never had contact with autistic people but I don't believe life with them is all doom and gloom so the parents you upset probably misinterpreted it as saying life with an autistic is easy.
And I have to thank you for writing such a warm and uplifting story, you are a very talented lady! I know a lot of people who would not normally see such a film but have been pleasantly surprised by the experience and even become a favourite film of theirs.
Are you working on any more screenplays at the moment or are you just enjoying life as a mum?
thank you so much for your comments - I really appreciate them. You are probably right about the 'easy' thing. And yes, I have about four other projects on the go. (mostly though, I'd rather be bouncing with my son!!). Anyway, I'm so glad you enjoyed Snow Cake. Thanks again x
Snow Cake is one of my favorite movies ever. I think that it is such a beautiful script and you did an amazing job on it. It must have been wonderful working with Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver. Sigourney Weaver is my favorite actress and I have seen over 20 of her films, but Snow Cake is absolutley in my top 10! Alan and Sigourney really work great together in this film, and in Galaxy Quest. Well, I just wanted to thank you for giving the world this incredible film.
Thank you! It was indeed a privalege (oh god - no Spell Check here and my spelling is appauling) and a pleasure to work with both Alan and Sigourney.. an amazing experience. I spent a week holed up in an office in Cananda with them. Quite daunting for a new writer - although it was also the first time I'd ever left my son... seven years to cut the umblical chord (!) - so coming to terms with that, I think, preocupied me slightly more so! Thankyou again for your lovely comments. Keep dancing! x
Wow, 4?! You are busy lol. Do they also deal with the subject of autism? I hope they're going well and will make it to the big screen soon, and your son is not missing out on too much bouncing time :)
I hope you don't mind answering a question of mine? As Alan Rickman said (with his perplexed look), you wrote the character of Alex with him in mind, was there any particular reason for this and were you quite confident that he would say 'yes'? Can you spill the beans on what he's like in real life? :p And what was the feeling of seeing your first film on the silver screen? It must've been awesome!
Mr Rickman was everything I'm sure fans of his suspect... committed, professional, passionate and very, very dry! I learnt a great deal about both the writing, and acting process from him. And no - I was astounded that the script even got sent to him - let alone him agreeing to do it. After YEARS of rejection letters, I had no absolutely idea anyone would want to actually try and get this film made! And seeing the first rushes was - as you say - awesome. x
Sorry I haven't checked messages in aggggeesss and forgot to say thank you again for answering my questions. It is great to hear that Alan is not only a wonderful actor but also a highly respectable person. Oh and I heard the great news that Snow Cake will be re-released in September. I don't know how it all works but it's a good sign, right? ;) Good luck for all your future projects!
You're welcome, I found it very interesting to learn more about the film and it's too good not to share :) I'm having some problems capturing the last 10 minutes of the video but will upload part 3 as soon as it's fixed!
"from somewhere deep in my gut, i do not understand you question" Gere we go, Alan as a perfect gentleman and intellecutal! Gotta love that!
