They should definitely release a version of the film with the rejected score in it, because I think the movie would have benefited from it more than Horner's score, which felt more rushed and recycled.
mmm i like the other song better (if im right Horners ver), this one to me didnt fit the fight scene that was clearly a one sided fight, when hector gets killed and is being dragged around the women thats singing (Horners ver) matches it perfect as dark sad FUCK YO COUCH disrespect mood
Without hearing and seeing Yared's score properly mixed with the visuals and sound effects, it's hard to make a definitive choice on which is better... one of the complaints levelled at Yared's score was that it was too grand to compliment the visuals. Perhaps the real problem was that the visuals were not grand enough to hold the music... which comes first, the score or the visuals? In this case, Yared's score was started months before any filming – perhaps he should have waited to see it!
i think ur editing is slightly off. i like this music from yared better than Horner's in this scene, but Yared's score was atrocious in other scenes. Horner did a great job with the time he was given to write and record a replacement score. the fight between Patroclus and Hector is much better
In the extended version, this scene's music is replaced with Elfman's theme from Planet of the Apes, and a lot of Horner's score is taken out, and what's left is repeated over and over.
the solo drum by Horner is much much better. This just drowns the whole fight out, as did the version used in the D.C. version of Troy. Why would they use Danny Elfman's music instead of Horner's or even Yared's for that matter in the D.C? I never understood that.
ya im glad they rejected this score..instead of the epic fight being the main focus...it becomes nothing more than a montage...becomes passive..a big no no for a movie like this.
the mix is wrong here - the music is way too loud (can't hear the dialogue). however, i never particularly liked horner's work in this scene, and i prefer this rendition.
i think it is a matter of personal preference. maybe i am prejudiced, as i watched the movie about 5 times and am already used to horner´s score. i admit that in many scenes, i don´t like it at all. however, this duel scene is one of the rare scenes where i think horner´s score fits very well.
but of course, i am curious about yared´s score. so where can i get the complete rejected score? was there an official release?
I have nothing against Horner or his themes for Troy, the only thing I didn't like is that Horner trashed Yared's music, and that was really not nice...to spit on his colleague's work, and Yared is as talented as Horner, and has worked hard and for a long time on this...man, I really don't like that kind of attitude
this scene wasn't the best example to see the contrast. In other scenes, Yared uses a full choir (reciting verses from the Iliad, BTW) and grander orchestral themes while Horner overuses the whailing woman and his danger theme (it's very tough to miss it).
thank you shaida01 for posting this. it is amazing. the most interesting thing to me is how much the 2 scores resemble in their structure: during the duel, there is only percussion. and with the death of hector, a lament theme with a single female voice. this raises the question if james horner had heard gabriel yared´s score before he started composing his own.
however, in this specific scene, i would still prefer horner´s score. it is more subtle and less predominant as yared´s.
The two scores sound similar in many tracks, though I prefer Yared's. The lament in Horner's score makes me cringe; but the one by Yared is much more emotional and melodic.
Of course Horner heard Yared's music, I mean, Yared was working on this for a YEAR, he was doing some serious research and all, and then, cos some (stupid) test audience didn't like it, suddenly the producers switch to Horner who had 10 DAYS to compose. Horner is talented and excellent, no doubt, but 10 days...pleeeeez :-)
I've got the Yared score and I think you waited too long to incorporate his Achilles/Hector song into this video. The song should start much closer to the beginning and carry the entire fight scene.
Yeah it is tricky. I was really hoping they would have used this piece on the Director's cut instead of the music they decided to go with. I would have liked to have seen how they timed it. Nice job though I really love this song.
I think you did a pretty good job here :-) Since I didn't hear all of Yared's rejected scores, I will presume that his score starts at about 1:07, right? Well, when I listen to it, it seems to me that Horner took a lot from Yared - the drums, the wailing...changed it and incorporated into his own scores. It is obvious that Horner worked on the basis of Yared's themes. This Yared's score is very powerful and intense, I like it, thanks for posting it.
Sry, coulie27, but you are an idiot. Yared's music is much more emotional than Horner's crap, not only in this scene. Compare the opening music of the score used with Yared's original "Approach of the Greek" and you will understand immediatelly what I'm talking about.

This fight scene really doesn't fit with Homer's way of telling the story... still good though

Yared's Score is so much better for this reason: he had a year to work on it. Stupid Warner Bros.

the beginning is all from the movie like where the soft drums are heard but then it gets into this loud band drumming that wasn't very good

That's only because you're hearing a mix that wasn't finished for the final cut.

Yeah I didn't know exactly when to incorporate it. I figured it would be best that the "wailing" part started when Hector is killed.

It looks the same, but there are differences in the music. It becomes louder and more complex at about 1:30
