What a remarkable footage ! One that I've been waiting for so long . I always wonder what happened to all those US-supplied aircrafts to South Viet Nam that were abandoned after the fall of Saigon .
The Mig-29 derived from the F-5. The Soviet did like US F-5 a lot. The F-5 was better than Mig-21, Mig-23, and Mig-25 because it out turn, out run, maneuverable, and out climb. I never understand why USAF never use the F-5 in air combat over Vietnam. The F-4 phantom was too fat. The Mig-21 have a poor rear sight and poor AAM the AA-2 Atoll.
I happened to see a MiG-28 an inverted 4G negative dive, I have a great Polaroid of the MiG-28, and he's right here, must have been at least one and half meters
The Russians knew the F-5 was more maneuverable than the MiG-21 ever could hope to be. But the Soviets also knew, the Americans were not interested in using the F-5 as a fighter during VietNam only as a bomber. The Russians never did copy the F-5 because the KGB knew during that time the F-15A was already being built and they wanted that data. Before long, the MiG-29 was built looking very much like the F-15A.
@VG39 They screwed up. The MiG-23 was influenced by the F-111. In the beginning, the 23 was an attack aircraft up until the 80's was it modified to carry Air-to-Air missiles and Air-to-Air radar weapon systems. Read my comment above this one.
The F-5E was the most advanced jet the South Vietnamese ever received. In 1972 President Thieu asked for F-4s, but the US refused. But what if the VNAF had gotten those Phantoms? Could these planes have saved South Vietnam? Or would that country have fallen just the same, and its F-4s been captured and passed on to the Soviets for study?
As I understand, the VNAF lacked the ECM it needed to foil enemy missiles, leaving its planes vulnerable when the final push came in 1975.
@jp6869 Advanced jets require parts, fuel, and supplies to operate so it would be useless without those things. The Democratic control Congress wanted to punish the Nixon Administration and then Ford Administration by slashing huge chunks of aid to RVN. RVNAF received $2.2 billion in 1973 while in 75 they received $700 million and part of that amount was to pay for $150 million to operate DAO. Yeah, South Vietnam got shafted by a Democratic Congress for no purpose except to exercise power?
After receiving defecting MiG-15's, 17's, 19's, and 21's as well as an Il-28 from china by 1975 we thought we would let them have an American plane and marvel at its obvious superiority. Most of the SVAF F-5's were removed from service in 1975 and can be seen on the flightdeck of the aircraft carrier USS Midway.
I would love to see more US aircraft wearing russian stars. Is there any footage of say former Iranian F-14s or VNAF F-4's being tested by the Russians? Sukhoi must have gotten at least one F-14 to work with, the similarity of their designs is unmistakeable. They dropped the swing wing thing as it was probabally too heavy and complext to deal with.
the f-5a freedom fighter...and the f-5e tiger 2...are the older brothers of the f/a-18 hornet!...they kind of evolved...(f-21 tigershark also related but was an abortion)
5-stars...yes we always wondered who got their hands on south vietnams f-5e tiger2...(in 1975)...later in 1980-1988 red viet nam sold some to iran for gulf war vs iraq...yes we did know in the cold war that the f-5e could out dogfight most mig-21 fishbeds...so we handed hundreds out to any non-communist nations...
The Narrator said the F-5 is a good fighter, very agile, very cunning, and given the strength of the F-5 we are upgrading our current mig-21 fleet to match this aircraft
@ALEXBAB1 becus russia said NO no mig-29 in the movie and top gun said fuck it and that just put f-5s and called it mig-28 since they cant use (mig-29s) as f-5s thay called f-5s mig-28 mig-28 are not real aircrafts
a shorter sentence for the top 2 comments: THE F-5 WAS JUST A PROTOTYPE

@SilentEagles
What a Nonsense!
Soviet only Concluded that F-5 is Good only when rotate,and for Low Level/Speed Dogfight.
You said,F-5 can Out run or out Climb,Fast? Haha :P
F-5 has always been a Downgraded Export plane for allies.Becouse of that dervative of F-5,
F-20 ,is not meant to be bought by the USAF.
Comparison:Mig-21>Mig-25>Mig-29>F-5 .
Max Speed:(Mach 2.05)(Mach 3.2)(Mach 2.25)(Mach 1.6).
Rate of climb:(225m/s)(208 m/s)(330 m/s)(175 m/s).
Range:(1,210 km)(2,575 km)(2,575 km)(1405 km).

@SilentEagles
Versions A/B don't have Radar,and are very Slow(barely supersonic)and can be armed only with 2x AIM-9 :) Haha
To conclude:F-5 is Slow barely supersonic Aircraft,with insufficient capacity for Payload,
Without enough space in the nose, to accommodate Useful Radar,Aircraft with small range
(unless carrying tanks, though no weapons then) :P
and in the fight,Pilot of mig,when Bored,should only to step on gas to escape!
Mig-25 i don't need to mention,even F-15 is unable to Catch him!

It's the Mig 28! ;D

"...that gave Soviet aircraft designers a push to develop a new types, like MiG-23..."
MiG-29 yes, but not MiG-23 !
The film is from 1975 (or more), the first flight of MiG-29 is in 1977, and the one of MiG-23 was in 1967 !!

@RacerXGTO You are confusing with the MiG-27 / MiG-23BN.
From the late 60's MiG-23 was a first line fighter (fast air/air missiles carrier), altough they had difficulties to develop it till the MiG-23MLD.
I've got the OKB MiG archives...

So what if the Soviet Union have the F-5 captured in Vietnam by NVA. Hey Israel capture the Mig-21 Fishbed during Six Days War now we are even.

The VNAF didn't have any F-4, their only fighters were F-5As and F-5Es (well and A-37 for CAS).
