  • Hats off

  • So much soul....

  • This is EXCELLENT.Wonderful work for a PEERLESS song, my compliments to your taste.

  • love it-

  • I can't tell you how this song warms my insides when I hear it. No one sings it like Brook Benton. My husband was stationed at Fort Benning Ga. in 1969 and were in Ga for the summer. It brings back those memories of the rain storms we would get down there. They were amazing!

  • I love this song too @Gotch09.

Its an infamous classic! Beautifully song by Brook! So many great

artist gone too soon. R.I.P. Brook

  • This is the kind of song you just sit and chill with that special someone relaxin!

  • Memories of living in Savannah and hearing this song wafting out of the shops on rainy nights when you're walking down the street with a drink in one hand, your lady's hand in the other

  • LOVE IT,. BRINGS BACK MEMORIES

  • The early Sam Vooke albums are more lounge music than soul... but this man when he sings HE SINGS

  • Yes I agree this is the best version. What a smooth song and a smooth vocal delivery.A classic.

  • Awesome i love it

  • itsa rainy night in guelph ontario canada... and it seems like it's raining all over the world :)

    excellent post ㋡✌

  • great song remembering blue heaven (sp) little red yes rod 'sit me thank for the post

  • June of 1980. I was a teenage runaway making my way through Georgia headed to Florida from NY down US 25 outside of Augusta. A kindly old gentleman who looked like Col Sanders offered me a ride as far as Savannah, then put me up in a motel for the night, no questions asked. Never got his name .

  • Vietnam War...I remember this song...the harmonica is so sweet.

  • One of the greatest singers to ever step in front of a Mic.. ABsolutely no question.

The man was genius... and he had the sweetest tone ever. A lot of folks have

covered this tune.. but no one will EVER top this version !!!

The sweet guitar by Cornell Dupree doesn't hurt either. And the arrangement is

    PERfect.!!!

  • @timjmoran If milk and honey could talk--this is what it would sound like.

  • @gotch09 What would a peach say? Would it sound like this peach state song, or would it sound more like Annoying Orange? I love this song. Too bad other songs got more play over the years than this song.

  • @kodachromefilm I'll just stick to the milk and honey theory.

  • @gotch09 LOL. Forgive me. It's late at night.

  • @kodachromefilm Well if your in Georgia, it's either awfully late or terribly early. What-a little after 4 a.m.?

  • When it's pouring outside like tonight, I turn off all the lights, curl up under a blanket and play this while the lightning flashes and the thunder booms outside. Sends chills down my spine every time.

i can't ever imagine anyone else singing this. What a magnificent voice!

  • I guess Millie Jackson may have been too long in such a rainy night! Great.

  • damn that's a beautiful record

  • This reminds me of my step-father who was from Ga. He came to Albany,NY. I wished we lived in Alb, Ga. that way we could all be in Ga. & Alb at the same time. That was a mind of a10 yr. old. I love this song like the 1st time I heard it. He's since passed.

    R.I.P. Arcell

  • strong song.

  • One of my favorite songs of all time (and I'm 56). I'll ONLY listen to it sung by Brook.

  • @vladimirru13 I'm with you on that

  • This is one of my old time favorites. Great voice and song. The world lost a really great singer.

  • It captures the mood perfectly!

  • When this song came out I had just moved to New York from Ga. And it was raining the day I heard this song. Is Brooke Benton still living?

  • @windjammerish Brook died at 57 in the late 80s. The world lost one of its greatest male singers. No one like him to this day.

  • When this song came out I had just moved to New York from Ga. And it was raining the day I heard this song.

  • "How many times I wonder, It still comes out the same" Man, I remember hearing this song from a tavern behind my house around 8 yrs. old, thinking he was pinning for his Love. Now I'm wonderin why I'm languishing and lingering? Educated, skilled yet unemployed. Pullin my Johnson w/ the instinct there's a better day ahead, but each day I rise- why?? "Its life, and you just gotta play the game" What a fuckin line / life.. HOPE beyond reality. Stolen Africans held onto HOPE. Feel like a Beyatch.

  • Man, that is some great music. Makes me want to go to Georgia, burt then it makes me to sad to follow through.....

  • Quite possibly the most technically perfect song ever

  • @Maginel73 I love how in the bridge he speaks obliquely, "...how many times i wondered..." He doesn't spell out what he's referring to and the mystery pulls you in. That makes it personal, it resonates, it is whatever you want it to be. Brilliant.

  • I been there- April 1980 & I was a 16 year old runaway Yankee from NY; walked, hitched, and bused [mostly walked] looking for something I couldn't find. Long story short, I came to my senses and took this bus company's offer [can't recall which company, probably Greyhound or Trailways] of a free ride home for runaways, no questions asked.

  • love this!

  • thank you very much....got me right in the heart.

  • If you ever live in Georgia, it becomes a part of you that you always remember. For Georgia is love and pain, happy and sad, all at one time.

  • A voice and song that showed the depth of his endless talent.

  • Soothing music... best music that ever was... classic with many great memories :)

  • This was first played at my grand fathers funeral.......brilliant song!

  • I'm sure that everyone in every small town, USA, thought of their town when this song came on during a rainy night.

  • i wish my son would answer me i; m new to this

  • My late mother was crazy about Brook Benton. She was from Georgia and she loved this song. It brings back memories of her sitting back with me, just talking 'girl talk' and listening to Mr. Benton.....

  • I lived in Georgia for 7 years with my family, near HotLanta, Norcross, thanks for this! This one and Ray's hymn will always take me back to some great southern Magnolia days...Slointe to Georgia Tech and the Stone Mountain laser show !

  • I remember (i was about 15-16 yrs. of age) my mom had put me out of the house. I found myself walking in the rain. I had passed a local bar.The door was propped open as it was a hot friday night..As I walked pass, this song was playing on the "juke box". As I listened I found myself crying uncontrollably....GOD I love this song!

  • @dickensbey take care...

  • @satta1980

I apologize for just responding to you. I am still relatively new to "navigating" around on computers. However, I want to thank you for your response to my comment. It appears that you "related" to my pain, or you where simply "sympathetic".Whichever the case.....thank you!

  • listen to this every time there is a rainy night - It really captures a certain Georgia feeling.

  • this is one of my all time favorites i listen to this song evey day such a relaxin sound brook benton will always be one of the best all time this is real music

  • And who would have guessed this song was written by Tony Joe White?

  • thanks....i like it

  • i don't know what it is about this song, but i absolutely LOVE IT!!!!! and i NEVER get tired of hearing it!

  • quality

  • it's my dad's favorite song.

  • This reminds me of the time i dated a girl in Atlanta.Everytime it rained in Atlanta it would look so peceful and quiet. We used to make love to this song i really miss her.

  • I love this song. It is kind of a sad sounding song, but yet it makes me feel all wam and fuzzy inside. :0)

  • Nice video.

  • . . . So beautiful and yet so melancholy. ;-)

  • Love this song. Can anyone post the original song? I used to listen to that over and over.

  • Lots of Rain

    Lots of states....

    Lots of boxcars...

They call them apartments and trailers now.

Thank god for this old guitar

  • great Video !

  • What is it with Georgia? The Devil Went Down To Georgia, perhaps waiting for a Rainy Night in Georgia, perhaps aboard The Midnight Train To Georgia, along the way singing Georgia On My Mind or whistling Sweet Georgia Brown.

  • @hork111

I don't know, but I discovered this song just days before Atlanta flooded last fall.

  • @hork111 don't forget the song Thats the night that the lights went out in Georgia

  • @hork111 It's all about Georgia!

  • @hork111 Originally, Midnight Train to Georgia was bound for.. HOUSTON! *gasp!*

  • @hork111 and no mentioning of peaches? Imagine that?

  • @hork111 Because it's one of the most amazing places in the universe. I've been to and through most of the states, but none of them felt like home.

  • 2010Jan02 - It's been raining here in Vancouver since yesterday.

Thanks for the montage to go with the song.

The harmonica makes it so much sadder...

Thanks and have a Happy 2010.

  • Great to hear this again , my dad had a Brook Benton 33 speed vinyl and i played this in the 70's and 80's , memories flood back in torrents as i listen to it

  • yea its been raining all night in england as well

  • A song my Dad and I both enjoyed.

  • great job putting montage together, pics depict the words of the song, well done!!! Love this song, thanks for posting!!!!

  • A nice old classic nicely put together! Great job! Had to listen to it; been raining all night here in Georgia. Thanks!

  • Nicely done!

  • This song gives me chills!!! I love it.

  • Awsome song! One of my all time favorites.

  • This isn't the original version that came out in early 1970; but it's close enough - very close. :)

  • who did the original version?

  • What I meant was that this isn't the original Brook Benton version - assuming that the original is the one that came out in early 1970.

  • No this is the song that came out in early 1970. I remember it well..I lost a girlfriend to a guy with a chevy convertible in high school and this song came out at the same time lol. I thought you meant there was another singer's version. My mistake!

  • Actually this is not the same Benton version that came out in early 1970. For one, a couple of spots in the instrumentation are slightly different. Also, toward the end, Brook sings "A kind loney guy, you're (we're?) talkin 'bout a (here he goes into" the rainy, rainy, rainy.." repeat section). I still have the original 45 rpm copy I bought back then which also shows that this is a slightly different version.

  • ProtwoAm:

You are correct. See my earlier respone, I am almost betting that you have the original Cotilian version which was the one heard on the radios during the 70's. If so treasure that copy, because it's very hard if not impossible to find

  • Yes, sir; that's the copy I have. I have a shopping bag full of 45s from the 1950s, '60s, & '70s. I also acquired (from my late Dad's estate) a framed gold record copy of the Shondell's 1966 hit "Hanky Panky". I have no idea what this might be worth.

  • I do not know what that Shondell record may be worth. I am thinking that the Shondells were on the Roulette label which may be the one you have, however I am not sure.

Your post got me looking at some of the old stuff I have. I didn't realize I had Johnny Rivers material on the old Liberty, Imperial labels.

Good to keep those oldies around. :)

  • yeah the version i have has a different band playing and no harmonics is playing in the background and it sounds older. this version sounds like the light rock version

  • Jimbowie09:

You are correct. The original version was found on the Cotilian label. That was the one heard on radios for years. Sadly to say I have looked all over YouTube and can't now seem to find that version.

    So sad :(

  • I know, i did the same thing.

  • Thank you so much for posting this version. I love this song no matter who sings it but this man's rich voice makes you melt.

  • ray charles sings it much better.

  • I love this song, but not this version of it. This version has too much twang in it and Brook's voice does not sound as haunting and rich as on the original version. I guess I am very partial to the old Cotalian label version.

  • I wish I could find the Randy Crawford version. If someone has it, please post it.

  • I remember hearing this song as a kid growing up in Atlanta, GA in the 70s. I also remember this in particular while doing late night weekend road trips between Quantico, VA and Atlanta, GA. I was a newly commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the USMC in 1989. This song would sometimes come on the radio at night during those long 600 mile lonely road trips through rural VA, NC, SC, and into GA. Relaxing and poignant, melodic and nostalgic, it makes me yearn for my younger days. Thank you!

  • Chile this my song from when I was a lil girl sittin down in Macon georgia with Grandma Dotty

    This is music right here...

  • THIS MUSIC IS DA BOSS!
