The door hinge pillars should also be braced, from side to side, when removing the heater channels. What you're calling the firewall is called the bulkhead. A spot weld drill bit works a lot better than a regular drill bit for removing spot welds. I like Eastwood's bit, with the replaceable cutters.
Unfortunately I crashed my loved Bug against a light pole, tremendous front end damage, I'm going to the junkyards today to find a donor car. I'm planning on replacing the whole front end, from where the door post meets the roof forward

Would an angle grinder be better than drilling all those hole as the have to be welded back up?

I have to do that in my '65 too :) heater channels and fire wall, I already done the floor pan, freaky rust!
