@1537trainman2 - It's called "Hell gate Bridge" because it crosses over Hell gate strait which, to this day, is a very hard place to boat through due to very strong tidal flows..
I wonder if the tunnels they're digging to connect from Sunnyside Yard to the 63rd Street Tunnel and the existing tunnel itself for LIRR's East Side Access project will be rated for faster speeds...

Nothing like these up north rainy days on the train! Why must they deface Hell Gate? Always wondered why there are only two tracks for Amtrak on Hell Gate! It's going to be impossible to reconstruct Metro North's part of the NEC! Good vid!

Who cares what it costs ??! trains are a necessity anyway, all countries have a national railroad system, its logical. Amtrak writes on its timetables who pays for what where such as "X.. service is financed in part through funds made available by ...blah blah blah..." Do passengers need to know that ? As if we had to know the cost of serving Paris, Moscow, Tokyo, Montréal, Vancouver, Lhasa, Berlin, Warsaw, The Hague, Roma, Belgrade etc... Amtrak is unique.
The MTA made a plan in 2008 to bring the metro north new haven line on the hellgate bridge into pennstation to stop all the train traffic in grandcentral. They said that it should be done by 2011. I wonder if progress has been made.

@phantomlord54 In the video, the elevated line being passed under first goes across all the tracks and comes down facing east on a ramp on the far side of the yards. Since most of the yards to the east were for MUs and Pullmans, perhaps freight then backed into LIC or went towards the Hells Gate, or LIRR. That I don't know.

@phantomlord54 The ramp that we see curving above, comes down into the yards that were known as the North Side Division Freight yards, which harkened back to that road that I think merged with the LIRR in 1878. Between the two ramps run two of the LIRR tunnel approaches (inbound and out).. I believe the tunnel we were viewing is from 31st Street and was (is?) known as Line F. @phantomlord54 This is Long Island City. The LIRR Hunterspoint Avenue Station is just past the tunnel exit, to the right above past the freight el. We can see the North Side Div. ramp I see now. 49th Avenue is still called Hunterspoint Ave. before Skillman enters it.

look at all the cars on the interstate, all this people is missing out on a great ride,i wish i could go there and experience a great train ride like this 5stars my friend
Ive carried many new toyota products into Conn...and the first thing i noticed when I first started running 95 north was how many times the corridor criss crossed 95, with its bridges with its New Haven style catenary and how busy, congested and tight it was..nice video..especially hells gate..
Great video. It captures the true essence of the NE Corridor north of NYC into CT. There is no excuse for profane language on this site. SHAME. Thank you for the posting.
It's named for the tidal straight it crosses. At that area, the East River, Harlem River and Long Island Sound converge, and the name (going back to the Dutch) was, by some accounts, given due to the strong currents in the area. It was originally called The New York Connecting Railroad Bridge.
As noted, the Dutch named the location for the treacherous tidal flows that surge thru the strait day & night. The East River is not actually a "river", it's a tidal estuary connecting western Long Island Sound & the Atlantic thru NY Bay & the Hudson, all of which have differing tides, thus the flow "reverses" all day. I've read that even the strongest male crew couldn't/can't row across in the major surges. This majestic bridge must have one of the higher rail decks above sea level in N. Amer.
It's depressing to me that we're seemingly intent on leaving wood beams at the switchpoints, which are some of the key points. I suppose do the easy replacement work first.
Thank You Amtrak Fan 4 this video !!! I work 4 the "trak" here in Chicago & alway's love comin 2 the "NEC" on vacation !!! I love the "NEC" 4 all the different type's of train's that travel up & down the corridor !!! 5***** & OSCAR !!! "BRAVO, BRAVO" !!!
Yes, the NEC is OK. But we should have this kink of service right out of Chicago in all directions too! What little money that has been spent on trains has been spent here. While Des Moines, Nashville, Louisville, pay for it. And have no service.
Hey hop on a train at your nearest station. The're fun! With Amtrak's low fares you can't afford to stay home! As the New Haven used to say "Train yourself to relax!"
I hardley never take the metro north, only once in a year I'll say probley yea once in a year lol yea I know It's funny, The only time I will ever take the metro north is when I go to new rochelle to go Ice Skating and thats it
It connects to 500 cities nationwide. Coast to coast and Canada too! I know Amtrak thinks it's the Northeast Corridor Railroad Company. But it's really the National Railroad Passenger Corporation. We just don't have much service in the rest of the country.
Wow , this is a great video. It brings back many memories for me as II use to work for Amtrak as a LSA , so what you filmed is what I saw all the time. When I had a break I would go and look out the rear window when ever I could. It was cool going in the tunel.
Very good footage, although that tunnel bit at the start makes me a bit travelsick! That railway bridge has a bit of a gothic look to it especially in the dark weather.
wow!!!! so basically even though the Metro north and and Long railroads are on different track their kinda connected via the northeast corridor, because if u notice the LIRR splits from the line at sunyside yard in queens and then affter the nec cross the the bridge it then aligns wit the MNRR at new rochelle!!!
Without Amtrak to pay the costs of track and some of the major stations. The Metro-North and Long Island would have to close. That's why the NEC looses so much money. But it's hidden by allocateing costs to the token train system across the country which really makes money.
@TheLastBrainLeft The last two presidents of Amtrak admitted the Northeast corridor is a money pit! The NEC loses 700 million ayear! 15 trains produce 50% of Amtrak's ticket income. Just 15 and they are all cross country trains. The books are cooked, and expenses are sent out accross the country on those 15 routes. Making them lose money and and the NEC look good.
@intercityrailpal Yes, we need the corridor. But we need service everywhere not just where the rich and powerful live. Please get update information. The corridor is a high speed railroad that is worn out. Bridges, tunnels wires etc. Amtrak will spend billions replaceing this stuff. The rest of the county, they run on a RENTED railroad. Those companys pay for the improvements not Amtrak. Lower speeds = lower costs.
I didn't know that the speed limit for the East River was 60 mph. When I go there with LIRR we usually go about 40 - 50 mph sometimes faster or slower. Thanks
when i used to ride the LIRR back in 2000 when i lived in queens, the engineer would leave the door open, we hit 63 once, he said the limits for all trains AMTK and LIRR was 60MPH
You lived in Queens!? What neighborhood? I live in Bayside. Yeah I remember when the M3 were the only electric trains I could watch out the front or the back. But now they close it off. So I just sit in the middle of the car in the 6 or 4 seaters.
When I film out of the rear window I all ways press my camera on the window so it doesn't shake. In Feb. 2008 I was filming on the end of a PATH Train out of Newark and it was so bumby I nearly fell down several times! I couldn't hold to the handle because I needed both hands to keep the camera still. Great Video 5 stars favored. Keep up the good work!
It is so hard to get to the rear car north of New York because they usually close it. When I took a short trip to New London coming back I was lucky because the last car was open. I watched out and the conductor said you have to in to the car. So I did but after New Rochelle I recorded on my camera from the Bronx freight yard to the tunnels entrance.
Hmmm... If you haven't found out yet most railfans don't particularly enjoy the defacing of RR property, especially a historic structure such as Hell's Gate... Not something to go rubbing our noses in or someone's going to make it a mission to teach you otherwise. Just ask LA's Wish'M.
Wow, what wonderful memories this brought back. So many times as a kid I crossed the Triborough Bridge during the 60s and 70s with my family. I always looked towards that elevated rail line and the Hell Gate Bridge, wanting to see a train cruise by.
Amtrak fan, when the scene changes at 5:45, where is your train at? Looks like somewhere in the Bronx but it's difficult to tell.
OK, that's why it looks a bit famiar. . My dad was a carpenter and used to drive to his job from the Bronx up to New Rochelle. I remember riding with him sometimes in our 68 LeMans. The highway we took ran parallel to the New Haven RR line. Was so cool seeing an occasional "red and silver flash" whipping by at speed.
Was New York Connecting Railroad. Jointly owned by Pennsylvania and New Haven Railroad. The Mainline to Boston from Pennsylvania Station New York, New York. By the way Metro-North does not own Grand Central it leases it from NY and Harlem River Railroad, yes, they still are in business!
In the video, you will see the train going around a curve up to the hells gate bridge. The switch to that curve is at harold interlocking. At 2:36 seconds look to the left. Thats the LIRR Branching off.
Enjoyed the ride - first time through the East River tunnel ! Thanks for the trip.

In general , your effort is appreciated, but I see the following things you need to improve your work:
1. wedge yourself against something so that the camera stops weaving due to train vibration.
2. stop playing with the Zoom. It distracts, sometimes at significant moments.
3. Stop Panning. the goal was to document the trip from Penn Station to wherever you got off, not highlight interesting things along the route.

I suppose there were alot ships wrecked and lost along with the sailors in this area.

It's over the gates of HELL in the river. Which was very hard to sail thru before power boats.

Amer.

Awesome video just like all your videos. I like the filming out the back of the train, I've never seen that before. Very well done!

It's depressing to me that we're seemingly intent on leaving wood beams at the switchpoints, which are some of the key points. I suppose do the easy replacement work first.

I know that was an R160 at 3:39 at Ditmars blvd station

Thank You Amtrak Fan 4 this video !!! I work 4 the "trak" here in Chicago & alway's love comin 2 the "NEC" on vacation !!! I love the "NEC" 4 all the different type's of train's that travel up & down the corridor !!! 5***** & OSCAR !!! "BRAVO, BRAVO" !!!
trains74 2 years ago
Yes, the NEC is OK. But we should have this kink of service right out of Chicago in all directions too! What little money that has been spent on trains has been spent here. While Des Moines, Nashville, Louisville, pay for it. And have no service.

I grew up a block from the Hellgate. Always wanted to see what it looks like up there.
Thanks

Hey hop on a train at your nearest station. The're fun! With Amtrak's low fares you can't afford to stay home! As the New Haven used to say "Train yourself to relax!"
intercityrailpal 2 years ago
It's sad that there is a track missing from the bridge.

I hardley never take the metro north, only once in a year I'll say probley yea once in a year lol yea I know It's funny, The only time I will ever take the metro north is when I go to new rochelle to go Ice Skating and thats it
34df67 2 years ago
thanks for the video bro I live rite by the new heaven line it was kinda of confusing to me cause I never know where it goes but now I do
34df67 2 years ago
It connects to 500 cities nationwide. Coast to coast and Canada too! I know Amtrak thinks it's the Northeast Corridor Railroad Company. But it's really the National Railroad Passenger Corporation. We just don't have much service in the rest of the country.
intercityrailpal 2 years ago
Wow , this is a great video. It brings back many memories for me as II use to work for Amtrak as a LSA , so what you filmed is what I saw all the time. When I had a break I would go and look out the rear window when ever I could. It was cool going in the tunel.
Thanks again..
goodeye03 2 years ago
My pleasure! LSA's have quite a tough job.
AmtrakFanNEC927 2 years ago
Very good footage, although that tunnel bit at the start makes me a bit travelsick! That railway bridge has a bit of a gothic look to it especially in the dark weather.
soundseeker63 2 years ago
Ironically, it's called "Hell Gate Bridge".
Giantsfan2104 2 years ago
wow!!!! so basically even though the Metro north and and Long railroads are on different track their kinda connected via the northeast corridor, because if u notice the LIRR splits from the line at sunyside yard in queens and then affter the nec cross the the bridge it then aligns wit the MNRR at new rochelle!!!

yes

Without Amtrak to pay the costs of track and some of the major stations. The Metro-North and Long Island would have to close. That's why the NEC looses so much money. But it's hidden by allocateing costs to the token train system across the country which really makes money.
intercityrailpal 2 years ago
@intercityrailpal The NEC actually earns money for Amtrak. The commuter services are run by local agencies.
TheLastBrainLeft 1 year ago
@TheLastBrainLeft The last two presidents of Amtrak admitted the Northeast corridor is a money pit! The NEC loses 700 million ayear! 15 trains produce 50% of Amtrak's ticket income. Just 15 and they are all cross country trains. The books are cooked, and expenses are sent out accross the country on those 15 routes. Making them lose money and and the NEC look good.
intercityrailpal 1 year ago
@intercityrailpal Yes, we need the corridor. But we need service everywhere not just where the rich and powerful live. Please get update information. The corridor is a high speed railroad that is worn out. Bridges, tunnels wires etc. Amtrak will spend billions replaceing this stuff. The rest of the county, they run on a RENTED railroad. Those companys pay for the improvements not Amtrak. Lower speeds = lower costs.
intercityrailpal 1 year ago
I didn't know that the speed limit for the East River was 60 mph. When I go there with LIRR we usually go about 40 - 50 mph sometimes faster or slower. Thanks
traindude80 2 years ago
when i used to ride the LIRR back in 2000 when i lived in queens, the engineer would leave the door open, we hit 63 once, he said the limits for all trains AMTK and LIRR was 60MPH
AmtrakFanNEC927 2 years ago
You lived in Queens!? What neighborhood? I live in Bayside. Yeah I remember when the M3 were the only electric trains I could watch out the front or the back. But now they close it off. So I just sit in the middle of the car in the 6 or 4 seaters.
traindude80 2 years ago
Ha! Bayside as well!
AmtrakFanNEC927 2 years ago
Wow!!!!! That's great! I'm we probobly saw each other there! I live on 215 st. Close to the tracks.

Man I live in Little Neck right next to the tracks
Thats pretty close

When I film out of the rear window I all ways press my camera on the window so it doesn't shake. In Feb. 2008 I was filming on the end of a PATH Train out of Newark and it was so bumby I nearly fell down several times! I couldn't hold to the handle because I needed both hands to keep the camera still. Great Video 5 stars favored. Keep up the good work!
traindude80 2 years ago
it's that the New Jersey Transit trains at the yard on 2:20?
chattaboxxxx07 2 years ago
NJ transit I think uses some space in the Yard, but that yard is the Sunnyside Yard, which is one of the most important Amtrak facilities around.
apodino 2 years ago
It is so hard to get to the rear car north of New York because they usually close it. When I took a short trip to New London coming back I was lucky because the last car was open. I watched out and the conductor said you have to in to the car. So I did but after New Rochelle I recorded on my camera from the Bronx freight yard to the tunnels entrance.
traindude80 2 years ago
Correct me if i'm wrong but don't this train goes through Mystic Conn.? By the way i like the video. Exellent work my friend.

That is correct, Northeast Regional service to Boston.

Now if tilting was allowed would the speed be faster on the new haven line? Does the cantery need to be updated and the track?

whos that?
AmtrakFanNEC927 2 years ago
Hmmm... If you haven't found out yet most railfans don't particularly enjoy the defacing of RR property, especially a historic structure such as Hell's Gate... Not something to go rubbing our noses in or someone's going to make it a mission to teach you otherwise. Just ask LA's Wish'M.
Jaanfo 2 years ago
Wow, what wonderful memories this brought back. So many times as a kid I crossed the Triborough Bridge during the 60s and 70s with my family. I always looked towards that elevated rail line and the Hell Gate Bridge, wanting to see a train cruise by.
Amtrak fan, when the scene changes at 5:45, where is your train at? Looks like somewhere in the Bronx but it's difficult to tell.
ACLTony 2 years ago
Thanks! And thats New Rochelle
AmtrakFanNEC927 2 years ago
OK, that's why it looks a bit famiar. . My dad was a carpenter and used to drive to his job from the Bronx up to New Rochelle. I remember riding with him sometimes in our 68 LeMans. The highway we took ran parallel to the New Haven RR line. Was so cool seeing an occasional "red and silver flash" whipping by at speed.

He is at New Rochelle station at 5:45

which Amtrak line was this?
SpywareHater 3 years ago
Northeast Corridor.
AmtrakFanNEC927 3 years ago
Was New York Connecting Railroad. Jointly owned by Pennsylvania and New Haven Railroad. The Mainline to Boston from Pennsylvania Station New York, New York. By the way Metro-North does not own Grand Central it leases it from NY and Harlem River Railroad, yes, they still are in business!

Great Video! Were you riding a Shorline East?
amtrakboy37 3 years ago
Just curious, but where exactly do Amtrak and the LIRR head their seperate ways after leaving Penn Station?
R160A 3 years ago
In the video, you will see the train going around a curve up to the hells gate bridge. The switch to that curve is at harold interlocking. At 2:36 seconds look to the left. Thats the LIRR Branching off.
