Yes, you're right. Unfortunately, many Thais still cook with charcoal as they can't afford anything else. In fact, I've read that most of the trees cut down globally are cut down for cooking. that's a bit shocking if true.

so it never environmental friendly.
I've seen many made of clay there.
Heating the wood in a low oxigen oven does the trick
