I seriosly doubt Iran has the capacity to sink a carrier. US E2C early warning aircraft would make a "surprise" missile or air attack impossible. Its only chance (small chance) would be a mass torpedo strike with its very quiet submarines - but such an attack would cost Iran its entire sub force.

I seriosly doubt Iran has the capacity to sink a carrier. US E2C early warning aircraft would make a "surprise" missile or air attack impossible. Its only chance (small chance) would be a mass torpedo strike with its very quiet submarines - but such an attack would cost Iran its entire sub force.
Suicide submarines packed with explosives? - Probably not. I think a US carrier is pretty much impregnable to anything short of a multiple nuclear torpedo strike.

@crocfme Naval ships are surprisingly easy to sink, All it takes is concussion to break a beam. If that happens the ship is lost within hours. Iran is running cheap technology that means thousands of small fast armed stealth vessels. Silly Americans, big and expensive is not always the most effective. You had more then enough problems against IED's and Punji sticks. Look up Frogmen if you don't get it yet.

Divers with limpet mines etc. have been effective in past conflicts, but only against ships in port or at anchor. ie stationary. Except in the unlikely event of mechanical breakdown, warships patroling potentially hostile waters are never stationary.
