This guy is soooo full of crap! First off, that is a PARAGLIDER not a parachute. From the video I could see a couple of "not great but manageable landing spots" and in any case, a tree landing might be preferable to a landing on water. Second thing: you are over the lake and can't tell your altitude? Look at the horizon, the trees and lots of other things around you.

@daniturcu Third: In case of an imminent water landing, untie all straps but one leg strap and don't freakin flare the canopy! Let it land with the leading edge on the water and that way it won't sink dragging you to the bottom. That way you get less problems with dealing with lines and the canopy itself.

@daniturcu First off Why should it matter if it's a paraglider or not who gives a shit? Second I wouldn't want to land on a rocky mountain or some bloody trees water yes. About the lake and altitude most of us would be more concentrated on landing then checking our surroundings. Hell you take your eyes away to look at a tree you may just hit one :\

@Majoraspirit A tree is ALWAYS better than water. You drown in water, you know? Especially when strapped to a wing that will drag you under and lines that might trap you. Also, being concentrated on landing means you have to be aware of your surroundings, and, yes, estimate altitude, glide, etc. This guy did a STUNT and in my opinion portrayed very badly a sport which I practice and love. I bet you that if he was alone, without a crew he would have drowned.

That's a paragliding canopy, not a parachute. Paragliders have different shapes, lines, and glide ratios - all of which are apparent in this video.
