It was filmed in a time when artistic direction and vision meant something. The 2nd "golden age" of motion picture, before only box-office numbers started to decide what movies would be made.

Considering Francis Ford Coppola nearly died from a heart attack filming it, and it's widely seen as the movie which came closest to the chaos and madness of the Vietnam War, it's most definitely not a "stupid Hollywood movie".
