As a Czech guy, let me say: This is an OK speech. Obama is clearly trying to move to the right. McCain is my preferred choice but I am not thrilled with him.
Some of the analogies between Czechoslovakia and Georgia are absurd. But it's good to hear that Obama doesn't reproduce some of the mad anti-Russian emotions. Russia is "essentially" democratic and the 1968 occupation was due to the totalitarian nature of socialism, not due to the inherent evil of the Russian nation.
Speaking of peaceful, democratic and undivided Europe while building missile silos in vicinity of Russian border?
Patronizing Russia for being slack with human rights while occupying Iraq for no reason and with weak democracy-strengthening results?
I don't like Russia, but I neither like US and their way of keeping the power "in balance".
I think in EU we need to fall on our knees to realize the need to finally unite, then build and apply strong, self-confident and independent foreign policy.
People don't care what you know , till they know how much you care Barack Obama is a man who cares. Not in my years have i seen a man with such girts. I think he really wants to help the people i think he will make change in the world that we have not seen in history he will go down in history as a great man with a warm hart and leader not for him self but for the people. i am form Ireland and live in Ireland and i can see this i hope ye the American people can see it too...
He must have read his text screen wrong, which obviously said 'sparked the breakup of Yugoslavia when Serbia's geographically placed political necessity wore out'.

Thank you for remembering! But it is 40 years old and the same fucking stuff is happening in Georgia. The best way how you can help is influenceon people in russian. Russians are not evil, but their goverment is ..... :)
I just wish so much this guy is elected president after 8 years of the worst US president in recent history. So much in fact, I am starting to believe it's too good to be true.
Thank you from the Czech Republic for remembering this difficult day in our countries' history. The images of Soviet, Polish, Bulgarian, and Hungarian tanks and soldiers in our streets, shooting civilians, destroying property - it is still too painful. Lets hope for a better future together.
I understand the the Soviet versions of those country's governments supported the USSR, but remember that Hungary and Poland both experienced their own democratic movements that were crushed by the Soviet Union, as well as all the East Germans who had no love of their side of Germany and tried to escape to the West.
Hi from CZ. Some of ur ideas r pretty american and some r clever. Keep up good work. Btw. U think USA aint occupying Iraq? U think bombing serbian schools and hospitals was normal? U think CZ goverment shouldnt let ppl vote about US Radar base? U have still much to learn man.
I live in Czech Republic all my life, I love my country. My grandparents remembers all that suffer happened in 1968. Thanx mr. Obama for remembering this.
Nice speech. I especially appreciate (being a Czech citizen) that the memory of the Soviet invasion to Czechoslovakia from 1968 is not forgotten in the world.
Well that is something different from McCain speaking about interrupting oil supplies from Russia to Czechoslovakia few weeks ago (but Czechoslovakia really ceased to exist 15 years ago). We can only hope that people in USA will be not stupid again as in 2000 and 2004
Thank You mr. Obama. I feel really ashamed for our president Klaus, who has clearly problems with senility adequate to his age, judging from his reaction to Georgia occupation. You are a man with balls to speak the truth openly, in the face of the Tzar who wouldn't have problems with sending millions to die in another war. I became your big fan, pity that as a Czech I cannot vote for you...
The 40 years ago western world lead by USA did NOTHING to help us agains the Russians. We learned from the history that USA and other western countries never fight for "freedom" if they have no profit from it. And vice-versa. They fight for profit and call it "fight for freedom". Like war in Iraq and many others.
thanks from Czech republic

A very good speech.
Firm, yet not getting dragged into the silliness in Georgia, while being consistent and clear that borders need respected.
That is statesmanship in action.
