obviously she's a BROADWAY singer. They're not even allowed to be bad. She's a character and sings her part. Easy to figure out that she's supposed to be a bit dorky. Props for being amazing at singing in character. Nikki sounds great but it's nto abaout sounding super amazing. She's supposed to reflect her charcter to the audience. Especially since some people can barely see her anyway. It's all about sound showing what her face should. Massive skill.

its called BROADWAY. for a reason. its supposed to be over the top...its supposed to be acting aswell as singing...its completely different to the film because in the film she just had to walk and sing...in the actual musical they're over the top and CHEESE. i (L) the broadway version its how it was intended the film was just an interpretation...

No, sweetie. It's not saying that people from Baltimore sound like that, that's just her character's voice. Nasally and cute. It gives a real side to the character to have a specific voice and posture that the person playing them may not have.

And the reason you may think that it sucks compared to the movie is just because in movies, people who have a voice like that aren't usually main characters. But, in live musical theatre, it's different.

The reason why her voice is so nasally because in vocal training, in order to get your vocal chords to touch, you much produce a nasal sound, which gives pressure to the sinus. Eventually, you learn to tone it down and it fades into the background, but in THIS CHARACTER, she was able to show the rawness of getting your vocal chords to touch. It's hard, I've been working on it for over a month!

People saw the movie first and liked Rosario Dawson before hearing Daphne Rubin-Vega (OBC Mimi Marquez) and her awkward like voice.

I admit that this OBC Tracey doesn't sound as angelic as Nikki Blonsky but you have to realize, producers hired Marissa to help make Hairspray what it became and if it wasn't for her, there would be NO Nikki Blonsky.!
