I like the finished versions of most of their demo songs, this one included. I like dynamics in a song, and most demos are spun off of programmed (or looped) drum tracks and you lose out on that.
However, in defense of demos, for a more selfish reason, stripped down versions of songs that have as much compositional depth in them as XTC does are a hell of a lot easier to learn how to play, since you can hear the key instruments very clearly without 20 string pads and gated reverbs.
Dunno why they released the two demos for the last two albums. Didn't see the point of it when the actual versions of the songs were PERFECT! I bought the Apple Venus demos and was highly disappointed. Wish they would have released NEW stuff instead of rehashed crap versions of the old. Looks like they sealed their fates with the demos since they are all done now.
The demos had been circulating on the Internet for most of the '90s. If you recall, the band was "on strike" against Virgin Records, which explains the seven-year gap between _Nonsuch_ and _Apple Venus_. They then released the demos that many fans had already heard as cleaner versions to supplement the studio recordings. They needed whatever money they could squeeze from the two projects.
Both Andy and fans put-down the Homegrown album. Maybe because they were incomplete demos and alternate versions of demos. I disagee with all of them, i love music in it's creative stage. I really love the acoustic demos on this record. Please post more from this Homegrown.

Wasn't it all Andy Partridge, bass and all, on the demo version?

@Topographer - Yes, they usually did all their own instruments in their demos, so if the studio version is like the demo, it was written that way.

I like the 'folkenstein' creations on this album. It's interesting to see two song ideas mix into one awesome song.

And yes, Highflyer68, Colin's bass lines in the demo version here are infinitely better.

I preferred the subtlety of the final version. Either way, very beautiful song.

This has one of my favourite bass lines ever by Colin.
It's too bad that he simplified it on the final version...this one is genius.
