@MOGGS1942 Ella's Cole Porter song book is considered to be the definitive rendition of his songs. Throughout the 50's and into the 60's she set to work and turned out the greatest recordings of the American Popular song. It was a string of masterpieces, and we should also thank Norman Granz for his recognittion of the importance of Ella taking on all those classic songs for posterity. Here's another verison of this song I love /watch?v=4GJqK4RRnY4&feature=related
@judyaosta Hi:) Big fan of Cole Porter too. If you haven't heard Nina Simone's rendition, check it out. Her vocal imagery and use of the intended "minor" key is incredibly touching.
if I had to choose one album to take to a desert island, Ella Fitzgerald's Cole Porter Songbook would be it - and this track is perfection itself. Thanks for posting it on YouTube
Who the fuc is Luc? Thumbs up if you want twittering tweener idiots to stick to Gaga and Bieber. xBox, vampire serial-producers and no-talent whores like those previously mentioned should be sued for/banned from even uttering the name of Ella Fitzgerald or Cole Porter.
"THE COLE PORTER ALBUM WAS THE TURNING POINT IN MY LIFE. DOING THOSE SONG-BOOKS HELPED ME GET INTO SPOTS I'D NEVER BEEN ABLE TO PLAY BEFORE. WHAT'S GOOD ABOUT IT TOO IS THAT NOW I CAN ALSO SING JAZZ FOR PEOPLE WHO NEVER LISTENED BEFORE." - Ella Fitzgerald
just because luc tweets it doesnt mean its for lady gaga remember last we heard they are no longer and she denies it all the time ... he's a dirty looking grease bag get over him already .
@praireguy23 They ARE still together. Gaga herself said it to @MarcMonser less than 2 weeks ago!! + She tweeted the picture of Ginger (Luc Carl's car) on twitter not too long ago. + He still tweets about her all the time. + She did NOT deny having a boyfriend on the Late Show with David Letterman, she just tried to change the subject fearing that us monsters would think that they broke up if she said she doesnt have a bf. + HAVE YOU HEARD YOU & I?! This is one of those unique combinations that come along every so often, a brilliant singer and a song that is made just for them. I heard this a few years ago in an old fashioned pub and when it was playing the years just seemed to roll away and it was like being transported into a more comfortable age. Brilliant.
Thou wast not born for death, immortal Bird! No hungry generations tread thee down; The voice I hear this passing night was heard In ancient days by emperor and clown: Perhaps the self-same song that found a path Through the sad heart of Ruth, when, sick for home, She stood in tears amid the alien corn; The same that oft-times hath Charm'd magic casements, opening on the foam Of perilous seas, in faery lands forlorn. John Keats - Ode To A Nightingale
John Keats - To A Nightingale
This heart speaks so much. I cannot help but feel I was born in the wrong time period sometimes (me being 21). This music is overwhelmingly beautiful. Thanks!!!
@LadyBug3314 I'm with you totally!!!! I'm 29 and everyone my age thinks I'm crazy. But my bf always says I was born in the wrong time. Luckily so was he - but he's the 50's-60's (He's 26). lol
I'd like to say this is my favourite Cole Porter song... It is.. but any Cole Porter song i am listening to at the time is my favourite one. And Ella is in my memory as the best interpreter of the song I ever heard.... She puts you in heaven, that's for sure... I was lucky enough to see her once at 'the Little Club' in LA. No longer there. All the great places in Hollywood are either gone, or have turned into amusement parks.. Well, this IS my favourite and it IS heavenly...
This woman had the voice of an Angel, never to be heard again. It was supposed to be the finale song as requested at my fathers funeral, but some dingus cocked it up by forgetting to play it, it was my fathers favourite singer of all time......god bless you all...xxxx
I wish artists these days would sing more like Ella and Dean Martin, because all this mainstream rapping, pop, and hip-hop crap is not art. So many hip hop "singers" use autotune anyways, like how the hell do people think they are talented? THIS right here, is real, genuine talent.
@HollyOgre The songs of old sung about loving somebody else, the songs nowadays sings about loving ourselves! Songs today are very selfish and self centered, and they wonder why fights break out most nights in night clubs nowadays! Music has a great impact on mental well beinging, or the lack thereof! when people bounce all night with an entitlement issues and songs that scream ph@ck u, and Kiss myA@@ all night, what else do you expect from the crowd?
It kind of makes me sad about teens my age, they have hardly any respect for this sort of music.... I love this so much... I guess it makes me happy to be different.
Of all the great things America gave the world in the 20th century, none is greater than the popular song. (And really great artists to perform them). This is a perfect example (among thousands).
I first heard this song when I was like 15 on Parent Trap when one twin returned to England with her mother on the airplane, and it was raining really hard.
I wish Riddle had done the arrangements on all the Songbooks. He has the most intelligent strings. This is good--but not as good as the arrangements on the Gershwin Songbook.
Pure class. A perfect combination of unforced, mellow voice and fantastic orchestration. Today's untalented, overrated 'divas' can only dream of interpreting a song as good as Ella does hereh. I have to say that I HATE jazz, and I am not a big fan either of 'standards'. But this performance simply grabs you and holds you in its thrall. I defy anyone to argue that this is not one of the best tracks EVER made.
My joy is that my Sister was blessed with Ella's Voice & when she sung Ella you could not tell the difference even Louis Armstrong thought she was black when he heard her & was blown away by her fell & rich toned voice, unfortunately it was in South Africa in the apartheid era, so she could not sing with his band enough said
She sang this to me when I was a kid it influenced my playing so much I became know as The Singer on Drums.
Another song to put up with Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You" in my list of most wonderful love songs (be they happy, sad, plaintive, thoughtful, sweet....). But this song can also apply to any goodbye, not just a romantic goodbye.
Added this to 1956 in my century of music archive - a playlist for each and every year back to 1900 lets you hear the music of any year in the context of its time.
Each list plays up to 2 hours like a trip into the past, hope you try it . . . . . . . .
The definitive version of this exquisite song! I can remember hearing it on Two Way Family Favourites on BBC's Light Programme back in the early Sixties. Mmmmmm! Ahhh!
The Buddy Bregman arrangement is a perfect match for Ella's interpretation. The combination is up there at the top, along with her version of Midnight Sun & Nelson Riddle's arrangement of that Johnny Mercer classic.
and what do you say to the people who like both? I love Ella and M.I.A. Music is subjective and to get the most out of it its best to keep an open mind, about all of it.
