  • Few musicians will ever reach the level that Joan is Master of. A level of perfection such as this is practically unmatched in todays "musical" standards. A guitar, a voice, and a passion are all that is needed to get the attention of the world.

  • PRIEST RULES!

  • OK. Judas Priest's version of this song is awesome. But this is beautiful. thank you Asadpour

  • Now this is talent! Amazing song, amazing artist, amazing singing (in tune), amazing guitar skills. PERFECT!

  • most beautiful woman in the world...

  • can't get enough!! i watch this vid more then 100 times!

  • this song guts me every time! Baez inspires me!

  • according to her autobiography: the song is about her first husband, Not Bob Dylan, but he did think it was about him and so the story got started and brandied about...

  • @SirNavarreOfAcre

Have you actually read the biography? I have. It is clear that the song is about Bob Dylan. In fact there is a chapter about Dylan organized around the song... She told Dylan it was about her husband (and that quote was taken out of context and posted on Wikipedia, which I assume is were you are getting your information), but she was just responding to Dylan's smug assumption that it was about him.

  • I like Judas Priests version too.

  • probably one of the greatest records ever...

  • All us old folkies know exactly what the song is about. Joan's singing about the time her old boyfriend, Bob Dylan, called her, around 1975. She was crazy about him in the early 60's but he wasn't as serious as she was and he eventually married his manager's daughter.

It's a brilliant song and her guitar drives the lyrics perfectly.

  • @boldaq1 I thought Sara was a friend of his managers wife.

  • @nana78748 You are correct, nana.

  • Ok, here's my take on it:

I'm sure most of you, including myself, have been in relationships that didn't work out. The line "hearing a voice I'd known, a couple of light years ago" to me means the voice on the phone she hears is from another time & another place. It's been a long time and she has moved on since then. Kinda like the opening of each Star Wars movie, "a long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." it's just that she used a measurment for distance instead of time.

  • Homer Simpson Mom!

  • Happy Birthday Joan!

  • This song is a classic for anyone who appreciates true class in music. The lyrics are unique and written for a man Joan loved. She did a absolute outstanding performance on this song. Remarkable.

  • My husband who is a little older than me forced me 2 listen 2 this song! thank G-D he did chacka69 Bless 2012 !

  • growing up with this song and her - deep immersed in her music, her words and viewpoint - probably one of my biggest influences and one i am thankful for - my dad opened the door to joan baez and dylan for me and i hope my daughter finds as much joy, music and meaning in her as i did and continue to . So delicious watching her sing on You tube and hope to hear her in person at least once in my life time. Thanks all who have uploaded all these lovely videos.

  • Both brilliant. Not a competition.

  • this is just one woman making this complex, beautiful sound.. and judas priest is a whole band.

  • @ThePhilosopherKing00 What a ridiculous statement...

  • i dont want to hear the judas priest version after hearing what i just hear... how can you improve the perfect song?

  • Judas Priest version is shorter lyrics wise. Don't know why they changed so much of the song.

  • .... uhh.... priest just got served..... HOW?? What? eh.... My entire life needs rethinking

  • I completely disagree with her politics but she's talented and beautiful.....

  • Leaves blowing in through a broken down hotel room window overlooking Washington park, Greenwich Village. Dylan's appearing tonight and I went without eating 2 days so we could buy these tickets. I have orders for Nam but when I hear him sing it makes me think I should go to Canada. You look beautiful with the snow in your hair. (Diary note to myself about Dylan's New York Concert on my way to the tet offensive 1967-1968.

  • you two are pathetic...what's the point with insults for a matter like this?...go to bed children..both of you.

  • This woman ripped off Judas Priest.

  • @antdigger

They did a cover of her song.

  • @antdigger I assure you she did not. It is her song. Perhaps they're the ones that ripped off JOAN BAEZ. She is a true legend.

  • Who the fuck is Judas Priest?

  • @elchacalito07 ok. First off...Smash your square headed redneck texas cousin loving head into the nearest wall...Ok? next...Judas priest BLOWS Joan Baez AWAY...end of story...there is no comparison...so take that 200$ piano ram it straight up your faggot ass. I hope you hit by a fucking Wile E Coyote ANVIL you fucking dumbass.

  • @zZzMotherShipzZz Honestly the comment must have gone over your head completley. And what the fuck is wrong with you, can you be any more ignorant regarding texas residents, oh, and good job on the research I'm sure you learned a lot you little shit. Now go back to your cave and shut the fuck up cause nobody cares, bitch.

  • @elchacalito07 Actually i meant every single word. and FUCK TEXAS.

  • @zZzMotherShipzZz Your just a little fucktard that needs to shut the fuck up. If you're gonna be that stupid and ignorant join some fucking political group or just dig a hole and die. I'm glad you really hate a state cause I couldn't give two fucks, and ultimately you won't amount to anything but some fat bastard who wastes his time criticizing people on their place of birth. Your just one pathetic excuse for a close minded, ignorant dumb ass. Have a nice day you stupid fuck.

  • @elchacalito07 I need to shut the fuck up? Maybe the stupid mouthy little dickweed over here needs to shut the fuck up. YOU were the one who criticizing Judas Priest...YOU are the tumbling dickweed who got so butthurt that he needed to type up a fucking paragraph telling me that i waste my time telling retards like yourself that they need to kill themselves and be struck by a meteor. Fuck Texas and Fuck You. Get struck by the nearest meteor. Please.

  • @gerry909

    moron

  • @gerry909 Hi! It's not a cover, she's the author

  • @gerry909 This is the original song. Judas Priest cover it.

  • Joan Baez went to Hanoi, north Vietnam, and she stayed there under the most terrible carpetbombing of the war sharing the shelters with vietnam people, and all thisjust because she believed in something. She is something.

  • Brings back such memories , Before college i was hanging out with a friend, with benefits . I went to college and moved on to other girls and went on with my life ,but I would still call her once in a while until one day she told me Joan wrote a song about me. I had heard it but never thought about it until then . I never called her again, my loss, She was a real friend and I didn't understand.

  • @wspencerable Wow... I feel for the haunting of your memories. This certainly is one of those songs that makes you see the demons we try so hard to lock away.

  • her voice comes straight from heaven.....bob dylan said that

  • Love this song, amazing, this version is great, but so is Judas Priest's version. Good to see they are still doing it live.

  • True beauty, yes tragedy, but wow, they don't have your beauty anymore. ( :

  • Judas Priest brought me here!

  • @ImPacman Me too!

  • @theburkett67 Was at the Priest concert in Seattle, 10/29/11

  • @ImPacman

Glad you made it to Joan Baez-

Try "Love is Just a Four Letter Word."

    She's great-

P.S. I checked out the Judas Priest version- I liked it alot-

    Peace-

  • @ImPacman Me too and i love the original too.

  • I can't wait to see her perform :D <3

  • ta vradia se vlepo ston ypno mou

    hronia sou polla

  • what did she say at the beginning ? "by far......." Was she mentioned about Bob Dylan ? But she wrote this song for him surely, you can check it out in her books.

  • @dahliafinal "by far the most talented, crazy person I ever worked with" - an explicit nod to Dylan.

  • @Toofartony also, i particularly like the fact she says "worked with", as if that were all there was to it.

  • Awesome. My dad had this record. He played it alot when i was a kid. I love this song.. it brings back memories.

  • Where's Halford???

  • In lieu!

  • omg this song made me cry more than the time i watched the room by tommy wiseau.. thank u for uploading

  • @rayray66 Beautiful song indeed, but is that to say that you like "The Room?" Or were you being sarcastic? Please tell me you were being sarcastic... it'd be such a shame to earnestly compare this song with that unfortunate waste of film : (.

  • lieu. It's French

  • I ment to say the greater compliment was that I am actually hearing it for the first time again. Commenting from an iPhone, which in lue of the comment is slightly ironic. Also could someone please tell me how to spell lue properly

  • Does anyone else feel the same way I do about this song. Every single time I hear it, it feels as if I'm listening to it for the first time again. Simply amazing. What's any even greater compliment is that I really to it again for the first time. I have no other words to describe this music justly. I was born too late.

  • @schneedlehopper

    You tagged it exactly. :)

  • Judas Priest!!! This is the first time I actually heard this by Joan Baez...

  • de quien es la version original ???

  • @MrBrownstone447 Joan Baez

  • @Wollenschrank Too bad you don't get it. It's about the music and feelings it invokes. All the excess visuals of today's music videos do nothing but take away your imagination.

  • Attended Palo Alto High School, albeit long after my mom did! :)

  • What an incredible voice, and fantastic melody. I was 10 when this song came out, but it is one of those timeless, iconic songs that will stand the test of time.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm a massive Judas Priest fan who was blown away by their performance of this song in Katowice this year, and am very much a heavy metal fan, but have to say that this version is very good. She's got a very good voice and plays nicely melodically.

  • "You gonna sing that song about robin's eggs and diamonds?" Bob had asked me on the first day of rehearsals.

    "Which one?"

"You know, that one about blue eyes and diamonds..."

"Oh", I said, "you must mean 'Diamonds And Rust', the song I wrote for my husband, David. I wrote it while he was in prison."

    "For your husband?" Bob said.

"Yeah. Who did you think it was about?" I stonewalled.

"Oh, hey, what the fuck do I know?"

"Never mind. Yeah, I'll sing it, if you like."

  • This song has hovered over my soul since first hearing it in 75. I will eventualy take it with me on my last journey. Maybe I`ll meet Joan.

  • SHE SINGS THIS SONG LIKE AN ANGEL!!!

  • another tear for memory lane sniff sniff

  • I hear this lovely voice since my 15 years old. And 35 years latter I believe she have one of the best voice in the world! Thanks Joan for sharing your soul.

  • Just as good as rob Halford

  • Hurt laurie video mc.wmv

  • love judas priest glad to hear the roots of the song

  • A gift from God.

  • Joan Baez. Top of my list of people I buy without listening first. I am into vocals, and she has it. Style has changed over the years, but the vocal remains with Joan.

  • light years measure distance, and did john lennon really fuck her?

  • Bob was well chuffed with this, BTW

  • I am not sorry for my soul

    That it must go unsatisfied,

For it can live a thousand times,

    Eternity is deep and wide.

I am not sorry for my soul,

But oh, my body that must go

Back to a little drift of dust

Without the joy it longed to know.

  • Why nowadays nobody makes music like that anymore? I hate music today, wish i was born in 1950s, so i would be young in 1970 and not now.

  • @kimberly46664

There are still people out there making good roots music - just have to look harder for them.

  • She is a realy WOMAN ! Magnificent. Great respect !

  • magic.

  • I have loved Joan for 50 years, got to see her two years ago. Words cannot describe my feelings.

  • im so happy to finally get all the lyrics.... judas priest fan for years.. i see why they redid it, great tune.

  • My husband proposed to me playing this song! A very special and poignant song I will never forget! He passed away 5 1/2 years ago and it stilll sounds wonderful to me!

  • ceux ki n'aime pas ca je comprends vraiment pas !

  • 101 people do not get it. Beautiful Joan with the angel voice.

  • The most beautiful love song ever written and only Joan should ever sing it!

  • @expressyourselfism

That seems silly to me. There are definitely bad covers out there (though I like Priest's) but a good cover can bring out aspects of a song that the original doesn't stress. At best, covering a great song is itself a creative enterprise. Do you think Baez should never cover another artist's song? I think that would be a great loss, as my favorite album of hers is Any Day Now, her collection of Dylan covers.

  • Iconic and everlasting, bliss.

  • In 1979 my parents were buying me a stereo and we were going from store to store, comparing the sounds. For some reason, one of the salesmen played this song as a demo. I was a 19 year old male, into Supertramp, Elvis Costello and ironically, Bob Dylan, not female folk singers. It blew my doors of!. I told him we'd take it if he'd include the record. He did and I still have it - the record, no idea where the stereo is.

  • @inmanmark Great story. And we're the same age.

  • @inmanmark Great story.

  • @inmanmark you were a 19 year old male back then?!what are you now, bro?!

  • @inmanmark i can relate to your words. something about that voice . haunting and true

  • @inmanmark I was the 99th person to like your comment.

  • @inmanmark

Awesome story! Now, where is my Joan Baez music?

  • I heard this song in movie Eulogy and stoped the movie, to find it. I spend 1hour searching!! This song is amazing, its something special. I totaly fall in love with it!!!

  • She Loved Dylan very much... the creative connection alone with the regular everyday love is something many never experience... I had that with someone whom was a musician also.. we both had that so called sixth sense... knew what one another were thinking.. wrot music, took words from one another;s mouth so to speak there is something to be said about it... she not only was in love with him she was addicted to his creativity

  • Dylan really got to her...

  • I am a fan of two Joans----Joan Jett and Joan Baez. Both are beautiful and very talented. Variety makes the world go around.

  • @blueberries4ever : And let's not forget the third "Joan"--Joni Mitchell.

  • If this don't cut you, you ain't alive

  • @1958circe So right

  • So beautiful!

  • I'm posting a protest song... STOP MOANING, ENJOY THE MUSIC, FORGET YOUR CRAP... HMMM HMMM... AHH... EENNNJOYYYY. etc, etc...!

  • Magnifique

Je ne me lasse pas d’écouter cette sublime voix

  • Superb work by a penultimate artist and activist. Brava, Joan.

  • THIS IS AN ANTI WAR BALAD ABOUT A RETURNING DECEASD SOLDIER AND IS VERY POIGNANT. ONE OF MY FAVORITES, RDH - GREEN GREEN GRASS OF HOME. IT IS NOT A PLEASANT HOME COMING.

  • @rdhyden1

Baez has been explicit that this is about her relationship with Dylan. She sang, and still sings, protest songs, but this is not one of them.

For one thing, how would a deceased soldier make a phone call?

  • tHIS IS AN ANTI WAR BALAD ABOUT A RETURNING DECEASD SOLDIER AND IS VERY POIGNANT. ONE OF MY FAVORITES, RDH

  • Children... calm down and listen to the music. Surely that is the important thing here...?
