Yes, I have known dozens, if not hundreds of people with HIV/AIDS, many of whom died before highly active antiretroviral therapy became available in the mid 90s.

He was found HIV+ in 1998. He does not believe in HIV, so I assume that he has not been treated. Typical HIV to AIDS progression untreated is 10 years and then maybe 2 more years before death.

It is now 2009, 11 years after first knowledge of HIV infection. He was tried in 2006, 8 years after. Apparently, he was still alive during the trial and sentencing.

Parenzee ceased ARVs for a period during the trial hearing, influenced by the arguments of the Perth Group. He was quite sick for a while.

He recommenced antiretroviral treatment in prison after the hearing was finished. I don't know if he is currently taking it.

It's doubtful that either he or the barrister who represented him actually believe the Perthians' AIDS denial, as reflected in their court later submissions for sentencing. The appeal hearing was a circus of the Perthians' making.

Prison rape may sometimes be fun to joke about, but it's no more "just" than waterboarding or any of the perverted shit that went on in Abu Ghraib. We don't sentence people to "nine years of anal rape".

She gets a chronic disease, he gets five years in jail. I'm just alluding the idea that thanks to the publicity, his five years in prison might be more unpleasant when the other prisoners know what he did.
