Tie-down straps can be quite coarse and tying a soft cloth to the strap anyplace it meets your car's paint job will will prevent the straps from marking the paint.

I just brought my brand new canoe home today, it was windy as hell and the highways where crowded with cars; yipe!
Make sure to spend some extra few dollars for a better quality strapping system...you'll be sooo glad later.
