Roddick had two match points???? That would have ruined Fed's 41 match winning streak which ran from US Open (August 2006) through Indian Wells (March 2007). He won seven titles in that streak including US Open, Tokyo, Madrid Masters, Basel, Masters Cup, Australian Open and Dubai!!!!
Roddick never goes for anything, doesn't know how to. If he ever flattened out the ball and hit he may have had more than one tourn to his name.
The one handed back hand (when executed properly) loves high spin into a shortened court and can create angles and pace with little practice. Why is no one telling roddick this? Nadal knows.
@numchiks10 you obviously haven't seen any of the Roddick matches from 2000-2005 where he literally went for everything. He hit the ball big and flat but Federer would get everything back (prime example Fed vs Roddick Toronto 04 Final), and he tried it again in the 07 US Open qf but Fed just got everything back again. But you're right, if he had done what he used to do all the time he would maybe have gotten one more slam. He made more finals in 03-06 (one final a year) than he has since then.
Watch Roddick hit that forehand at 2:38, and then scramble to get to the Fed's backhand down the line. Reminds me of a time I played a pro-am and admired a backhand down the line way too much, the guy got to it and just made me look stupid.
This isn't that amazing for Federer. A lot of good players can "come back" from their opponent having match point. It's especially not amazing considering Roddick's a choke-artist.
@SwarlesBarkely Well, Roddick is really a strange player. During year 2004---2010, Andy didn't won any important matches, but he stays in Top 10. Still, Andy starts to move, and that is important for him.
@tennisguyADNA That's a normal high backhand volley. A driving volley perhaps, but not a swinging volley. Nobody does a swinging volley with a one handed backhand. A swinging volley is typically hit around or above shoulder level, a disadvantageous position for power generation on the one handed backhand.
I remember this match. I felt so bad for Roddick, he really deserved to win this match. He did everything right up until the last few points in the second set tiebreak. All credit to Federer, though, in being able to dig out a win against a rampaging opponent when he clearly wasn't playing at his best.
I feel bad for roddick..... i mean without federer he would have like at least 2 more grandslams..... It must be depressing for him when he sees that draw and knows he is going to be walked over on
@TennisXCountry It's a bit of a trade-off for Roddick, in terms of fortune. Sure he lost several Finals to Federer, but he was extremely lucky to win his only slam. He was down 2 sets to love and down a match point in the 3rd set tiebreaker vs Nalbandian in the 2003 USO when the crowd started to shout in between the points which distracted Nalbandian, thinking he had won the match.
one tiny flaw with andy's lightning fast serves, to b honest, i think the only great thing about andy is only with serves. dont get me wrong, i luv andy (not in a gay way). his serves may b super fast, but all fast serves come with a consequence. recovery. the fster the srve, the longer the recovery. put this against fed who blocks almost all of andy's serves, then tables r turned 4 andy. fast return by fed, not fast enough recovery by andy. andy mostly loses on his first serve cuz of ths by fed
I love it how the tennis world markets Roddick as a power hitter and Federer being smooth and pretty but Federer consistenty hits harder than Roddick.
I've been thinking this for a while... but does anyone else think, when watching on TV or a highlights vid or w/e, that Federer's Ncode racquet head looks much bigger than his Kfactor and his BLX?...
@cruintention the wilson n-code does look bigger, I don´t know, about roger´s personal frame. but I know that the federer raquet model, sold in shop´s, has become a bit thinner, every year.
@extradutyfelt1 that is absolutely incorrect. i own the nCode 6.1 Tour and the BLX 6.1 Tour, I sold my K-Factor 6.1 Tour. None of them is thinner than the previous frames!
Roger got a custom made frame in 2004. Wilson slightly altered it so club level players can handle it better. With the K-Factor they put the original string pattern of Roger on the frame. but Roger has never switched frames since 2004.
@deagmomo then why do the specifications of the raquet, at the tennis warehouse website, say otherwise..I´m just consulting what tennis warehouse say´s..
The thing is Roddick is making it really hard for Federer but then he goes to the net. And he makes a passing shot. If Roddick would just stay at the baseline after he makes these terrific shots he could win the point easier.
Pathetic way to lose the second set. Trying to be fancy on a east put away can very well lose you the match. Just like failing on a easy volley can lose you a Wimbledon title.
@TheAzt3ca Oh crap. I meant that Roddick's BH pass couldn't get any better than it did in the Wimby final '09. I thought my cultured backhand pass comment was about Roddick. I forgot it was about Fed's shot.
You could say that Fed's serve won't get any better than it did that day, having 50 aces.
@mikatagahara1212 Well in the case of Roddick it's not because Roger destroys Andy from the baseline. Take a look at any long rally, Andy just gives up in the end. Roger takes time away from him little by little and makes him struggle. At least when Andy comes to the net he makes Roger hit risky passing shots so he has a chance
Mostly because of the commentator. Because most of the rallies end the same way. Federer backhand slices the ball to make Roddick approach the net. Roddick fails to put it away and Federer passes him.
Although I'll admit at times Roddick had no choice to approach the net and couldn't do much with the ball.
Roddick's antics are a little... eh.. off putting to me here haha but what do you expect me to say? I was too busy admiring the gorgeousness of Roger's play :]
seriously he is just on a level of his own. this is amazing stuff, he moves the ball around like it's mind control or something hehe. thanks for the vid :)
this is the roddick that needs to come back. confident on break points well except for the set point that he blew with that overhead. but he played points really well. saved break points not just with aces or unreturned serves. he actually hits winners or forces the errors. thats what roddick needs to do right now.

In a list of Roddick's best performances against Federer, this one has to be in the top 5 with the 2007 US Open quarterfinal, 2008 Miami quarterfinal, 2004 Wimbledon final, and 2009 Wimbledon final
How in the name of pete sampras is this an amazing comeback..... It's a normal frickin' game of tennis. Berdych vs. Federer AO'09 for example, was a real comeback, and a great one.
Amazing means "against all odds"
Other than that, great game and a great display of marvel from both players!
Yeah but I think you have to hand it to Fed for that unbelievable backhand pass. Edberg on crack wouldn't have got to that. Andy definitely should at least trying a few 'mix it up' points to show Fed something different now and then and make him think twice.

lol clever but hes generally not getting owned like this tht often especially to roddick. i actually wanted andy to win this match even tho im fed fan
roddick has a double match point when he was leading 6-4, 6-6 (6/4) in the tie break. federer came back, won the 2nd set, and then won the 3rd for the match
@drumdude46 does he not say " hit your fuckin backhand"? because a few shots earlier, he hit a reletively soft backhand and fed drilled it with his forehand and took charge of the point
yall seem to lose sight of the fact that roddick is in with the top ten best players in the world and was number one at one point... hes a good player and a nice guy. i wish he would beat fed once in the finals of something.. ha
there was some really good tennis in this match. great stuff.

@drumdude46 does he not say " hit your fuckin backhand"? because a few shots earlier, he hit a reletively soft backhand and fed drilled it with his forehand and took charge of the point
