  • If andody can mimmick Larry's style of play; you're amongst the best, if not the best!

  • The post Hendrix moments are my favorite parts. It's funny, because my favorites are Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, and Lennie Tristano. Ordinarily I would rather hear motivic modern jazz. I dug your sound, passion, and expressiveness, though.

  • Very nice, bro. I stumbled on this and it kept my interest. Very nice tone, clean lines. Very impressive.

  • Very Good!!! Can u send Backing track to me? mist-burn@hanmail.net

  • at 2:14 it was like a rightchous personality thing and a yawn at the same time

  • where's larry?

  • You play GREAT. However, (and not to beat it to death) the title of this video is what? "Larry Carlton Style Guitar Solo." Carlton doesn't play like this - and even if you're just trying to lead people to the backing track, it's still outright deceptive to call it something it isn't. False advertising, maybe? Couldn't you call it, "Me, going nuts over what could have been a Carlton-type sound if I'd played Carlton-type lines?" Or, "Carlton Track Works for Straight Rock, Too"... Be fair.

  • u got a tube amp right? i can hear the tube distortion its sweet. i just downgraded from a half stack marshall to a fender champ 600 for recording.

  • great lick from 2:43 to 2:46. nice!

  • Nice chops, awesome tone.

  • Great stuff, somewhere 'tween a Dave Gilmour solo and jazz rock, I like it, you have expression and feeling, that's what i was driving at :-).

  • Very good.

  • mmm did i hear someone say licks i can lick real well

  • super boring why even upload it.crap player crap sound

  • mmm, fuzzy

  • my ex husband sucks at this but u are sooooooooooooooooooo good :-)

  • What were you running for pickups and electronics? Great playing. Nice sound.

  • i am utterly fascinated with all the cool sounds guitars make. so many styles. this is another awesome one. keep rockin dude.

  • Best way to practice IMO too! Nice impro dude!

  • A wee bit out of tune, but who cares :-) Very good!

  • Nothing to do w/ Carlton here .

  • Loved it Great work and tone. Are you a fan of Kazumi Watanabe by any chance?

  • Very nice, I like the tone too.

  • stratocaster the best

  • try to use use dorian b2 on i7 - iv7 complete phrase........... it souds great

  • Nice, how long are you playing?

  • One bit of advice, take a breath, take lots of breaths. You go about 4 straight minutes there with nothing more than an 1/8 note rest. If you want to sound like Larry Carlton , or Robben Ford, guys with tastefful phrasing, the first and sometimes hardest thing to do is to leave space!

Your playing is nice other than that though. Leave some holes and you'll sound way better.

  • Yeah!

  • whats the name of this track and where can i get it

  • Loved that little lick from 3:57 - 4:02 very tasty.

  • Nice Job. Where did get the backing track.

  • awsome keep it up

  • Brings me back . Thanks. The Isley brother's " Midnight sky" sounds something like this.

  • that was really great .nice job

  • nice energy buildup.. its a skill most people lack

  • Eb tuning... nice haha

    good work man

  • Fantastico amigo, es impresionante como tocas. muy bien.

    gracias por tu talento

  • i like the overdiriven light fuzz to it man. Keep it up

  • good job :)

  • YES! killed it. that was dirty as hell.

  • Fave lick is at 1:30 nice job

  • wow wonderful i like it!!!

  • what kind of fuzz pedal is this? sounds goooood!

  • this is your best video IMHO. Youre a great guitarist with killer phrasing. but what the fuck is up with the titles of your other videos?

  • haha what do you mean?

  • killer phrasing ? wtf, did we watch the same video ?

  • ....can anyone out there tell me the title of this track? tks

  • Comment removed

  • you're better then me...

  • very nice once you got going, felt good didn't it? Where can I get the backing track?

  • Link is in the info box

  • Beautiful, very nice mate ! nice squelching strat ! Love that lick at (3.58), simple but cool. Hey does anyone know where i can get this backing track? I wanna play to !....lol

  • Groovy!

  • Some very nice bending ideas, too much fuzz when the gain kicks in though.

  • That's a Fuzzface, it's supposed to sound like that :P

  • EXCELLENT! (stage fright at first..lol)

  • You can't really compare this one to Govan. They are not on the same level. But for this level I thought it was ok. Just need to get a little more inventive and practise those skills and it will be less boring to listen to :) No offense ment!

  • tune the guitar next time.

  • its just his neck bending to hard i guess.

  • @toodelsnoodelstin hahahahaha,you envious?

  • very good,i wish to play like you one day

  • govan solos over this track...and it hurts your head

  • Guthrie Govan completely kills this track which unfortunately leads to comparisons. This guy does some nice things and gives us a very different interpretation, but Guthrie is just inspired.

  • people got issues with "reading". Guthrie was just inspired as you said. His was NEVER to copy Larry carlton. they gave him a job "improvise over a L carlton backing track". Where did they ask him to play LIKE L Carlton ?

  • Killer chops man! sounds great!

i have the exact same guitar...i love it!

  • good job young apprentice

  • there some nice runs in there but i dont think this piece is so emotional that it requires an open mouth for the entire duration of the track :P

  • agreed lol

  • @DeathLoney not agreed actually.. backing tracks are always sterile things to play along to. you cant bounce ideas off a backing track. this is as good as anything else ive sen to a backing track. love the fuzz face

  • that was so damn cool

  • Not bad but too much pentatonic for my taste, but that's just me, try highlighting the chords more with the 3rds 7ths and 9ths and throw in some mixo licks with passing tones. Anyways, not bad.

  • This is more of a Dorian tune :) I'd stay away from mixo licks if I were you.

  • mixo's always good man, gives anything a more bebop feel, besides anywhere you have a dominant chord you can lay down a mixo lick and resolve to whatever you want, but anyways...like I said just my taste I guess, pretty good either way.

  • Why???...Are U kidding....Mixo licks Are Just SWEET...Nice solo by the way....Too Pentatonic For my taste..Tho

  • @jwwetzel i agree mixo licks are more rock n roll licks ... and destroy all the major stuff -.- maybe im wrong between minor or major sorry im working with my ear ^^^'

  • @jwwetzel Try other then pentatonics dude trust my and mixolydian owns !

  • Very Nice!

  • that´s awesome ! , check my poorer jam over this track , greetings.

  • If you want the track, you can pay the people who spent a lot of time making it the 99 cents it costs. I bought it, you should too.

  • you sound great. Where did you go to school. you look farmiliar.

  • that was good!!

  • excelente version eres muy bueno felicidades , oye me puedes pasar el backing que yo tambien estoy interesado en esta piesa o me puedes decir donde la puedo bajar me ayudarias mucho gracias

  • I'm gonna go throw my Strat away now! Nice brother, rock on!-Mark

  • Smokin!

Nice phrasing, tone and pretty freakin soulful.

  • Whatever the critics say....

Great feel and sense of fun..Tasty too..

    I feel it!!

    That's the THING!!!

    Go!!

  • groovy dude

  • try stealing some licks from the marco sfogli one and the guthrie govan one. I know it sounds cheap, but you'll never play exactly the same way as them so just use it as influence and it might help you get moving around the fretboard a bit.

    Really good though.

  • Mate that was fantastic but maybe try to branch out into some more modes and across the neck a bit more. You seemed to just stick with minor pentatonic for a lot of the time, but it had great feeling none the less

  • Excellent!!!!

  • nice playing but tone needs a bit more "punch"

  • what effects/ pedals you using?

  • Nice! Keep going like this, you'll grow betterr :D

  • Good improv my friend but try and keep constantly moving around the fretboard. I noticed that you spent the majority of your time around the 9-12 fret range. That's okay but if you spread out around the fretboard a lot more you tend to find more places to get diverse phrasing. Anyways you did a great job and you don't gotta listen to me thats the beauty of opinion! Great playing man keep practicing!

  • What is the name of this jam track on the website?

  • Very Nice!

  • Nice job man!! that's feeling!!

  • Rock on Kiddo

  • i like your timing, good phrasing

  • very beautiful, great!!!!!5*

  • Very nice

  • whers the larry carlton ?

  • This is the "Larry Carlton Style" backing track. I'm jamming to it. I called it Larry Carlton so people would know what to look for if they wanted to pick up this jam track.

  • nice thats kind of how i practice to hey what year is your strat?

  • Nice.

  • Not seemed Larry Carlton. U´re seemed Santana Woman of Black Magic. Great Santana guitar player. Very good energy...

  • 1:00 - 1:16 superb phrase building! I like your gear btw :)

  • very john mayerish, loved it! nice work dude

  • Very nice, James. Very tasteful playing.

  • LOVELY

  • HEY KID! I just saw you feel what a lifetime can not teach others. Whew! Go Baby Go!

  • Honnestly it's a loot better i thought i'd be. You got something.

  • hey very nice solo. what scales are u using? pentatonic? major? minor?dorian? I've started to jam myself, and I feel like I don't know what to apply when.

  • indian ? egyptian ? busting-ya-ass-scale ? pentanic mainly. Harmonic minor stuff too (goes well with pentatonic). First time i could reallytell what other scaled used, but i let you guess.

  • simplemente fantastico.... felicidades

  • expert is out of tune. Whats my name?

  • Thats what I heard too LMAO!!! Some nice stuff there. Take no notice of the loser expertAtcock.

  • expertATmusic sucks donkey cock.

  • Now this is a breath of fresh air. Too many guitarists on youtube are all flash and no substance. But this has some real soul to it. Keep rocking, dude.

  • Love the tone. I have to buy an arbiter fuzz face now lol...

  • Not bad, quite repetitive at times but quite an enjoyable improvisation overall :)

    well done.

  • You'd make Larry proud. 5 stars, favorited, subscribed. I added you as a friend as well.

Hope to reach your skill level some day ;)

  • hot solo

  • Ah!

and the guitar...pfff my favoutire Stratocaster, very nice but i prefer my Fender Telecaster!

Pd: have a lookon Robben Ford if you don't know him

    bye

  • Very Very Good!

    Excelent!

The best way to improve! and you play Mixolidian! huhu

I hope someday to play like you!

Hom many years do you play the guitar!

    Keep on rocking!

    SalU2!

  • you have sense about feelling, amazing!

  • do ur fingers hurt after practice

  • it doesn't if you warm up properly

  • Bwoods - your finger tips might hurt, but your fingers themselves should never hurt

  • yeah, thats what i was talking about, but i usually just tough it out and keep playing til my finger tips go kinda num and i cant feel them anyway! ~ peace

  • I'm confused, maybe you can help me with this. I've always thought that you had to stay on the scale to play in key. It looks like you go off the scale a lot. I know what notes are on the scale, but how do I know what notes are in key? Am I supposed to be confined to the notes the scale? Great job btw. I subscribed.

  • nevermindchild - well, you just asked me to explain all of music theory :) I recommend you pick up a text on music theory if you really want to understand the relationship

  • PM me, i got something for you.

  • this is great if you did a video that teaches ppl how to play some licks that u did in your videos that would be awesome and it would help me learn alot. like sum santana style licks you did were amazing, but i couldnt pick em up just by listening and watching...

  • njkidd - yea i've been thinking about that!!

  • SOOOOO GOOD.

You never tripped up, it was very smooth and enjoyable

  • glovester - thank you man :)

  • the sound is great. wahts your equipment

  • yanivlevy - it's up there in the video info

  • 555+

  • surasilp :)

  • i'll be honest, best jam on this track other than guthrie's.

  • niiiick - haha how do you remember how many i's?! hahahaha thanks man :) i appreciate it

  • Yeahhh!!!!!

  • FideX - woooooot :)

  • Great job! Go Red Sox!

  • blahman - right on!!

  • Ya man, I'm up in NH, haha. I love your playing, this is how I practice too, it allows me to progress musically and technically at a much faster rate than any other way of practicing. btw, I also play a strat, and I'm looking at a fuzz. And slash5155 is an idiot it is jazz, just a bluesy progression.

  • hahaha blahman - hahaha yea yea for sure, rock on dude!

  • larry is a jazz player not blues bddy

  • slash - haha do i look like larry carlton?

  • no you dont but im saying larry plays jazz not the blues u were playing blues in that video

  • slash - well... there aren't many minor arpeggios in the loosely defined genre that is "blues". Nor are there more than the II-IV-I. If you would define jazz and blues you would find a significant overlap, and Larry is more of a fusion player, and that's more how this video should be classed. It's far from blues.

  • whatever this could go on foreve man im not ragging you that u suck youre great but im saying you worded it wrong thats not jazz jeez

  • haha what is jazz?

  • whatever go get a teacher man if you dont know wat jazz is first of all it might have been jazzbut it sounded and looked more bluesy ok so end it ok

  • slash - haha deal

  • whatever i will

  • haha no i mean "you've got yourself a deal...i agree to your terms"

  • ok thanks your a great player good job

  • slash - thank you :)

  • youre welcome i love you G straight outta Compton yo

  • FCUK DUDE!!! Love the lick around 1:37, that one was very sweet!

The rest of the improvisation is cool also, but I recommend using a lot more of the harmonic minor scale around those VI | V parts. Dig into it, you would do great!

  • netoolv - oh yea man, definitely! like i said, it's how i practice so i keep trying to shove more crap in there and expand my repertoire! glad you dig it man!! rock on!

  • badass, is this in dorian?

  • thecutandthecult - i'm not sureeee how many notes from the dorian mode i hit on this one, mostly i'm stickin to the minor pentatonic with some minor arpeggios

  • i really love your playing in this video. thanks for uploading it. you are one of my favorite youtube guitarists (and i v seen a LOT of them) maybe not VERY technical, but musically you are just great verty entertaining

  • GVH - right on !!! thank you :)

  • Man, as a bass player, I don't really watch too many guitar players on youtube, but MAN, I am feeling this solo! I know you're just jamming out, but I can definately fel the love you have for your instrument and the music. No lame advice here, just keep on playing!

  • Mealismyfriend - well man, i tell you what, that says to me that you're a great bass player!! if you can feel the guitarist, you will be a great addition to any band!! rock on man!

  • it reminded me of an Indian. Don't ask me why LOL

  • CriticalGuitarman - Indian as in Native American or Indian as in from India?

  • good job man. enjoyed it

  • davidsonghello - thanks man! glad ya did

  • You are just plain fun to watch. I'm sitting here mesmerized by your ability. I play as well but I doubt I'll ever get THIS good. Congratulations you have an amazing gift, and it must have taken a lot of hard work. Thanks for the video and the rest of yours (loved Castles Made of Sand).

  • tgunner12 - thanks man!!! that means a lot :) rock on! keep playin and you'll get good enough!!

  • This is great! I like everything but the Red Sox hat!!!

    Great feel, great player!!

  • dostoyevskyfan - hahaha thanks :) the hat was a gift, i'm not all that into baseball :)

  • nice, thats pretty good..

  • lastak :) thank you!

  • hey man you should check out the vid "casey hopkins slow blues" that kid is incredible young but so so talented its amazing. i think hes the kind of young guitar player youd appreciate!

  • sounds great man! rock on
