The post Hendrix moments are my favorite parts. It's funny, because my favorites are Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, and Lennie Tristano. Ordinarily I would rather hear motivic modern jazz. I dug your sound, passion, and expressiveness, though.
You play GREAT. However, (and not to beat it to death) the title of this video is what? "Larry Carlton Style Guitar Solo." Carlton doesn't play like this - and even if you're just trying to lead people to the backing track, it's still outright deceptive to call it something it isn't. False advertising, maybe? Couldn't you call it, "Me, going nuts over what could have been a Carlton-type sound if I'd played Carlton-type lines?" Or, "Carlton Track Works for Straight Rock, Too"... Be fair.
One bit of advice, take a breath, take lots of breaths. You go about 4 straight minutes there with nothing more than an 1/8 note rest. If you want to sound like Larry Carlton , or Robben Ford, guys with tastefful phrasing, the first and sometimes hardest thing to do is to leave space!
Your playing is nice other than that though. Leave some holes and you'll sound way better.
Beautiful, very nice mate ! nice squelching strat ! Love that lick at (3.58), simple but cool. Hey does anyone know where i can get this backing track? I wanna play to !....lol
You can't really compare this one to Govan. They are not on the same level. But for this level I thought it was ok. Just need to get a little more inventive and practise those skills and it will be less boring to listen to :) No offense ment!
Guthrie Govan completely kills this track which unfortunately leads to comparisons. This guy does some nice things and gives us a very different interpretation, but Guthrie is just inspired.
people got issues with "reading". Guthrie was just inspired as you said. His was NEVER to copy Larry carlton. they gave him a job "improvise over a L carlton backing track". Where did they ask him to play LIKE L Carlton ?
@DeathLoney not agreed actually.. backing tracks are always sterile things to play along to. you cant bounce ideas off a backing track. this is as good as anything else ive sen to a backing track. love the fuzz face
Not bad but too much pentatonic for my taste, but that's just me, try highlighting the chords more with the 3rds 7ths and 9ths and throw in some mixo licks with passing tones. Anyways, not bad.
mixo's always good man, gives anything a more bebop feel, besides anywhere you have a dominant chord you can lay down a mixo lick and resolve to whatever you want, but anyways...like I said just my taste I guess, pretty good either way.
@jwwetzel i agree mixo licks are more rock n roll licks ... and destroy all the major stuff -.- maybe im wrong between minor or major sorry im working with my ear ^^^'
excelente version eres muy bueno felicidades , oye me puedes pasar el backing que yo tambien estoy interesado en esta piesa o me puedes decir donde la puedo bajar me ayudarias mucho gracias
try stealing some licks from the marco sfogli one and the guthrie govan one. I know it sounds cheap, but you'll never play exactly the same way as them so just use it as influence and it might help you get moving around the fretboard a bit.
Mate that was fantastic but maybe try to branch out into some more modes and across the neck a bit more. You seemed to just stick with minor pentatonic for a lot of the time, but it had great feeling none the less
Good improv my friend but try and keep constantly moving around the fretboard. I noticed that you spent the majority of your time around the 9-12 fret range. That's okay but if you spread out around the fretboard a lot more you tend to find more places to get diverse phrasing. Anyways you did a great job and you don't gotta listen to me thats the beauty of opinion! Great playing man keep practicing!
This is the "Larry Carlton Style" backing track. I'm jamming to it. I called it Larry Carlton so people would know what to look for if they wanted to pick up this jam track.
hey very nice solo. what scales are u using? pentatonic? major? minor?dorian? I've started to jam myself, and I feel like I don't know what to apply when.
indian ? egyptian ? busting-ya-ass-scale ? pentanic mainly. Harmonic minor stuff too (goes well with pentatonic). First time i could reallytell what other scaled used, but i let you guess.
Now this is a breath of fresh air. Too many guitarists on youtube are all flash and no substance. But this has some real soul to it. Keep rocking, dude.
yeah, thats what i was talking about, but i usually just tough it out and keep playing til my finger tips go kinda num and i cant feel them anyway! ~ peace
I'm confused, maybe you can help me with this. I've always thought that you had to stay on the scale to play in key. It looks like you go off the scale a lot. I know what notes are on the scale, but how do I know what notes are in key? Am I supposed to be confined to the notes the scale? Great job btw. I subscribed.
nevermindchild - well, you just asked me to explain all of music theory :) I recommend you pick up a text on music theory if you really want to understand the relationship
this is great if you did a video that teaches ppl how to play some licks that u did in your videos that would be awesome and it would help me learn alot. like sum santana style licks you did were amazing, but i couldnt pick em up just by listening and watching...
Ya man, I'm up in NH, haha. I love your playing, this is how I practice too, it allows me to progress musically and technically at a much faster rate than any other way of practicing. btw, I also play a strat, and I'm looking at a fuzz. And slash5155 is an idiot it is jazz, just a bluesy progression.
slash - well... there aren't many minor arpeggios in the loosely defined genre that is "blues". Nor are there more than the II-IV-I. If you would define jazz and blues you would find a significant overlap, and Larry is more of a fusion player, and that's more how this video should be classed. It's far from blues.
FCUK DUDE!!! Love the lick around 1:37, that one was very sweet!

thecutandthecult - i'm not sureeee how many notes from the dorian mode i hit on this one, mostly i'm stickin to the minor pentatonic with some minor arpeggios
