What an inarticulate slob Chappell is! A great cricketer, yes, but when he opens his mouth he is squirm-inducing with his repetitious "I mean", his incompleted sentences and his inability to pronounce the word 'particularly'. Go away, Chappelli.
Boycott is an utter cunt. His attitude today (after Bell's "dismissal" at Trent Bridge) makes me want to throw up. Amid all the controversy was Boycott droning on, missing the point, and putting his love of criticising batsmen the world over before common sense and the spirit of the game. He really is a crushing bore and I'm sick of hearing his dull, predicable opinions. I'm English by the way.

Ian Chappell might not be everybody's cup of tea. But I just love him as a broadcaster. Unlike other commentators of the day, he has an opinion on the game of cricket. And he can always use his rich repository of anecdotes to help viewers relate to a match situation. On the same note, I love Boycott as well. He is not a part of any lobby. Doesnt have an agenda and isn't afraid to call a spade a spade. These days commentators wade through cliches and will in general never slag a cricketer off.
Chappell in a bit of an idiot I'm afraid. Boycott averaged 47 playing against Khan, Kapil. Hadllee, Thomson, Lillee, Garner, Marshall, Holding, Croft, Chadrasaker, Bedi, Prasahna, Sobers, Gibbs, Alderman etc. And look back at the scorecards, in those days 300 was a great score for the team at most English grounds.

@brookesyful - just to be clear, I've not met Boycott, but I ain't heard of your Grandad either. However, he sounds like he's got a chip on his shoulder - maybe he got tonked for six a few times before he got Geoff out ;-)
@G00n3r4Life Ian Chappel, a guy that even his own teamates thought of as a complete asshole trys to make himself look good by belittling others. Looks like he has not changed a bit; once an ass always an ass. Sometimes I am embarassed to be an Aussie!
Boycott was an incredibly selfish player. I remember Merv Hughes recalling a game from 1980 in which Australia tried to tempt England by setting them 370 in what turned out to be 82 overs. Boycott was only interested in a personal milestone of a century and England ended 244-3. Hughes-"My view was that he would no sooner help the rest of the team out than fly to the moon." Boycott's selfishness led to England drawing so many they should have won. He simply only cared about himself. Pathetic.
Quick Question...from an indian...Is rahul dravid boring...yes he is...is he essential, yes he is, cos he keeps his wicket intact, and hence allows the sehwags and sachins coming on the other end to play freely, so in my book he is not a selfish player, infact he is a selfless player...now i dont know about boycott cos i never saw him play...but i cant really make out the difference between a two slow scoring players...when one is considered selfless and the other is selfish..pls explain anybody
He may have sent people to sleep, but Boycs stuck around when others around him fell down. This steel determination is what sets Boycott apart from people like Chapell; both class players, but look at the averages.
Agreed, from an indian perspective, rahul dravid, now he can put u to sleep..no doubt...but would u call him a selfish basterd..hell no...the amount of matches that man has saved for india is incredible...everyone plays to the best of thier ability...and so does dravid..if u expect him to play like sehwag..he cant...besides i really dont mind rahul playing the way he does, now i havnt seen boycott play, but IMO when dravid gets going, he is the most beautiful batsmen to watch in world cricket
Boycott was definitely not a strokeless wonder. How can one play for himself in cricket is mystery for me? it's actually the other way round when one plays to the croud and doesn't play for his team. One has to remember that it was always difficlult for an english opener to have a high average coz te nature of the ptich and weather and more often than not Sir Geofrrey was the person to steer his team in heavy waters. Yes he was slow but the situation demanded it.
Geoffrey Boycott may have batted for himself but often he was the only member of the England top order with the technique & mental strength to build a big innings under pressure.
There have been plenty of occasions in recent years when England could have done with someone like him - Ashes 06/07 springs to mind.
Check out most bowlers reaction to getting his wicket. - They knew how valuable he was to the team.
Dont get me wrong he has a point but boycott did the best he could with his ability, Its all well and good to say he should have been playing flashy strokes but he simply wouldnt have been able to do that, so he played to his strengths of determination and concentration and did very well. No, hes not a great of the game but he did the best he could with his ability and that deserves respect imo.
@90carlw chappell saved more matches than boycott ever did, his average was higher because he occupied the crease alot longer, Never saw boycott ever win a test for his country, its all about attitude and where your loyalties lie, chappell was committed to australia, boycott was committed to boycott.
@roadhunter99 It's an Australian colloquialism, where "bastard" isn't necessarily considered offensive ... I think it was a slip of the the tongue from Ian Chappell, and a word that's interpreted uniquely within the Australian vernacular
@BoroSkippy can i tel you something? geoffrey boycott is fucking illiterate he is very rude he should be sent back to kindergarten yeah man....i mean this man talks shit he ain't got nothing at all i mean he just talks shit sht shit the other day this old man talked so much shit about sehwag oh come on sehwag is an amazing player it's just that he has come back after two long hard months..plus he was up against the best english bowlers in form if there are good times there are bad times too.
anyone who calls this game 'stupid and boring' falls into the trap of revealing more about themselves than about what they are attempting to talk about!
batting out on the last day with fading light and keeping concentration withpout losing your wicket , is as hard if not harder than slogging the winning runs. And to call yourself an England fan , then only to lambast an English hero, leaves me debating whether you are a true England cricket fan.
@lunafringe10 anyone who calls this game 'stupid and boring' falls into the trap of revealing more about themselves than about what they are attempting to talk about!
My source was noting other than a recent onscreen showing by commentary teams when he went out to bat - in fairly recent years, so obviously both have gone up slightly since then. I wasnt far off though, and neither 44 SR in tests or 72 in onedayers is going to give bowlers nightmares the night before a match. I think he would have been better off to sacrifice ten runs off his average in return for an additional 10 on his SR, then he may have been a more intimidating prospect for bowlers
Yeah sure Colonel, JK had his very good days with the ball and theres no doubt he was easily the best 5th bowler in 1dayers of his time, and a genuine test match quality strike bowler rather than just a mere handy change bowler. I just think South Africas inability to match Australia (bar last home season) has been partly because their best batsman has been JK no disrespect, any lineup that had him as their 5th or 6th best bat would be an extremely powerful one!
(cont from above) He just doesnt fit into the category that Chappeli talks of who can change the course of a match in a session but rather more like GB who would take too long to score 150+. Didnt matter against teams that were subsequently easy to bowl out twice, but against the top team (full of world class bats) of any era you need a batsmen yourself who can really hurt the opposition bowlers in a short space of time.
(cont from above) Even his oneday SR (not sure what his average is) is only about 68 and hes played in an era where great oneday bats strike at more than 80 runs/100 balls, some even close to or beyond 100.
@Bernie8330, I respectfully disagree with your views about Kallis. His strike rate is 44.43 in Tests and 72.40 in ODIs and not 38 and 68 as you quote (May I know your source?). He has played most of his cricket on SA pitches, which do NOT possess even a single featherbed so to speak of. Lastly, his recent T20 exploits and some other blitzkriegs (50 of 24balls in a test) bear testament to the fact that he curtailed his innate flamboyance for the team's sake.
I've always thought Jacques Kallis is an overrated batsman for the same reason. He might average mid 50's but he only strikes at about 38 runs/100 balls. Ponting, Tendulkar and Lara average just as many but score them at least 50% faster - Pontings strike rate is about 59, Tendulkars about 56 and Laras was over 60. I would say Kallis has been a very good batsman, but not a great one. The fact that he is also a good bowler means he is a great allrounder, but a great batsman, no way. Cheers
i,m not a kallis fan,but he could be rated a VERY good bowler, and yes,a very good batsman-like you said-in other words, overall a cricket great-,better than the others you mentioned, who are also cricket greats,-imagine if lara was a really good bowler too
Chappell vs Boyycott = to MASSSSSIVE characters, i'm English so naturally i will fight boyycotts corner and say that he was a good batter and probably averaged more then chappell?? (jelousy) correct me if i'm wrong on the averages?
@JBrads91 Chappell played 75 tests with a batting average of 42.42. Boycott played 108 tests with an average of 47.72. Chappell can go suck on a turd. The guy is an idiot.
to all you stupid pommy bastards who are sticking up for boycott even Ian botham admitted in one test running out boycott purposefully to give the team a better chance of winning .He admits this in his book.boycott is the most boring batsmen to of played the game and deserves chappellis criticism
You people slagging Ian Chappell for calling Boycott a selfish bastard are quite ill informed.
Boycott made himself unavailable for selection for the English team because Mike Denness was made captain instead of himself, he thought he deserved it, and so he sat out for 30 tests. He was also apparently a loner with very little friends and basically did just play for himself. Again, it's not an aussie slagging other nations, It's just Chappell. He also doesn't rate Steve Waugh at all, we dnno why.
Shane Warne took drugs, He was banned. He is a cheat! CHEAT !. DELETE ALL HIS RECORDS!!! Warne is a chucker , He got away from chucking because he is an Aussie and a racist!
So given Ian's viewpoint on Sir Geoff', are the likes of Lara, Tendulkar, Ponsting, Kallis, Jayasuriya etc selfish as well as they have scored over 10,000 International runs?
@Mirpuria you are missing the whole point of his argument. boycott was considered to be selfish because he never played for the team and was not prepared to change his game according to the need of the hour. while the likes of tendulkar, lara or ponting adapt to the situation. they are prepared to play their strokes when needed and they can play the day out if the team needs it and that was not the case with boycott. his game had only one gear and that was the first.
I couldn't ossibly comment on his style of batting as Sir Geoff' was way before my time. Secondly if his game only contained the 1st gear then he hasn't done bad with 8,000 TEST runs under his belt! What if he played in 5th gear hmm......
but he never played in 5th gear because he was too worried about getting out, you fucking idiot. thats the whole point of this argument. (except for the one between those two retards talking about aus vs england)
during boycott times only test mathes were there i dont understand the logic behind saying selfish batsman wastes balls..... actually the more balls you waste the lesser are the chances for u to lose in test...lol
typical australian bully like mentality... Boycots a numpty but put bums on seats as a player and commentator... He also scored a lot of hundreds... and it might sound cliche, but there's no such thing as a selfish 100's!
really, fairly sure that he has never been knighted and if he does get knighted it would lower the tone for every other cricketer who has and will receive the honour.
Time after time, year after year we have to listen to aussies slag off England and the English. Whenever I meet an aussie, I genuinely try to get along with them but ultimately fail. Now I just don't bother. Im English and I don't like Boycott or aussies.
Well this clip was a bit disappointing. Chppell doesn't humiliate Boycott, he just passes an honest, opinion of him. For it to be a humiliation, Boycott would have to be present.
I'm English, I'm a Yorkshireman and Sir Geoff was a real hero, but Chappell's right - he wasn't a great batsman, because he batted only to accumulate runs for himself, and didn't always play for the team.
He was a fantastic, truly great run maker, but that's all.
Whatever you Poms think of him, let me tell u now, whilst being astute in his analytical analysis of the game when commentating, is so fucking dull and boring..I can also vaguely remember the story about Botham chasing him out of a pub, anyone correctly remember that story??? As a kid loved Botham..Anyway, if England is so great, then why are people leaving like 300,00 a year.. Best thing about Engalnd, is the chips, and next, would be the first flight out of there....
I don't get you Aussies. You spend half your time whinging on about the injustice served on your forefathers sent out to that dried-up, sweltering island, crawling with poisonous snakes and inhabited by spiders that live in your toilet and bite your balls when you take a shit. You seem genuinely pissed off to have been dumped down there, probably with some justification.
Yet you spend the remainder of your time telling us how shit England is.
i am Australian and i have never ever once in my life heard an aussie complain about being sent down to Australia. Are you serious? You just made all of that dribble up, why would anyone be pissed off about being sent to a beautiful warm country. There is no way anyone has ever sat there and complained like that to you. what a fuckin joke..
I didn't make it up. The only reason you replied is because you have a deep-seated dissatisfaction at the fact that you're even there at all, but it's too late, Bruce. Let it go. Make the best of it.
By the way, it's getting quite wintry here now: chilly, frosty mornings, grey skies, and it's pissing down as I sit here typing. Fcuking beautiful: proper, seasonal weather.
To quote Bill Hicks, hot and sunny every day is fine if you're a lizard.
really, I have lived in England for a year and i had a great time. I am actually entitled to a brittish passport on account of my father being born there. I have quite a bit of family there but i would never ever dream of living my life there. Australia is in my opinion and i reckon in the opinion of 95% of the people that live here, the greatest country on earth.
How many of the english population would say that about england, im guessing not many. It was a recurring theme when i was over there that the country was fucked, too many immigrants, too many people living off government handouts, a fucked economy. People were constantly wingeing about everything. So you know what i will make the best of it and as i look outside today and its 33 degrees and a beautiful big pool to go jump into i thank god my grandparents decided to leave the mother country.
hahaha hit a bit of a raw nerve or something. If you look at what i said you will notice that i was talking about the general view of a lot of the english public. Not my own personal views. What i was getting at was the fact that many many brittish people are very unhappy with the way the country is headed. It was not uncommon to hear the term "this country is fucked anyway". Unlike you with your earlier dribble i am not making this up. This is the view of many many brittish people.
"adults"? That's interesting, coming from someone with a user name like yours. I'd put you at 13, 14 or maybe 15?
Yes I did know; the reason I didn't keep my mouth shut is that I'm proud of what my forebears did. Not only did they sort out tinpot dustbowls like yours, but we even had the sense to send all our deadwood out there, knowing that, in a couple of centuries or so, we'd have great sport baiting their descendants on the internet.

Chapell Test Average : 42:42
Boycott Test Average: 47.72

Yes he was slow but the situation demanded it.
lahiridilli 1 year ago

Bernie8330 1 year ago
@Bernie8330 you dont know anything about it so shut up
sam009tiger 1 year ago
Yeah sure Colonel, JK had his very good days with the ball and theres no doubt he was easily the best 5th bowler in 1dayers of his time, and a genuine test match quality strike bowler rather than just a mere handy change bowler. I just think South Africas inability to match Australia (bar last home season) has been partly because their best batsman has been JK no disrespect, any lineup that had him as their 5th or 6th best bat would be an extremely powerful one!
Bernie8330 1 year ago
(cont from above) He just doesnt fit into the category that Chappeli talks of who can change the course of a match in a session but rather more like GB who would take too long to score 150+. Didnt matter against teams that were subsequently easy to bowl out twice, but against the top team (full of world class bats) of any era you need a batsmen yourself who can really hurt the opposition bowlers in a short space of time.
Bernie8330 1 year ago
(cont from above) Even his oneday SR (not sure what his average is) is only about 68 and hes played in an era where great oneday bats strike at more than 80 runs/100 balls, some even close to or beyond 100.
Bernie8330 1 year ago
@Bernie8330, I respectfully disagree with your views about Kallis. His strike rate is 44.43 in Tests and 72.40 in ODIs and not 38 and 68 as you quote (May I know your source?). He has played most of his cricket on SA pitches, which do NOT possess even a single featherbed so to speak of. Lastly, his recent T20 exploits and some other blitzkriegs (50 of 24balls in a test) bear testament to the fact that he curtailed his innate flamboyance for the team's sake.
EricQuagmire 1 year ago
I've always thought Jacques Kallis is an overrated batsman for the same reason. He might average mid 50's but he only strikes at about 38 runs/100 balls. Ponting, Tendulkar and Lara average just as many but score them at least 50% faster - Pontings strike rate is about 59, Tendulkars about 56 and Laras was over 60. I would say Kallis has been a very good batsman, but not a great one. The fact that he is also a good bowler means he is a great allrounder, but a great batsman, no way. Cheers
Bernie8330 1 year ago
i,m not a kallis fan,but he could be rated a VERY good bowler, and yes,a very good batsman-like you said-in other words, overall a cricket great-,better than the others you mentioned, who are also cricket greats,-imagine if lara was a really good bowler too

So given Ian's viewpoint on Sir Geoff', are the likes of Lara, Tendulkar, Ponsting, Kallis, Jayasuriya etc selfish as well as they have scored over 10,000 International runs?
Mirpuria 2 years ago
@Mirpuria you are missing the whole point of his argument. boycott was considered to be selfish because he never played for the team and was not prepared to change his game according to the need of the hour. while the likes of tendulkar, lara or ponting adapt to the situation. they are prepared to play their strokes when needed and they can play the day out if the team needs it and that was not the case with boycott. his game had only one gear and that was the first.
pinkfloyd7002 2 years ago
I couldn't ossibly comment on his style of batting as Sir Geoff' was way before my time. Secondly if his game only contained the 1st gear then he hasn't done bad with 8,000 TEST runs under his belt! What if he played in 5th gear hmm......

niccolsson 2 years ago 2
Well this clip was a bit disappointing. Chppell doesn't humiliate Boycott, he just passes an honest, opinion of him. For it to be a humiliation, Boycott would have to be present.
I'm English, I'm a Yorkshireman and Sir Geoff was a real hero, but Chappell's right - he wasn't a great batsman, because he batted only to accumulate runs for himself, and didn't always play for the team.
He was a fantastic, truly great run maker, but that's all.
