man screw him i like how everyone thought he was going to match up like barry sanders....YEAH RIGHT THIS BOY SUCKS SO FUCKING BAD you couldnt trade him for a bumb on the side of a road
he is the only good player on the whole lions roster. its because he got drafted by such a horrible team is why he isnt having as good as a year as he should be. I dont think he would be like barry sanders, but he is going to be a future star in the NFL.
who knows, if the dolphins are any indication detroit might have a chance next year. but one thing I learned after watching the lions a bit more is that they have a pretty good offense, they had some good starts against teams like the bucs, panthers, and somewhat vikings. Detroit's main problem is their defence and not playing 60 minutes.
wow dude have u seen this man in preseason hes been tearin it up , the dude has great vision and patence. trust me man hell be the rookie of the year this year
awesome video, just hope that this guy can find his own holes (like Barry) because the Lions offensive line absolutely sucks, with no Pro Bowler in years.
yeah but they look a lot better this year and dominque raoila at center was a pro bowl alternate and backus is decent so will see, but i think hes going to be rookie of the year
In the video I recommended in the previous comment: watch at 2:55, 4:05, and 4:57. Wells literally throws defenders with his off arm. In many other highlights throughout the video he runs defenders head on and busts them up. His style is cutback vision with strength and leg turning. Mendenhall and Stewart do this on occasion but rarely Kevin Smith. He is more of an illusive, tenacious runner that shows a lot of heart while running. He isn't a weak runner by any means, but strength isnt his forte
I agree with ottodude. Kevin Smith looks like a good back and he did well in the conference he played in. I am a Lions fan and I am hopeful that he will find his niche in the NFL as well; However, after watching the videos it is evident he does not use power/strength like mendenhall and stewart. If you want to see strength watch the video: Ohio State RB Chris "Beanie" Wells For Heisman 2008. He runs with so much power and utilizes the stiffarm amazingly. That is a power back, not K. smith.
yeah baby Kevin Smith reppin Orlando n UCF no doubt hes rushing for 1000 yd his first season proving to everyone that hes as fast as the other backs in the class. He played for UCF so that hurt him n scouts thought he was a step slow so thats why he dropped so much.
kevin is the best RB comming out the 08 nfl draft he was 6 0r 2,3 yards away of breaking barry sanders rushing yards in collage he hadover 2,500 yards one season one year one man wat more can u aks for hes a beast he will have the best solid carrer out of the draft i cant wate to he takes his first snap for the lions hes amazing.i didnt for get Mc fadden but look wat smith did this season he sould of been draft way higher than he was but fell right in to the lions hands in the third round
Kevin Smith is Frekin sweet The lions are looking really good right now i think they'll make a good playoff run Calvin Roy Smith but dont forget kevin jones he was sweet who did he get traded too?
he didnt get traded they relese him and then he signed a contract with the bears but the lions have a shot a the playoffs this the only changen in there devsion iz the vikings
Iv been a lions fan for a long time now and what i like about smith is that i think he has a lil' sanders in him (yes i know he will never EVER be as good as him) and i think he can bring a running game to the lions offense and that will open up a passing game for calvin, roy, and furry
kevin is the best RB comming out the 08 nfl draft he was 6 0r 2,3 yards away of breaking barry sanders rushing yards in collage he hadover 2,500 yards one season one year one man wat more can u aks for hes a beast he will have the best solid carrer out of the draft i cant wate to he takes his first snap for the lions hes amazing..i didnt for get Mc fadden but look wat smith did this season he sould of been draft way higher than he was but fell right in to the lions hands in the third round..
What about D-Mac, Mendenhall, Stewart or any of those other backs that played in tough divisions and not in a sucky division like Smith played. The record thing is ridiculous, but Sanders probably played half the minutes smith did because they had less games and he did not play in some games past the first half. Smith is a good back, but by no means is he great.
He is definetly not stronger then Mendenhall. You have to be blind. Stewart and Mendenhall are much stronger then Smith. Smith has good vision, but to me his talent does not compare to that of Mendenhall, Stewart, and D-Mac. Kevin Smith needs to prove himself versus good teams. He has simply not done that yet
How did hed do against that mediocre Texas D. All those teams have are good front lines and thats it. Mediocre Linebackers. I cant say it enough Mendenhall and Stewart are beast. Smith is strong but not as strong. I am not saying Smith is bad. He is in the NFL so he has to be good. He is just not yet as good as what your playing him out to be.
Texas was top 20 in country in run D. And he ran wild on them. Kevin Smith is stronger watch him run in the video; "Kevin Smith against UAB (All 41 carries)"
When I say stength I don't mean your strength on the first play of the gam I mean strength in the 4th quarter after you have carried the rock 25 times and you need to put the game away, Kevin Smith has that kind of strength... Mendenhall and Stewart don't.
That not strength. That is endurance. And I hope if you carry the ball 27 times you would get 149 yards. That not running wild. Wild is carring the ball 20 and getting 180+ yards.
150 yards against a run D like Texas with a overmatched OL and a weak passing game is running wild.
And yes it's endurance keeping your strength. Being strong on the first play of the game means nothing, everybody is strong then. It's in the 4th quarter when it matters and you can seperate the men from the boys.
Kevin Smith is a MAN! He only gets better as the game goes on. Boys like Stewart and Mendenhall are great but become average after getting hit 20-30 times.
I bet you could not tell Mendenhall and Stewart thet they are boys to thier face. You would probably piss your pants. I still disagrre he did not run Wild. Ol is not that overmatched. If they have a good blocking strategy it does not really matter. The reason Texas had a high Running D was because in the Big 12 teams pass a lot more than they run now.
A lot of you Slaton and other fans seem to care about 40 times way too much, look at any running back that has had success in the pros, most of them don't have the greatest 40 times, guys that have had tremendous success with sub-par 40 times, Curtis Martin, Tiki Barber, and Brian Westbrook (ran a 4.57 at the 2002 time in college), just to name a few. I have never seen a running back run in a straight line without pads on or the ball in there hands in a game, it is a useless test.
You can see speed on film as long as the comp is there, look at the film of NC STATE and Texas of Smith and smoked them. Look at C. Johnson on film you can tell the dude is fast. Every year there is that combine warrior that didn't do $hit on the field that gets taken high and they are almost always a bust. Guys that run 5's wouldn't outrun anyone, film doesn't lie.
But don't conclude that because the media hypes the 40, that the scouts do too.
Watch a documentary called Two Days in April when you get a chance. It follows the story of four players preparing for the draft (Derek Hagan, Clint Ingram, Dontrelle Moore, and Travis Wilson)
They spent plenty of time going over more then just the 40.
lol I know I do...I'm not gonna sit up here and lie and tell you if I see a Rb on Madden with 99 speed, and the other with 91, you know which one I'm taking...lol
I am not saying speed in general is overrated. Speed kills, but it is football speed that matters, not how fast you run a 40. Also there is are several things important for a RB, speed, agility, vision, patience, strength and acceleration. But speed is important, i will not lie.
Smith is gonna be really good. Hes got an NFL body, good speed, Amazing vision. and durability 1 of the most important things he ran the ball 41 times vs. UAB. I think him and Matt Forte are going to have great NFL careers for these reasons i put up.
I'm sick of hearing "he played against weaker talent" Yeah? He also had the same level of blockers, QB, recievers, etc. It's like some people think he played behind an NFL line, against division aa talent. Doesn't work that way folks. You don't rack up that many yards on accident, and the guys blocking for him were of equal talent of the guys trying to tackle him.
really dude?smith had over 2500 yards, now i like slaton and everything but the dude is not better than smith, and yall can say oh well the competion wasnt good but, idc care what u say 2500 yards is a lot ,i mean u got to admit it, and he looks like he will do weel in the NFL by the way he runs, smiths a beast yo!
i agree with u lions fan, smith almost broke barry sanders record for rushing yards in the nfl and slaton isnt shit, i mean hes good but hes only fast, the lions made a good choice, lions r gonna kick ass this year, imma lions fan tooo. GO LIONS
I Think the best video ever made about UCF and wit Kevin gone they might not be as good but the lions are going to better than last year, mabey even playoffs
from looking at this video, remind me a little of barry sander, hope this guy can help the lions to the playoff, been waiting to long for a playoff game, go lions
yes welcom to the lions we finaly got we wamted i was kinda scared when the lions pass on reshad mendenhall RB but when pick u up at round 3 pick 64 i was happy once agin so good look simth.
How in the world could so many NFL teams pass on this kid? Mark, my words, this kid is going to be GREAT. He may not have that RAW 4.3 Speed. But if you look at the films, he never gets caught from behind. Jerry Rice never had a great 40 time either, and look what he did. Mark my words, this kid is going to make ALLOT of teams sorry they passed.
Um.. perhaps you didn't watch lastyear, but our receivers catch vary well now... We have at lest 4 solid receivers! Our only issues are our defence, which was addressed, the offensive line witch was addressed a little bit, and well, since they got rid of Kevin Jones (who was a great back, just needed a more solid line in front of him) A running Back was needed to.. mark my words... Detroit is PLAYOFF BOUND THIS YEAR!
If he played for a bigger school he would've easily won the Heisman. I went to school at OSU in 1988 and he reminds me of Barry Sanders alot. I hope he does well in the NFL.
I gotta agree with LuckyBob, and everyone else too. Amazing video man, keep it up!
And as far as the 64-12 thing, I like how USF only acknowledges we're rival schools when they got into BCS and beating us. Sore losers I'd say- we got some class, even if the coach made some seriously bad calls!
I'm psyched for next year and next year's highlights when we just tear apart the C-USA and USF.
guarantee you it was a limited playbook. coming off an upset @ ECU and having Tulsa and USM in the following weeks... we had bigger fish to fry than a rivalry that USF refused to acknowledge until they were in a BCS conference
lets hang

ramsfan8588 3 years ago
I agree with most of what you're saying. But I don't think it's worthless.
Think of the test as more of a way to ensure that your not drafting a guy running closer to 5 flat.
If this was all the League went by then you'd see RB's get drafted in order of the 40 time. Several things are gauged when drafting players.
And don't tell me you've never played Madden and didn't use speed as the tiebreaker when choosing between two RB's

I'm not seeing any true speed from this guy.
He can't get outside on college LB's....the pros will tear him up.
Tell my beloved Bears to pass on this one, please!

Get a life, USF Bull crap!! Go UCF Knights!!

guarantee you it was a limited playbook. coming off an upset @ ECU and having Tulsa and USM in the following weeks... we had bigger fish to fry than a rivalry that USF refused to acknowledge until they were in a BCS conference
