I moved to central florida during kevins freshman year and my cousin who was attending UCF at the time told me too pay attention to this kid, i did. then he became my favorite player, college/pros. who knows, if the dolphins are any indication detroit might have a chance next year. but one thing I learned after watching the lions a bit more is that they have a pretty good offense, they had some good starts against teams like the bucs, panthers, and somewhat vikings. Detroit's main problem is their defence and not playing 60 minutes.

In the video I recommended in the previous comment: watch at 2:55, 4:05, and 4:57. Wells literally throws defenders with his off arm. In many other highlights throughout the video he runs defenders head on and busts them up. His style is cutback vision with strength and leg turning. Mendenhall and Stewart do this on occasion but rarely Kevin Smith. He is more of an illusive, tenacious runner that shows a lot of heart while running. He isn't a weak runner by any means, but strength isnt his forte

I agree with ottodude. Kevin Smith looks like a good back and he did well in the conference he played in. I am a Lions fan and I am hopeful that he will find his niche in the NFL as well; However, after watching the videos it is evident he does not use power/strength like mendenhall and stewart. If you want to see strength watch the video: Ohio State RB Chris "Beanie" Wells For Heisman 2008. He runs with so much power and utilizes the stiffarm amazingly. That is a power back, not K. smith.

What about D-Mac, Mendenhall, Stewart or any of those other backs that played in tough divisions and not in a sucky division like Smith played. The record thing is ridiculous, but Sanders probably played half the minutes smith did because they had less games and he did not play in some games past the first half. Smith is a good back, but by no means is he great.

He is definetly not stronger then Mendenhall. You have to be blind. Stewart and Mendenhall are much stronger then Smith. Smith has good vision, but to me his talent does not compare to that of Mendenhall, Stewart, and D-Mac. Kevin Smith needs to prove himself versus good teams. He has simply not done that yet

When I say stength I don't mean your strength on the first play of the gam I mean strength in the 4th quarter after you have carried the rock 25 times and you need to put the game away, Kevin Smith has that kind of strength... Mendenhall and Stewart don't.

And yes it's endurance keeping your strength. Being strong on the first play of the game means nothing, everybody is strong then. It's in the 4th quarter when it matters and you can seperate the men from the boys.

Kevin Smith is a MAN! He only gets better as the game goes on. Boys like Stewart and Mendenhall are great but become average after getting hit 20-30 times.

A lot of you Slaton and other fans seem to care about 40 times way too much, look at any running back that has had success in the pros, most of them don't have the greatest 40 times, guys that have had tremendous success with sub-par 40 times, Curtis Martin, Tiki Barber, and Brian Westbrook (ran a 4.57 at the 2002 time in college), just to name a few. I have never seen a running back run in a straight line without pads on or the ball in there hands in a game, it is a useless test.

Think of the test as more of a way to ensure that your not drafting a guy running closer to 5 flat.

If this was all the League went by then you'd see RB's get drafted in order of the 40 time. Several things are gauged when drafting players.

And don't tell me you've never played Madden and didn't use speed as the tiebreaker when choosing between two RB's

You can see speed on film as long as the comp is there, look at the film of NC STATE and Texas of Smith and smoked them. Look at C. Johnson on film you can tell the dude is fast. Every year there is that combine warrior that didn't do $hit on the field that gets taken high and they are almost always a bust. Guys that run 5's wouldn't outrun anyone, film doesn't lie.

Watch a documentary called Two Days in April when you get a chance. It follows the story of four players preparing for the draft (Derek Hagan, Clint Ingram, Dontrelle Moore, and Travis Wilson)
