@medeabrass it's dissonance written into the chord. I like to think of Crown having stabbed someone, and that dissonance is the knife twisting in the wound.

@MrTubanator no im lead trumpet, but im brass captain for my marching band and when we do Crown's 2011 tuning sequence in arcs its absolutely amazing when the low brass comes in after high brass...especially tubas. I'm one of the few non-cocky screamers that actually appreciate low brass lol

These are all show chords. If you listen to the show you can hear all of them at some point. The funky chord with the tubas happens at the hits at the end of the opener.

Could anyone tell me what the contras were playing at around 2:00. To me it sounds like they're are playing a crunch cord underneath the higher brass, but im not entirely sure. Im a contra player and hope to march crown next year, and im just curious.

@MrBoebigz Th first part focuses on blend, intonation, and timing. The loud ending is just adding one more level of difficulty, more air. The beginning sequence is specifically designed to make the tuning stand out very clearly. The chords at the end are probably something copied out of their show. Practicing the big hits in your show by using them as warmup exercises is a common thing to do.
