hello, can anybody explain to me the concept of amp effects? I mean the randall/marshall/mezaboogie/ cabinet included in a multi-effects? please, I'm having real hard times understanding it. If i have a Laney cabinet, why do i still have to use the Marshall cabinet amp embeded in the multi-effect guitar processor? please, I am so green with those concepts. hope you understand..
The cabinet simulation is used for direct recording. That means that you can have a Cabinet sound without using one. You plug your guitar to your MultiFX, your MultiFX to your PC and that's it.
You can also plug you multiFX to a P.A. system (that's where the singers connect the microphone) using the cabinet simulation.
But it's better to deactivate the simulation if you are using an actual cabinet.
lol dude you got me to buy one of these. i love them. but kinda complicated to understand for me. When i bypass it to amp, the delay doesnt work very well, along with all the effects. I can only here the delayed note after i quit playing or after i kill the note if that makes sense. am i mixing it wrong?
@MCchuckers This has something to do where the delay is placed in the signal chain and evtl with a parameter called ducking in the delay program itself.
If not playing completeley clean a delay wants to live after the preamp/distortion in the signal chain...that way you can choose the delay level better and the notes come out clearer. Ducking means that the delay signal will be ducked until you stop playing or your signal falls under a certain level (threshold)
Did you run that into your effects return or are you using the 4 cable method or just straight into the amp input? And if you are does it suck your tone on your amp quite a bit?
Hi ralf, you're a very good guitar player and your demos are so good. I wanted to ask you if i can get good sounds using the rp500 with the amp simulation on through a solid state amp. What do you think?
I have a question - I see that you've used a flanger in this video. Is it really ideal to be placing the effects before the amplifier? I was under the impression that this wouldn't work well.
Your demos of these pedals are just great. I hope Digitech is paying you well for these :) . One question that the folks at guitar center couldn't answer. I have a Marshall JVM 410 that I love. I have 4 channels so I can get the clean/distorted tones I want. I really want this for the wah/fuzz and all the effects it has that I don't even know about yet. What changes if I connect this to the effects send and return ports and what are the pros and cons of that? Thanks!
@timborocksloud for that Marshall you need to upgarde to the RP1000...that way you can use the effects sitting in front of your amp like wah fuzz etc then you delete the modelling amps and cabs out of the signal path and use the delay and reverbs into your marshalls loop...that is called the four cable method,....that does not work on the RP500....with that unit you need to decide loop or oin front of amp
This was a good start, but I'd sure like to hear more of the less distorted tones of the RP500 driving the input of a tube amp. As a reference, I really like the tones of Jimmy Thackery (bet you never heard of him).
@801Current It is a normal USB cable...you should have one already in your household (printer, harddrives ect). If you dont have it any electronic shop will have it....even supermarkets do
@synthezer The GNX4 is more a guitar workstation which concentrates on giving you anything you need to compose practise and gerally have fun (drums/bass/recording/audio playbacks etc)
The RP series is more an addition of what you already have in terms of real amp etc. It gives you a volume pedal wah stompboxes and FX in general.
Plus it lets you completely delete the modelling section from the signal chain. So you can use the distortion of the amp and leave the core tone of your amp alone
I have the RP355, can it do all this just as well? I want to insert it into my Fender Pro Tube Twin amp send/return, and just use the delay/chorus/flange/phase, and use the amps drive channel with a separate wah pedal in front of the amp.
I have been criticized by tone purists on my posts (see post) for using the Digitech RP355 with my top end tube amp. I was going to look for separate pedals for this reason but have concluded the RP355 should do the job. I ordered an Ernie Ball Wah.
@staple765 Oh my those tone purists....how can anyone decide for you what is right and wrong when it comes to your music and the way you express it or yourself. I mean if the sound you are getting with whatever device it will be ok after all the music is what matters not the unit you play or how you play it.....
For me this is the best way to used the rp 500, if you plug this without the speaker simulation in to a real amp it's sound realy gorgeous especialy the chorus and distortion, the noise gate is realy arch but very usefull in a loud level.
and the whammy inside is just terrific ^^ you can also using as a Looper if you download the 2.0 firmware on digitech website.
@TheDeadNBroken The main differ. is that the 1000 can use your amp as a slave and position FX before and after the preamp section of your amp while the 500 can only sit in front of the pre or in the FX loop of your amp. On the 1000 you have an external stomploop which gives you the chance to incorparate external stompboxes to your system and place them pre or post again. The 6 extra knobs are not empty they are assigned to cetrain function...lower row can be presets while upper row will be FX
i just bought the rp500, i have a question? how to copy presets? on page 12 of the manual,STORING/COPYING/NAMING A preset..i followed the instruction.but failed..yes i can store after tweaking most of the presets specially the SOLODELAY patch, but i cant copy or place it on other banks..pls help..it would be so nice if you could post a video..on how to copy presets or customized patch,
editing would be a breeze...e.g. I want that SOLODELAY patch on USER 31-35..and also..USER preset mode

@bharmin Press store once...the alphanumeric display starts to blink you can now change the name of this preset.....press store another time now the numeric display blinks and you can use the footswitches (up/down to the right) to change the presets number....press store for the third time and you have copied a preset
can the pedal bypass the amps preset effects and just give out the actual effect of the pedal...cause i have a line 6 spider IV 15 amp which has a lot of reverb and silly sounding CLEAN effect !, i wonder if u can bypass that reverbed clean effect of the amp and just hear the pure effect of the pedal ?..please advise....i hope you understood my question
@AirHendrix91 Well it is all about the endrersult and what you want as a tone. from a distance I would say use that signal chain...git-fuzz pedal-RP input-RP left output-Amp FX return.....control the volume by the Master Volume of the RP (knob on the very right under the matrix).....turn up the Fender to a strong overall volume but start with the RP with a minimal volume
@ralfjung Good idea to crank the actual amp and let the Digitech RP500 lower the volume with its minimum setting. I wrote down my current settings on my clean channel on a piece of paper to go back to later so I'll definitely check this out. Thanks for replying to my comment!
After having an RP500 for a while, I found that it not only sucks out some of the guitars tone by plugging through it, but it also adds unnecessary hum/hiss to the mix that without the pedal there isn't any. And not to mention all of the amp and cabinet models are way more than mediocre at best. Some effects are good but a lot of those are also mediocre. I upgraded from an RP90 because it broke and I loved it's versatility but the RP500 almost if not completely turned me off from Digitech.
@stolengoodnight You need to crank a few parameters on the RP to make it match of what normally would come from your amp.....set the preset volume up high and use the overall volume to balance out the volume loss you might experience....I have set my RP so that when I go on bypass it perfectly matches the pure sound of my amp. Also check if the ampmodels are on as there is another volume to be watched
which one is better RP500 or ME-70??? Anyone! I know RP500 got lot more effects and amp modeling. But still Sound Quality wise, build quality wise,, I wanna know, which one is better. Thanks.

hey ralf...quick question - what is the ideal option for setting up this pedal with a tube amp - in front of the amp or in the effcts loop. i understand that if i want to use the models i should probably set it up in the effects loop and if i am just using the effects, in front of the amp will probably suffice. also, i noticed there is a section where it allows you to selects PRE or POST for certain effects...can you explain this a bit to me.
@dkrasney....ideal is a personal thing. For me ideal is when I am able to use the RP direct into a mixer But for live I like to have something behind me on stage so I am not totally dependend on the mixer. Most of the time I use the amp then for a monitor and let the mixer have a stereo signal out of the XLRs. I use the FX loop return on the mixer and omit the preamp. Some FX wants to be in front of an amp pls check out the 1000 video for that application
i changed the settings in the control; panel like the manual said, but on all the programs, it says the output is going to the digitech,. is this right?, is there anyway to hear this out of my computer, or could i use headphones with the RP or do i need monitors for it?. thank you!
@fwd0120 best way to record is to hook up studiomonitors to the RP...that way the RP is the audiointerface and there is no latency. The recording channel should be set up with no output as you can hear your playing thru the Rps output anyway. After recording you simply add an output to the recorded track. This is the same concept with headphones. You shouldnt do complicated things in the guts of your computer as it all changes automatically when the RP is installed.
Hello, Ralf, I just wanted to let you know that I'm really enjoying my Rp500, but am running into a little problem when recording. when I record, I can see that it is recording, but in the programs, which all I have tried (I have guitar rig, amplitube, kristal, cubase le, and audacity) i cannot hear any playback, or hear myself recording them,
Greetings again, Ralf! I was about to purchase this Tomorrow, but was wondering... how do you link the whammy to the expression pedal. thank you very much, sir!!
@fwd0120 Use the cursors to go to the row Modulation and activate that row pushing buttom 1 then turn on buttom 1 until you read Whammy then use buttom 2 to select the Whammy preset....go to buttom 5 and choose pedal value 99 in case you want the classic Whammy effect. Go to row Expression and dial in Exppedal on buttom 1 then the link pedal on buttom 2 then on 3 and 4 minimum value 0 and maximum 99 to select the range of the expression pedal.
@ralfjung Thank you very much, Mr. Ralf!! I will be picking the pedal up from a local music shop in just a few hours, and I'm sure I'll love it!!! Thank You...
@sugfoten in case you use a tube amp and you dont want the signal run thru a modelling section and change the tone...this is why you want to bypass that section.
@ralfjung Roope Latvala is a great guitarist, now he play with Alexi Laiho in Children Of Bodom...:) BTW I have question about Rp-500 in no amp/cabinet modulation mode (distortion from amp), is this audible how RP500 influence to hi gain distortion from amp? Is RP500 deform sound from amp in big degree? Sorry for my bad english:/
Your english is just fine...sorry for not knowing Roope but I guess I have to say thx for the compliment.
If you bypass the RP and bring up the level you will not hear a difference if the Rp in the path or not. If you use a effect then this effect is in the signal path. But if no effect is engaged then the signal does not run thru that effect which is a clear advantage against a pedalboard. The effects are so good you will be amazed and even if they are on the soundquality is great
Cool vid bro! Im wondering on this processor to buy or not, because Im afraid about my distortion from my lovely amp. I would use only FX from rp500 and distortion from my amp (hi gain amp, I play metal) . I Have question about that... Is this audible how RP500 influence to my Hi Gain distortion from amp? It must be hard to change analog signal to digital signal without any change in tone of original amp. Greets!
I got this yesterday, having a lot of fun with it. I was just wondering... this may sound retarded... how do you turn it off? i mean, is unplugging it the only way?
The RP155 has a software which is called X Edit. With that you can hook it up to your computer and use the RP as a audiointerface and remote control the RP. X Edit gives you the platform to graphically control all the parameters. The RP255 and up comes with the X Edit software plus Cubase LE4
sorry to hear that you have so many problems contact Digitech to complain I am sure they have open ears and offer help....I cant do anything about this than saying sorry
I'm thinking of getting the RP500, but I have a guitar with EMG 89's that have the coil tap feature (switched to single coil mode) & I can't hear the coil tap difference with my guitar plugged into the RP350. If I plug the guitar to the amp directly, I can hear it beautiful... Will I be able to hear the coil tap feature through the RP500 or even the RP1000?
The problem with EMGs is that they have up to 18db output...that is 3 times more than passive pickups...this will overload almost any digital amp. The RP500/1000 is taking this better than the 350 but not like a real amp....it helps using less gain on the models than the difference in between the double and single coil will become more obvious
I have a Schecter C-1 with the coil tap function too. I just bought the RP500 last night and got to mess around with it for a couple hours and the coil tap was one of the things I checked. It definitely still works and is completely noticable.
I had a shitty little RP50 I used for a while and it still worked on that thing.
Nonetheless, god luck. This pedal is well worth the money.
Hi Ralf, I met you on Musikmesse 2009. Thank you for all your awesome demos, the great videos here on youtube and all your valuable annotations. I still have one question concerning the RP500: I want to use the RP500 as a preamp: Guitar RP500 Poweramp In (FX-Loop-Return of my Fender HRD). For that I use the amp-sim but there is no need to activate the cab-sim. Am I right? Is it possible to use the RP500 in that way? Thanx for answering.
you are absolutely right....if you use a real amp with a speaker dont turn on the cab simu on the back of the unit. This will sound way fresher and open!
thats bad luck and I hope you get help from that store,.,,,,if not please write Digitech directly or write the national distributor. Let me rest assure you that this is not common
Sure...it has a Whammy pedal, than a normal pitch shifter which shifts your signal up amd down an octave in semi steps last but not least it has an intelligent pitch shifter which gives you the chance to play diatonic correct intervalls....check out the Harmony Man if this whole topic is new for you
if you set the unit up to 99 on the Master and 50 on the ampsection you will hear no difference. Since the signal is still running thru a processor (which provides the effects) when you bypass the amp and speaker section you will hear a slight difference in tone but I am very critical and I say slight!...it is not annoying.
It takes other pedals just like anything else. I would consider to upgrade to the RP1000 if I was you though. The RP1000 has a solution exactly for this application
If I'll use it only for reverb on some settings - will it have any side-effects on my tone compared to other digital reverb pedals?
I've been a guitar-two simple pedals-tube amp guy for most of my life but the more I play live now the more I find myself in a need for more effects and a tuner... a multi seems like what I need but those things still... ehmmm... scare me. :-0
Yes you can but you must be aware that most of the FX are pre distortion effects (stompboxes like distortion or tube screamers or Compressors or Whammy)...so the position of your loop is critical in case you want to use those effects in the common way
It has a lot of distortion stompboxes...I think it has more than 20 different pedals...all the classics plus some weirdos....on top of this you have the ampmodels which are numerous too. There is a distortion pretty much for any taste plus the EQ of course.....
I use a cheap Canon, but feed the videosignal direct into my Apple which improves the quality of sound and vidio
Sure you can. This is basically the concept of the RP500. Make sure you switch off the amp/speaker simu using the buttom on the right....then use the pedalboard mode and there you go!
does the rp500 have a whammy effect, cos im buying one in a few days,if it has, please can you show me a riff on it,cos that will decide whethere to buy it or not
Hiya, i was wondering im gonna buy this pedal, but im just curious when playin whit alot of gain/volym. Is there a built in noise suppressor in the RP 500? Or should i buy the BOSS NS 2 Also?
There is a noise gate built-in which makes the pedal quiet. If your amp is not producing noise (in case the rP is in front of the amp) you should be fine
Hey just wondering what multi effects pedal you recommend, the Boss ME-70 or the DigiTech RP-500? I am leaning towards the Digitech at the moment but could you please tell me if any of the modulation effects sound too digital? thanks in advance!!
I think it is all a matter of personal taste. I mean I will not tell you go for this or that I can only talk about things I know from the one or the other unit. Both units are digital and they dont sound digital like units sounded approx 5 to 7 years ago. The RP has a variety of models Ibanez Boss Roland TC EH etc so you can pick whatever style of modulation you like. The maybe an advantage of the RP over the ME70 but the ME 70 has some other neat features as well...so it is up to your liking!
I dont know exactly the EQ of the GT10 but the RP500 does feature a semi parametric 3 way EQ per ampmodell or preset. This gives you a lot of freedom to tweak in the tones you like - I hope this helps
ok I only have 300 bucks or 400 bucks....Should i get this thing or a pedalboard with Boss ds-1 distorsion, DEltaLab digital delay, EH KNockout Equalizer, Boss Chorus ensemble, Dyna compressor???I NEED HELP PLEASE!! I'm play things like Pink FLoyd an Led zeppelin....need help...
please dont be mad at me if I wont give you recommendation what to buy. I mean I am not you you play differently you hear differently your application is different and in the end of the day it is your money that will be spend. Please go out and check the units in a music store...go to a music store which borrows pedals to you so you can check them out at home n peace or in the rehearsal room with the band.
The DS-1 and the Dyna are built-in the RP as well as plenty of Choruses...EQ too.
Thanks bro....But for now I'll wait until summer....Im going to USA on summer....Here in the place where I live....the music stores dont let you try things....very stupid isnt it?
Well I cant really say it is stupid since I dont know the situation of the store but it surely doesnt help you in your situation. May I ask you where you from? Country and City...
Yeah....I'm living in Colombia in Bogota.....Here the stores do not have good products to offer....the only good thing they have is like....Ibanez....
In Bogota....hm Digitechs distributor is located at Bogota they should have a showroom where you can check the equipment in peace. On top of that there is the distributor of Washburn....he has a store and carrys Digitech as well....I know him personally....maybe you should go there tell him that we talked....cant guarentee that this helps though
Okay, I'm going to look for that stores and try this multi-effects. For now thanks a lot man...And if I have any troubles with that or something I'll bother you again =D. jaja..thaanks again!
I looked at the vids of the RP500 but I can't say I've gotten more wiser out of it since you haven't used the amp modeling with a clean tube amp. Nevertheless, I still have a question. The effect buttons, can they be assigned to 4 different distortions etc. Since I see Compressor, Distortion, Chorus, Delay, Reverb and was wondering if those are fixed to those types of effects?
Oh, by the way; I don't want to replace my own setup since I'm using some very specific pedals etc. So, how does this integrate with other effects? I don't think I have to worry about that too much though since I also use a true-bypass looper.
Hi, thats tough to say since pedals are sometimes pretty temperental as you surely know. You will only know for sure if you check it out. I used a couple of analog pedals before and a Lexicon studio reverb after and everything worked just fine no complaints - but again pls check it out yourself. I had some funny reactions with other gear with a Fuzz Face for example....you know what I mean
the effect switches are assigend to a certain effect block. So the distortion will always be a distortion out of the list of 18 types included in the RP...same with the other effects. Maybe you should look at the RP1000 which gives you an extra stompbox and amploop....or maybe change to a switcher system with real relais and buffering such as that polish stuff or maybe the Lehle things
Ah, that's a shame regarding the effects, not that it matters all that much since I would only be using this unit as a distortion unit in itself, that's why I was hoping to find a demonstration of the amp modeling in front of a clean tube amp. And I already have a switcher system [Carl Martin Octa-Switch], so the RP500 would be in one of these loops. I would love to see a short demo of a Mesa Boogie or Marshall sound in front of a completely clean tube amp. Could you do this?
Hi, my question is that if I'm using the RP500 in stomp box mode, is it possible to bank up and down to get different stomp box configurations? I wouldn't want to have to reach down to take it off stomp box mode in order to change banks, then turn it back on again. I have a Peavey Valve King 50 Watt combo and I like the tones straight from that amp, so I'm hoping I can set up different stomp box config's and switch them on the fly with my feet. If not, will the RP 1000 do it? Thanks.
That would be a stupid thing to do live wouldnt it? Yes you can change presets in stompboxmode using the up and down ftsw to the right. You can also decide per preset where you want the mod stompbox before or after you distortion and you can have different stompboxes in each presets anyway. The RP1000 does the same thing but a little more because of the loops
Well I am pretty loyal to the guys of "The Valve"...I love their amps but they dfont have a strong distribution that covers the whole world. With the RP500 it is important if you want it to be in front of the amp that the amp is decent. Minimum 25W a 12"inch speaker better more than one and evtl a clean and a distorted channel. I like the Deluxes of Fender but not knowing your budget and style it is hard to recommend something - sorry
Maybe try pushing the groundlift switch in the back of the unit...for most groundrelated problems this is the cure. Hissing can come from various sources also from bad or not so good cables....mybe sitting too close to the amp and having single coil pickups....you need to eliminate the different variables
I think Digitech have messed up with this awesome unit. Many others at the same price have a looper built in, I'm sure this one doesn't or does it Ralph???
I think telling Digitech has messed up just because 1 wish has not been fullfilled is kind of negative. It is a great unit for such a little price and it does a lot...in this pricerange there is no other pedal which does give you the same features and quality...which other unit can bypass the modelling section just by pushing one buttom? Well and then look at the RP1000 there is a looper in there....use your common sense and maybe you get what I am trying to tell you here....smile
I didn't mean to be negative, sorry, I know you are the official Digitech demo man and will defend them but I just think that Digitech would've have really took total conrtol of the market with a looper on this unit but then I am looking at it from my perspective and I am not a gigging musician it is only my home hobby.
Cheers for the excellent videos.
One more question, does the unit hold the current patch when you switch banks only switching when you press the patch button?
Hi Phil...yes it keeps the patch until you select a new one...there is a time slot in which you have to do this...but as long as you are going thru banks it keeps the "old" patch
hmmm when you bypass the actually amp preamp does that mean that the only sound coming out of your speakers is the sound of the speakers-amp poweramp- digitech - guitar.
In other words. Would this product still work at the same quality if i wanted to run this after my guitar and right before a pa system
yes you are right...when you dont use the real amps preamp and replace it with your modelling section of the RP unit you hear these models.....or you still dont use the models and just run a stompbox or an external preamp into the poweramp of your real amp. You can route a signal out to the PA with speakersimulation at all time (this will be a 4x12 speaker modell) thru the XLR. This sounds better if you use the RP as standalone full modeller unit and use the ampmodell speakers.
I'm finding some all over ebay for $239.00, instead of the 299.00 that's on musicians friend. I just ordered mine a few hours ago off of ebay. This thing rocks!
Thanks for the demo. I have an RP500 and am still getting to know it. Any suggestions for for dealing with the wild volume changes when using stomp box mode? Also any idea how to just click on the acoustic guitar effect by it's self?
I get some cool sounds of this but never twice:) and it's like so many many clicks to change I don't see how this could ever be used live. Maybe i am wrong? please anybody enlighten me :)
Every stompbox a. effect you use when in Live mode has a significant effect on the volume. Best is to arrange a couple of presets and then set the volume so you dont see this differences through the volumes inside the effect rows.
Just assign the acoustic effect to a preset and then this is your acoustic sound. All the presets you can copy inside the user bank that means you can copy 55 to 1 etc. Arrange the presets to be close to each other so you dont have to scroll thru the whole 100 presets.
Nice Demo. Just got my RP500 about 2 weeks ago and I love it. I went from the GNX3000 to the RP500. The GNX3000 is a great unit as well, but was a little too much. Never took advantage of all the recording options with the mic input, etc.,
I am very happy with the RP500 and sounds great in front of my Fender Princeton Chorus. The effects of the RP500 are IMO, even better than the amp models.

@delacruzneili
Basically, you can avoid using an amp.

Compliments again for your demos and playing ;)

I only use it in pedal board mode. Do you know how I would use fuzz and a tube screamer at the same time? Or flanger and chorus?

It's cool that you took the time to post this! Nice to get a product review from someone who loves music...rather than just trying to make a sale!

Thanks!
timborocksloud 1 year ago
@timborocksloud for that Marshall you need to upgarde to the RP1000...that way you can use the effects sitting in front of your amp like wah fuzz etc then you delete the modelling amps and cabs out of the signal path and use the delay and reverbs into your marshalls loop...that is called the four cable method,....that does not work on the RP500....with that unit you need to decide loop or oin front of amp
ralfjung 11 months ago
This was a good start, but I'd sure like to hear more of the less distorted tones of the RP500 driving the input of a tube amp. As a reference, I really like the tones of Jimmy Thackery (bet you never heard of him).

Hi
great Vids
My question is. How does the rp500/1000 compare to the GNX4. I already have? will these (either rp500 or 1000) do something I do get from the GNX4?
Thanks
synthezer 1 year ago
@synthezer The GNX4 is more a guitar workstation which concentrates on giving you anything you need to compose practise and gerally have fun (drums/bass/recording/audio playbacks etc)
The RP series is more an addition of what you already have in terms of real amp etc. It gives you a volume pedal wah stompboxes and FX in general.
Plus it lets you completely delete the modelling section from the signal chain. So you can use the distortion of the amp and leave the core tone of your amp alone
ralfjung 1 year ago
I have the RP355, can it do all this just as well? I want to insert it into my Fender Pro Tube Twin amp send/return, and just use the delay/chorus/flange/phase, and use the amps drive channel with a separate wah pedal in front of the amp.
I have been criticized by tone purists on my posts (see post) for using the Digitech RP355 with my top end tube amp. I was going to look for separate pedals for this reason but have concluded the RP355 should do the job. I ordered an Ernie Ball Wah.
staple765 1 year ago
@staple765 Oh my those tone purists....how can anyone decide for you what is right and wrong when it comes to your music and the way you express it or yourself. I mean if the sound you are getting with whatever device it will be ok after all the music is what matters not the unit you play or how you play it.....
ralfjung 1 year ago
You need to be a scientest these days to be a musician. Everything is electrified. When we have no more electricity we have no more music. Oh well.
Neeklam 1 year ago
Does it have a mod/delay?
flyhi94 1 year ago
@flyhi94 Yes it does.....plus you can have modulation and delay seperately if you want that....but there is a mod delay in the delay row
ralfjung 1 year ago
For me this is the best way to used the rp 500, if you plug this without the speaker simulation in to a real amp it's sound realy gorgeous especialy the chorus and distortion, the noise gate is realy arch but very usefull in a loud level.
and the whammy inside is just terrific ^^ you can also using as a Looper if you download the 2.0 firmware on digitech website.
Meteotrance 1 year ago
What makes the digitech rp500 different from the rp1000? I seen that the rp1000 has 6 more empty knobs..?
TheDeadNBroken 1 year ago
@TheDeadNBroken The main differ. is that the 1000 can use your amp as a slave and position FX before and after the preamp section of your amp while the 500 can only sit in front of the pre or in the FX loop of your amp. On the 1000 you have an external stomploop which gives you the chance to incorparate external stompboxes to your system and place them pre or post again. The 6 extra knobs are not empty they are assigned to cetrain function...lower row can be presets while upper row will be FX

can the pedal bypass the amps preset effects and just give out the actual effect of the pedal...cause i have a line 6 spider IV 15 amp which has a lot of reverb and silly sounding CLEAN effect !, i wonder if u can bypass that reverbed clean effect of the amp and just hear the pure effect of the pedal ?..please advise....i hope you understood my question

Ralf, should I connect my RP500 through an effects loop on the back of my Fender RocPro1000 amp and connect my guitar straight in through the front?
I have a fuzz pedal as well. Should I simply connect the fuzz pedal to the RP500 and then the RP500 to the back of the amp where the effects loop is
OR should I connect my guitar to the fuzz factory pedal and the fuzz factory to the front of the amp?
I ask this because it seems like you know how a thing or two about guitar pedal looping :D.
AirHendrix91 1 year ago
@AirHendrix91 Well it is all about the endrersult and what you want as a tone. from a distance I would say use that signal chain...git-fuzz pedal-RP input-RP left output-Amp FX return.....control the volume by the Master Volume of the RP (knob on the very right under the matrix).....turn up the Fender to a strong overall volume but start with the RP with a minimal volume
ralfjung 1 year ago
@ralfjung Good idea to crank the actual amp and let the Digitech RP500 lower the volume with its minimum setting. I wrote down my current settings on my clean channel on a piece of paper to go back to later so I'll definitely check this out. Thanks for replying to my comment!
AirHendrix91 1 year ago
After having an RP500 for a while, I found that it not only sucks out some of the guitars tone by plugging through it, but it also adds unnecessary hum/hiss to the mix that without the pedal there isn't any. And not to mention all of the amp and cabinet models are way more than mediocre at best. Some effects are good but a lot of those are also mediocre. I upgraded from an RP90 because it broke and I loved it's versatility but the RP500 almost if not completely turned me off from Digitech.
stolengoodnight 1 year ago
@stolengoodnight You need to crank a few parameters on the RP to make it match of what normally would come from your amp.....set the preset volume up high and use the overall volume to balance out the volume loss you might experience....I have set my RP so that when I go on bypass it perfectly matches the pure sound of my amp. Also check if the ampmodels are on as there is another volume to be watched

hey ralf...quick question - what is the ideal option for setting up this pedal with a tube amp - in front of the amp or in the effcts loop. i understand that if i want to use the models i should probably set it up in the effects loop and if i am just using the effects, in front of the amp will probably suffice. also, i noticed there is a section where it allows you to selects PRE or POST for certain effects...can you explain this a bit to me.
dkrasney 1 year ago
@dkrasney....ideal is a personal thing. For me ideal is when I am able to use the RP direct into a mixer But for live I like to have something behind me on stage so I am not totally dependend on the mixer. Most of the time I use the amp then for a monitor and let the mixer have a stereo signal out of the XLRs. I use the FX loop return on the mixer and omit the preamp. Some FX wants to be in front of an amp pls check out the 1000 video for that application

continued from below...
i changed the settings in the control; panel like the manual said, but on all the programs, it says the output is going to the digitech,. is this right?, is there anyway to hear this out of my computer, or could i use headphones with the RP or do i need monitors for it?. thank you!
fwd0120 1 year ago
@fwd0120 best way to record is to hook up studiomonitors to the RP...that way the RP is the audiointerface and there is no latency. The recording channel should be set up with no output as you can hear your playing thru the Rps output anyway. After recording you simply add an output to the recorded track. This is the same concept with headphones. You shouldnt do complicated things in the guts of your computer as it all changes automatically when the RP is installed.
ralfjung 1 year ago
@ralfjung Thank you very much, I will try that!

I was about to purchase this Tomorrow, but was wondering... how do you link the whammy to the expression pedal. thank you very much, sir!!
fwd0120 1 year ago
@fwd0120 Use the cursors to go to the row Modulation and activate that row pushing buttom 1 then turn on buttom 1 until you read Whammy then use buttom 2 to select the Whammy preset....go to buttom 5 and choose pedal value 99 in case you want the classic Whammy effect. Go to row Expression and dial in Exppedal on buttom 1 then the link pedal on buttom 2 then on 3 and 4 minimum value 0 and maximum 99 to select the range of the expression pedal.

why do you have to bypass the amp and cab section?
btw nice demo.

MortusThrash 2 years ago
Your english is just fine...sorry for not knowing Roope but I guess I have to say thx for the compliment.
If you bypass the RP and bring up the level you will not hear a difference if the Rp in the path or not. If you use a effect then this effect is in the signal path. But if no effect is engaged then the signal does not run thru that effect which is a clear advantage against a pedalboard. The effects are so good you will be amazed and even if they are on the soundquality is great

The RP155 has a software which is called X Edit. With that you can hook it up to your computer and use the RP as a audiointerface and remote control the RP. X Edit gives you the platform to graphically control all the parameters. The RP255 and up comes with the X Edit software plus Cubase LE4

Will I be able to hear the coil tap feature through the RP500 or even the RP1000?
wickedexp 2 years ago
The problem with EMGs is that they have up to 18db output...that is 3 times more than passive pickups...this will overload almost any digital amp. The RP500/1000 is taking this better than the 350 but not like a real amp....it helps using less gain on the models than the difference in between the double and single coil will become more obvious
ralfjung 2 years ago

Hi,
Love your playing...
I'm set on buying an RP-500. I'm going to use it with my small tube amp for effects. I'm really curious about a few things:
1. how good is the bypass on this unit? I know it's not true bypass but how much does it affect your tone when I step on the bypass switch?
2. how well would it take effects that run into it. I love my overdrive+boost pedal and don't want to give it up.
Any help would be appreciated.
jazzerlbn 2 years ago
Hi
if you set the unit up to 99 on the Master and 50 on the ampsection you will hear no difference.
The RP1000 has a solution exactly for this application
ralfjung 2 years ago
Thank you. One more question if I may:
If I'll use it only for reverb on some settings - will it have any side-effects on my tone compared to other digital reverb pedals?
I've been a guitar-two simple pedals-tube amp guy for most of my life but the more I play live now the more I find myself in a need for more effects and a tuner... a multi seems like what I need but those things still... ehmmm... scare me. :-0
jazzerlbn 2 years ago
Can you loop this into an FX loop.
brotherbleu 2 years ago
Yes you can but you must be aware that most of the FX are pre distortion effects (stompboxes like distortion or tube screamers or Compressors or Whammy)...so the position of your loop is critical in case you want to use those effects in the common way
ralfjung 2 years ago
does this pedal have good distortion? i am more of a metal player and i was wondering if this would satisfy my needs.
btw..... what camera do u use for recording? it looks great.
tenderizerpr0duction 2 years ago
It has a lot of distortion stompboxes...I think it has more than 20 different pedals...all the classics plus some weirdos....on top of this you have the ampmodels which are numerous too. There is a distortion pretty much for any taste plus the EQ of course.....
I use a cheap Canon, but feed the videosignal direct into my Apple which improves the quality of sound and vidio

Question,
Can you use your amp distortion and just add Chorus, delay or noise gate from Rp500?
or you always must use a Rp 500 distortion and add different effects?
megadarkstar82 2 years ago
Sure you can. This is basically the concept of the RP500. Make sure you switch off the amp/speaker simu using the buttom on the right....then use the pedalboard mode and there you go!

PurmoIndian 2 years ago
There is a noise gate built-in which makes the pedal quiet. If your amp is not producing noise (in case the rP is in front of the amp) you should be fine

The 500's built in noise gate works fine for me. I don't think you'll need both.

Hey just wondering what multi effects pedal you recommend, the Boss ME-70 or the DigiTech RP-500? I am leaning towards the Digitech at the moment but could you please tell me if any of the modulation effects sound too digital? thanks in advance!!
TheMoloney 2 years ago
I think it is all a matter of personal taste. I mean I will not tell you go for this or that I can only talk about things I know from the one or the other unit. Both units are digital and they dont sound digital like units sounded approx 5 to 7 years ago. The RP has a variety of models Ibanez Boss Roland TC EH etc so you can pick whatever style of modulation you like. The maybe an advantage of the RP over the ME70 but the ME 70 has some other neat features as well...so it is up to your liking!

please dont be mad at me if I wont give you recommendation what to buy. I mean I am not you you play differently you hear differently your application is different and in the end of the day it is your money that will be spend. Please go out and check the units in a music store...go to a music store which borrows pedals to you so you can check them out at home n peace or in the rehearsal room with the band.
The DS-1 and the Dyna are built-in the RP as well as plenty of Choruses...EQ too.

leead22 2 years ago
Hey Ralph,
I looked at the vids of the RP500 but I can't say I've gotten more wiser out of it since you haven't used the amp modeling with a clean tube amp. Nevertheless, I still have a question. The effect buttons, can they be assigned to 4 different distortions etc. Since I see Compressor, Distortion, Chorus, Delay, Reverb and was wondering if those are fixed to those types of effects?
DemoColorScheme 2 years ago
Oh, by the way; I don't want to replace my own setup since I'm using some very specific pedals etc. So, how does this integrate with other effects? I don't think I have to worry about that too much though since I also use a true-bypass looper.
DemoColorScheme 2 years ago
Hi, thats tough to say since pedals are sometimes pretty temperental as you surely know. You will only know for sure if you check it out. I used a couple of analog pedals before and a Lexicon studio reverb after and everything worked just fine no complaints - but again pls check it out yourself. I had some funny reactions with other gear with a Fuzz Face for example....you know what I mean
ralfjung 2 years ago
Hi
the effect switches are assigend to a certain effect block. So the distortion will always be a distortion out of the list of 18 types included in the RP...same with the other effects. Maybe you should look at the RP1000 which gives you an extra stompbox and amploop....or maybe change to a switcher system with real relais and buffering such as that polish stuff or maybe the Lehle things
ralfjung 2 years ago
Ah, that's a shame regarding the effects, not that it matters all that much since I would only be using this unit as a distortion unit in itself, that's why I was hoping to find a demonstration of the amp modeling in front of a clean tube amp. And I already have a switcher system [Carl Martin Octa-Switch], so the RP500 would be in one of these loops. I would love to see a short demo of a Mesa Boogie or Marshall sound in front of a completely clean tube amp. Could you do this?
DemoColorScheme 2 years ago
I can't believe it's not butter.

Thanks.
zoomworkz 2 years ago
That would be a stupid thing to do live wouldnt it? Yes you can change presets in stompboxmode using the up and down ftsw to the right. You can also decide per preset where you want the mod stompbox before or after you distortion and you can have different stompboxes in each presets anyway. The RP1000 does the same thing but a little more because of the loops
ralfjung 2 years ago
Hey Ralph, i don't have a tube amp, but i have a rp500 coming in the mail. I'm kind of short on money could you recommend a good tube amp?
MJman 2 years ago
Well I am pretty loyal to the guys of "The Valve"...I love their amps but they dfont have a strong distribution that covers the whole world. With the RP500 it is important if you want it to be in front of the amp that the amp is decent. Minimum 25W a 12"inch speaker better more than one and evtl a clean and a distorted channel. I like the Deluxes of Fender but not knowing your budget and style it is hard to recommend something - sorry
ralfjung 2 years ago
can anyone tell me why a get a hissing sound when used in front of my marshall avt amp and im using the rp500 with the amps off?
shreder31 2 years ago
Maybe try pushing the groundlift switch in the back of the unit...for most groundrelated problems this is the cure. Hissing can come from various sources also from bad or not so good cables....mybe sitting too close to the amp and having single coil pickups....you need to eliminate the different variables
ralfjung 2 years ago
i tried the switch and it made no difference. i'll try the leads next somethings gotta work! :(
shreder31 2 years ago
I think Digitech have messed up with this awesome unit. Many others at the same price have a looper built in, I'm sure this one doesn't or does it Ralph???
PhilDY6 2 years ago
I think telling Digitech has messed up just because 1 wish has not been fullfilled is kind of negative. It is a great unit for such a little price and it does a lot...in this pricerange there is no other pedal which does give you the same features and quality...which other unit can bypass the modelling section just by pushing one buttom? Well and then look at the RP1000 there is a looper in there....use your common sense and maybe you get what I am trying to tell you here....smile
ralfjung 2 years ago
Ralf,
I didn't mean to be negative, sorry, I know you are the official Digitech demo man and will defend them but I just think that Digitech would've have really took total conrtol of the market with a looper on this unit but then I am looking at it from my perspective and I am not a gigging musician it is only my home hobby.
Cheers for the excellent videos.
One more question, does the unit hold the current patch when you switch banks only switching when you press the patch button?
Phil
PhilDY6 2 years ago
Hi Phil...yes it keeps the patch until you select a new one...there is a time slot in which you have to do this...but as long as you are going thru banks it keeps the "old" patch
Cheers

yes you are right...when you dont use the real amps preamp and replace it with your modelling section of the RP unit you hear these models.....or you still dont use the models and just run a stompbox or an external preamp into the poweramp of your real amp.

Thank you

The effects of the RP500 are IMO, even better than the amp models.

what kind of amp do you reccomend? What type do you have in your "Digitech RP500 Preset Demo" video where you go through diffferent presets? Thanks.
