  • haha i knew itd sound way worse than the recording

  • @tonyhawksacriminal search around the web. you can hear them a capella they do sound good. this is a bad recording

  • Love this song. Uk follower here god bless ya

  • They Sound like Seattle looks.......? That's crazy...I don't get tham at all. No particural musical inventivness. Nonsense lyrics. Good for singing rounds. Folksy. Are they better live?

  • amazing...uplifting...beautiful....great band

  • One of my son's friends introduced to me to their music. White Winter Hymnal is a guaranteed mood-lifter. Love the harmonics!

  • speed version

  • i love this band

  • Wow I've never hear a band sound so good in the Drunken Unicorn. I guess its all that reverb fight back those tin can acoustics.

  • the music is amazing, but i think the lyrics are great too.

  • Oh my god this band are awesome

  • Best song ever.

  • all your band are belong to us.

  • their harmonies are amazing... so perfect, just as good as the album too.

  • Beautiful. It's as if The Byrds had written the soundtrack for The Wicker Man.

  • You are so right.

Exactly what I thought on hearing this.

I completely agree with you and could not have put it any better than you.

  • Omigod!!! You summed up what I've been trying to figure out how to say for days... "they are like old-world english isles psychedlic beach boys folk???" No... The Wicker Man reference is exactly what I was looking for. :)

  • Mucis to live with, happy and shine

  • The sound is great. Props!

  • OMG ! The Fleet Foxes were at the Drunken Unicorn in Atlanta ?? This place is a hole in the wall, but they do land some amazing artists just starting out. That is way too funny. They have come a long way in a year.

  • Meh. I HATE Metallica... but you've got to respect them for what they are and they are some of the best performers ever.

I think it's fair to say that Flee Foxes aren't about their lyrics (like Conor Oberst or something) as much as they're about their sound.

Lyrics are great and it's not that Fleet Foxes have terrible lyrics... but they're not the best. It's cool... if it was just about lyrics then you might as well just write a novel. Music is more.

And Fleet Foxes makes AMAZING music.

  • yes, lyrics DO mean something and DO make sense, just gotta listen deeper.

  • The lyrics were made to not make sense, but to be harmonious. Thats the point, obvioulsy if you listen to any of their songs they have wonderful harmony.

  • SEATTLE forever

  • seatle for ever

  • seatle for ever

  • Spell it right! Then give Seattle props! Besides that fact, Seattle forever!!

  • quit these futile debates and listen.....listen........no stop talking...listen.

  • Now that it's January, it's just nice to have a song that's about winter, as opposed to Christmas.

  • Manic-who cares what it is about? If it is just about the music, than why didn't the band use vocalese instead of lyrics? It matters to the people who MADE the music...and it matters to some the people who listen to it. Don't like the disscussion? Don't scroll down.

  • the lyrics DO matter. but it DOESNT matter what they mean to fleet foxes. it matters what it means to YOU. most lyrics are written so you can get your own personal feelings and expressions from them and so they can relate to everyone. so whatever the song means to YOU is what the song means. bands dont do that on accident

  • personally i think everyone involved in this macho pissing contest should just STFU. what does your enjoyment of this song or the meaning you find it in have to do with anyone else? just enjoy it as u want to, and leave everyone else to do the same. thanks.

  • Don't care what it's about -- it's hypnotic and purty. Reminds me of "In the Pines" (Nirvana covered) -- lovely dark and sinister. Kind of like KSlater states above -- this could easily recount some middle school nightmare.

  • it's called "where did you sleep last night?"

  • it's known under both titles, depending.

  • brian wilson

  • watched ur show in Dublin,Ireland...great stuff...keep it up

  • omg when did they come to the drunken unicorn????

  • I haven't read any of your comments, but I understood the song to be talking about a winters day (in NYC or some bustling city) following the chic city crowd with their red scarves (looks sharp with a black coat). As they (Mike and him) are walking Mike slips on the ice and cuts his head turning the snow red like the scarves. In this bleak scene the singer thinks about better times, thus the strawberry and summertime references

  • no thats a good guess but thats not it, an interview with fleet foxes they say the lyrics dont mean anything about that or about anything really but the song is mroe about the vocals

  • WTF, it talks about the civil war man, read the lyrics properly.

  • ahh no lyrics dont have much to do with anything actcually, maybe u should watch some Fleet Foxes interviews and then maybe youll know that this song is more about the vocal melody more then anything. no its not about the civil war

  • its clearly about catcher in the rye

  • Wow, well I'll add my own 2 cents to this discussion. In the November 13th edition of Rolling stone magazine with ACDC on the cover there's an article/interview with Fleet Foxes and it says that White Winter Hymnal was written by Pecknold about his friends in middle school ditching him. Check out the article in Rolling Stone.

  • Well, I've also read other interviews with them that said the song was more about the harmonies and lyrically meaningless. That being said, Pecknold also commented about how the song is also about the loss of innocence. He said something like - basically I spent from 1st grade to high school with the same bunch of kids. It was weird how quickly they changed, suddenly they were drug dealers. I hated it. How did our friendship become less important than wearing a backwards baseball cap?

  • I thought the song was about stop motion figurines trying to control time?

  • Great music, come to Amsterdam for a show!

    We're waiting...

  • I have been trying to determine the meaning behind these lyrics. To me, it's really quite dark. It reminds me of one of those old upbeat nursery rhymes/hymns that actually has a dark meaning like jack & jill. The word throats is used, not necks..and turn the white snow red sounds like blood. If anyone knows the meaning behind the lyrics let me know. I can not believe this is accidental lyric writing, would be interested to know.

  • They remind me of the band from the 70's "America".

Horse with no name, Tin Man. These guys are a breath of fresh air. I dig this song.

  • I saw America less than 6 months ago at an outdoor festival, and let me just say (this is an accurate stat as well) these guys are 1,356 times better than America.

  • smn9ac,

Why would say better? If it weren't for bands like America paving the way, maybe we wouldn't have bands like Fleet Foxes. Thank God we do!

    Peace Out!

  • I'm seeing them next week, and I'm seriously considering freezing myself down until then 'cause I'm just dying from this waiting.

  • I love these guys. I can't wait to see them this September at the Treasure Island music festival.

  • wonderful! one of these awesome sides of America!

  • wow! swabe to da max. naaalala ko tulog CSNY.

  • rare!

  • So you're saying "I Am The Walrus" and "Magic Bus" have meaning?

A good pop song is a good pop song is a good pop song, and Fleet Foxes, my friend, write great pop songs. They're not technical wizards and they're not shattering any boundaries but crafting great pop songs is an art in itself. The Beatles already proved that.

  • yes "i am the walrus has meaning" john lennon was a smart man. he didn't just sring words together into pointless bullshit verses. open your eyes.

  • Well then buddy please tell me what this "meaning is" and explain to me how you can prove that it is the meaning John lennon intended. Think before you type

  • Actually that was the meaning.

He wanted to create the most baffling song ever, in an attempt to have people like you embarrassingly try to decipher it.

  • So unexpected! So nice and warm! Here we go; some new folks with a real gift and love for music, harmony, and performing too. I'm so happy I found out about this band; I've been smiling all weekend. I'll tell eveybody. All the best!

  • What a catchy melody! Very rare these days!

  • very rare indeeeeeed

  • this song is great

  • this is absolutely wonderful.

  • If you love this song, check out the Youtube "Fleet Foxes Sing Songs". They silence everyone at the Croc. with the power of this piece. Beautiful.

  • Fantastic, when are these guys coming to the UK? We are waiting patiently......Lets see them on Later with Jools Holland on BBC2.

  • Yeaaah! Thanks for putting this up!
