@nostalgiacreep Have you harrd Debussy's own performance o a piano roll? Also, Gieseking's tempo is about the same, though not as forward moving. I wonder if a Richter performance exists...who do you like in this piece?
That piece is so casual and beautiful, I've never heard a piece of music before that feels so laid back. I need to listen to more Debussy! It's totally different from other music.
@inavla That doesn't really mean anything... but it's incredibly beautiful that you said that at the same time. Art doesn't mean anything either. Art for art's sake.
I'm curious what edition everyone is consulting regarding the tempo of this piece. Unless you're referencing editor's markings, I was unaware that Debussy specified a specific tempo for his Preludes. This prelude is marked "doux et soutenu" (soft and sustained), but says nothing about SLOW. The steady quarter notes provide a natural sostenuto without having to purposefully drag the tempo. It is a dance, after all.
The tempo is slightly faster, but still, it is impressive that he keeps a steady tempo, which is one of the concerns Debussy had with this piece, and which also makes it more difficult. He wanted to feel the dance, and keep the shading in right and left hands like a man and woman responding to each other in dance.

thanks but we don't want to wait 30 seconds for the music to start. That doesn't take a genius.

At 3:13 I have noted how he tries to make a vibrato on the keyboard... wonderful!!!

When he hits that loud Bb chord at the end, I could cry. Totally realised Debussy's vision.

This 70's fashion statement makes him resemble Salvador Dali in sportswear.

LOL he really reminds me of Salvador Dali. Ithink Micheangeli is the grandmaster of Impressionismus, Dali the king of Surrealistic art

Debussy's music should be listened with your mind not only with your ears.

Is it a dance? Or is it an impression of dancers perhaps of painted on Delphic pottery or temple markings.
amill61 4 years ago 3
uhhh well there are tempo markings that says lento on my score... so doesn't that mean slow?
archangelz1106 4 years ago

cclus 5 years ago
isn't this too fast? ...i think the piece is marked to be played at 60bpm. I prefer it slower.
prdeltoid 5 years ago
Actually it is marked 44bpm, or Lent et grave. Personally, I feel it is a little fast also, but it is a wonderful interpretation nevertheless.
commk7 5 years ago
This tempo is very similar to Debussy's tempo on his piano roll of the piece.
